Freshwater came from the name of the stream that once ran through that area where the Public Gardens are now and then down past Victoria Park... where the road is now. From there it ran down hill and emptied into the harbour- Freshwater Stream. Once the industries and many people came along, it was no longer freshwater but became very badly... and sadly polluted.
