The Eastern Chronicle, New Glasgow, N.S., 15 Dec 1942: HUGH MUIR Our good friend Hugh Muir, of Westville, who was an associate of the Editor for some years on the Pictou County Power Board is in the limelight of friendly publicity. We would join in kindest congratulation to Mr. Muir on his splendid record. We publish the story from the Halifax Herald. It is doubtful if there is a miner who has the record of Hugh Muir who at the age of 83 years is still working in the pit for the Intercolonial Coal Company at the Acadia Mines, Westville. Mr. Muir was born in Stellarton at Bunker Hill in 1859. When seven years of age he moved to Westville and has been a resident of that town since. When a boy at the age of 13 he started to work in the Drummond Mines and for 70 years he has been a steady workman. For 60 years he has dug coal for the Intercolonial Coal Company there, for a number of years he was an examiner and up to the first of the year he has worked as a shipman, and last week he worked a full week. Mr. Muir was married twice, his first wife passed away 35 years ago and they had seven children. He served four years as mayor of Westville, and has been a councillor for a period of 40 years and is at present one of Westville's Councillors.One election for Councillors there were five candidates and that year Mr. Muir received the largest vote of his 40 years. Last year he went in as Councillor by acclamation. He always took a keen interest in sports and contributed towards any clean sport which the town of Westville was noted for through the years. Mr. Muir with his second wife, have a nice home on Church Street and both are highly respected citizens. Mr. Muir was a member of the I.O.O.F. for over 50 years and received a 50-year jewel. He never had any serious accident and worked under five different managers. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx HUGH F. DOHERTY The death of Hugh Francis Doherty occured on Friday morning in Sussex, N.B.. He was in his seventy-sixth year and was the youngest son of the late John and Margaret Madden Doherty. Although in poor health for the last ten or twelve years, his death came as a shock to his relatives and friends. The deceased is survived by his second wife, thirteen children, two brothers and ten grandchildren. Four brothers and two sisters predeceased him. Two daughters by his first marriage are: Framces(Mrs. Gordon Fulton), of Minto, N.B.; and Nora, of New Glasgow. Of the other children, two sons are in the R.C.A.F.; Nathaniel who had his wings before war broke out, and William; another son Joseph is in the army; the remaining two, Frank and Walter, are at home; five daughters, Margaret, Katherine, Agnes, Bernadine and Helen are married, while Pauline a registered nurse is at home. One brother Patrick, resides in Sydney; the other, Nathaniel, the well known former owner of the Ora Hotel in Stellarton, with whom the deceased's daughter Nora has made her home since she was a little girl, lives in New Glasgow. Engaged in agriculture all his life on the old family land, Mr. Doherty's farm on R.R. No.1, Sussex, was one of the largest in the province, where he was well and favorably known. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx MISS MARGARET ELIZABETH GRANT There passed away on Saturday, the last member of a well known family of Marshdale, Pictou Co., when Miss Margaret Elizabeth Grant died at her home on Brookside Ave. She was born in 1850 and was beloved and esteemed by all who knew her. Her funeral service will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock in Westminster Church and will be conducted by Rev. Hugh Monro, D.D.
