Born in Aberkenfig, Wales, a son of Thomas and Lillian (Ponting) Davies, he was educated in schools in Tondu, Wales, and at Cardiff Radio College. While employed as a wireless operator by the Marconi Company, he sailed the world for many years on mercantile marine and passenger ships, arriving in Canada in 1930 where he served alternately on the "Lady" boats to the West Indies and on cruise ships to the Caribbean and South America. He joined the Federal Department of Transport in 1939, holding various postings over the years, including Sable Island, Nottingham Island, Pennfield, Halifax, Sydney and Moncton. He was the last surviving member of a group of skilled DOT radio operators who were commended by the British Admiralty during the Second World War for secretly tracking the German warship, the "Bismarck", from a station at Hartlen Point outside Dartmouth. He retired in 1970 as Atlantic Regional Supervisor of Operations in the Telecommunications and Electronic Branch of the Federal Department of Transport and in 1967 received the Centennial Medal for "valuable service to the nation". He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Wilhelmina "Mimi", formerly of Paris, France, and Saint John, N.B.; son, Dr. Thomas Davies (and Bonnie), Farmville, Va.; daughter, Dr. Gwendolyn Davies, English Department, Acadia University, Wolfville; sister-in-law, Helen Dempsey, Kentville; and her family, Daniel, Ian; sister, Winifred Davies, Irchester, England. He was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers in the United Kingdom. Cremation has taken place. Funeral 2 p.m. today, July 12, in St. John's Anglican Church, Wolfville, Canon S.J.P. Davies officiating. Family burial in Willowbank Cemetery, Wolfville. No flowers. Memorial donations to the Victorian Order of Nurses (Kings County), 15 Chipman Dr., RR # 1, Kentville, NS B4N 3V7.
