Eastern Chronicle, New Glasgow, N.S., 26 Nov 1942: WALTER SYLVESTER An estimable citizen, a most kindly neighbour and a Christian gentleman has passed to his reward in the death of Mr. Walter Sylvester, Abercrombie Road, New Glasgow. He was 82 years of age and his years had been largely spent in New Glasgow. He was engaged for a long period at clerical work with the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Co. at Trenton, and particularly came under his care the Employees' Relief Association, a mutual organization that gave help to those workers in the plant who were sick or in distress. For the past ten years or more Mr. Sylvester has not enjoyed anything like good health, but daily when the weather was fit he went for a short distance for a walk and became quite a familiar figure, with his cheery greetings. He was an elder in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and a long time member of Norton Lodge of Odd Fellows, of which fraternity he was a Past Grand and when his health permitted one of its most faithful members. Mr. Sylvester was not one who ever intruded himself. He was of an exceedingly quiet nature but behind that quietness there was a sterling character and he could ever be found on the side of the better life and he was resolute in his willingness to render what help he could for the better things. As a consequence his friends were legion and his death arouses the most kindly recollections in the memories of all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, one son, John, of the mechanical staff of the Highway Department, Halifax, and two daughters, Miss Susan Sylvester, Deaconess in the Presbyterian Church Mission in Nova Scotia, and Miss Margaret Sylvester, M.A., of the New Glasgow High School staff. The eldest son of the family, George, resigned from his position as principal in a Halifax public school, and enlisted in the Canadian Army in the Great War. He became a Lieutenant and died on the field of battle. He is buried in France. The interment of our aged friend and neighbour will take place at Abercrombie cemetery on Friday afternoon. Thus passes into the shadows, leaving a golden memory, one who served his day and generation well and faithfully. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx SYDNEY E.
