    1. Re: [NS-L] Hurshman Family
    2. Bob Hegerich
    3. Hi Leanne: I doubt that you are going to find anything on who Copernicus HURSHMAN's biological father was, as he doesn't seem to know. At marriage, he gives his parents as his grandfather and his aunt Catherine, who [from the 1871 Census] apparently raised him, and at death, the informant (who is his son?) put Unknown for his parents. As to his name being Copernistl, I think that's simply a census-taker's error in the 1871 Census. At her marriage to Jeremiah Young in 1883, Georgina gives her parents as George and Helen HURSHMAN and, in Copernicus' birth record, the "Father, Mother, or Other informant" is one George P. HURSHMAN. From that, it seems clear (at least to me, although I cannot prove it) that her father is George Philip HURSHMAN. In the 1871 Census of French Village, George Philip's age places his birth abt. 1810. Since I'm not a HURSHMAN researcher per se, I can't really say much more than that. However, I can say that George Philip seems to be Anglican, and his marriage is in neither the Halifax Anglican registers nor in Terry Punch's Religious Marriages in Halifax, at least that I can can find. So I will guess that he may have been married at St. Paul's Anglican, French Village. And since I don't have access to the marriage register for the Parish of St. Margaret's, someone else will have to address that possibility. One final note--I would be willing to wager as high as two cents that George Philip's parents were Philip HURSHMAN and Jane THOM, who married 23 Jun 1810 [Parish Register, SPAH]. -----Bob H----- On 3/29/2012 11:57 AM, Leanne Lewis wrote: > > > Hi, > > > > > > Let me first send my apologies if you’re receiving this email multiple times, I was having difficulty with my emails. > > > > > > I’m looking for help with my family roots. 3. Hi, Let me first send my apologies if you’re receiving this email multiple times, I was having difficulty with my emails. I’m looking for help with my family roots. My ancestor and my gg grandfather is Copernius Volney Hursman, AKA Purney Hurshman, and sometimes referred to in censuses as Copernistl, b 19 Feb 1874, in St. Margaret’s Bay, illegitimate son of Geogina Hurshman. This is where my research comes to a stop. I don’t know where else to find records on Georgina or Purney’s biological father. In 1902 Purney married his first wife and my ancestor, Bessie Pass. They had a child, my grandfather, Charles Philip Hurshman (b 1904). My family is from McNabs Island, NS and we still own land there. A statutory declaration indicates that Purney got land on McNabs Island as a resulting of him "squatting" on the lands - squattors rights. At age 40 he served in WWI as an engine driver. His place of residence at the time was Bishop Street, Halifax. His attestation papers list his religion as Church of England. Purney died on 17 Dec 1949 in Halifax, NS. His birth cert. refers to “Geo P. Hurshman” as “father, mother or other informant” so Geo P. is Georgina’s father or other informant but I don’t know which. In the 1881 census, he is listed as living with George Hurshman, age 70, Catherine, age 25 who was a servant. This leaves me confused. Where is his biological mother, Georgina? Why is he not living with her at his young age of 7? If anyone has a database for his obituary, can you please let me know. Any other help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. 1. [NS-L] (no subject) or (Hankinson UEL research)
    2. Hi Tanya: I have a little experience with Loyalist and Mayflower research in Nova Scotia. Here is a link for the Hankinson connection, you may find your place in it and then you would only need to prove back to that connection for Loyalist. UELAC only wants minimal papers - just one positive link between each generation from yourself to the ancestor. Mayflower is slightly different. They require B-M-D proof from you to the Mayflower pilgrim. You should submit their initial generation form online back as best you know it. ~$10.00. They will check their records and tell you if you are on the right path and offer proofs, if others if available, that will show how far your line has been "proved", then you provide the documentation needed back to that. They were very helpful to me and their genealogist worked to guide my research when I got stuck. RE: Hankinsons and Sabeans. Reuben Hankinson has been proved and accepted by UEL (his name is on their online list) Remember that Annapolis County initially included Digby County. http://www.hankinsononline.com/thirdgen.php http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nsdigby/obituaries/surh.htm#HANKINSON http://www.encyclopedia-titanica org/titanic-biography/thomas-william-hankinson.html Carol Harding

    1. [NS-L] Which Susanna MOSER married which Philip MOSER--my view of that
    2. Bob Hegerich
    3. Hi All: I recently came across an entry in Walter Mission's book "Dear Jessica" stating (p. 46) that Philip MOSER 1808, s/o Leonard and Mary (CURRIE) MOSER, m.2) Susanna MOSER, d/o Johann Heinrich [Henry] and Mary (HENNEBERRY) MOSER, in 1845. The purpose of this note is to suggest that this appears to be wrong on two counts. First, I suspect that the Philip MOSER who m. in 1845 is a different Philip MOSER; and second, I suspect that the Susannah MOSER who marries in 1845 is not the d/o Henry and Mary (HENNEBERY) MOSER. So the purpose of this note is to put forth the reasons why and invite comments. To begin with, in the 1861 and 1871 Censuses of NS, we have only two Philip MOSER's in Halifax County--"Philip H." and "Philip L.". The novice genealogist would probably jump to the conclusion that the H. stood for Henry, and the L . for Leonard, but we won't go there (yet). From the 1871 and 1881 Censuses, we see that Philip H. is consistently shown as b. 1815, and his wife Susannah as b. 1824 (or thereabouts), and that they have a daughter named Emily b. 1848. Now in the 1871 Census, we see that Philip L. MOSER, b. 1808 (or thereabouts) is living with Daniel Philip MOSER and appears to be a widower. Living right next door is Leonard and wife Mary (CURRIE) MOSER. So now, let's track marriages. We know that a Philip MOSER marries a Mary Ann HOYE, who d. 1867 (which most likely eliminates the possibility that he marries Susannah MOSER in 1845), and we also know that Philip MOSER, widower, s/o Leonard MOSER, m. Sophia SCOTT, widow, in 1868. I think that this is the same Philip. He cannot be Philip H., who is married to a Susannah in both 1871 and 1881, and therefore he must be Philip L., who we now know is son of Leonard. So that novice genealogist who leaped to the premature conclusion that L. stood for Leonard would now appear to be vindicated. So, I believe that the father of Daniel Philip MOSER is Philip L. Moser 1808, s/o Leonard, who m. Mary Ann HOYE and then Sophia SCOTT. Second, this means that Philip H., who appears to be s/o Henry, is the Philip who marries a Susannah MOSER in 1845 since, as noted above, daughter Emily is b. 1848. This Susannah appears to be Susannah 1823, d/o Leonard, both because of her age and because, if Philip H. is s/o Henry, he almost surely did not marry Susannah 1819, who is his sister. There is also a question as to whether the Philip who d. 1890 is Philip L., s/o Leonard. As to this, his LWT states "I bequeath daughter Mary Ann Partridge of Halifax to be executrix all real and personal estate to go to daughter Mary Ann Partridge w/o Charles Partridge now of Halifax providing she shall deed to her brother and my son the Eastern portion of the land on which the the house is built. Said land situated at Moose Head" [transcribed by Joe Whitby]. According to her records, which are consistent, Mary (MOSER) PARTRIDGE is b. 2 Aug 1843, which is before the marriage of Philip H. and Susannah in 1845. So either he has a first wife, or she belongs to Philip L. Also, the deed tells us that she has a brother, and in the 1861 Census Philip H. has a family of three, whom we know to be himself, wife Susannah and daughter Emily. Also, we know of only one male child of Either Philip L. and Philip H., i.e. Daniel Philip. He cannot be the Daniel in the 1861 Census, who has a family of 6, and he does not marry until Dec 1862, at which time he is a bachelor. Since there is no room for him in the family of Philip H., he must belong to Philip L.; so until another male child of one of the Philip's is discovered, he and Mary would appear to be the children of Philip L. And finally, Philip H. seems to be associated with Moser River, while Philip L. seems to be associated with Moose Head. So what about Susannah 1819, who apparently didn't marry either Philip L. or Philip H.? I think that she is the Susannah/Susan, spinster, who appears in the family of sister Elizabeth (MOSER) FRASER in 1871 and brother Matthias MOSER in 1881. -----Bob H-----

    3. Hi Bill, Is the Daniel Starratt who d. 1875 in Annapolis (NS Vital Stats online) your Daniel? This would seem to be consistent with the probate record of 8 Dec 1877: to Elias STARRATT for the estate of Daniel STARRATT. Estate Folio S108 (1877): left widow Eleanor STARRATT and 11 children. 1. Re: [NS-L] Schnare/Snair puzzle
    2. Hi Jared, Yes that does seem to be the issue. I *think* I found Mary's death record, along with James, but again the person reported the information was not a family member. Really odd that James did not report Mary's death (or one of the children), and when he died it looks like a neighbor reported the death. So no information on him (Oddly some on Mary and you are correct that she was apparently a Brigley). It does say that he was buried at East River Point, but I have a feeling he may have buried on his land. I have never found a listing for a James Schnare/Snair for St. Georges Anglican which is where I think he would have been buried. Does anyone have access to those church records that could take a look for me?? There is no stone, but sometimes that means nothing. He could have buried in an unmarked. As well, has anyone run across a history of any of these reference map points? Schnare Cove Nova Scotia Bay Lunenburg Schnare Point Nova Scotia Cape --- Schnares Beach Nova Scotia Beach Halifax Schnares Cove Nova Scotia Bay Lunenburg Schnares Crossing Nova Scotia Unincorporated area Lunenburg Schnares Hill Thanks again!
