The Commonwealth Vital Records are now available up until 1915. I suspect that this is a compilation from the SSDI and other sources, definitely a secondary source. The 1916 - 1920 Records AIR have been released to the Archives but are being indexed ans will not be available until the indexing is complete. An announcement was distributed to various lists about 6 months ago. I thought I filed it but cannot find it. bob gillis

Boston appears to be the first incorporated city, 1822, but its VRs start in the early 1600s. The Commonwealth started keeping VRs in 1850. These state copies were hand copied on the same forms from the town records and sent to Boston. So there are discrepancies. Many of the town VRs to the end of the year 1849 were complied in the late 1900s and published over the next 25 or so years. These compilation included all records, civil, church, court and private that could be found a that time. These compilations were published in Tan Covers and are commonly known as the Tan Books. Many of Tan Books can be found indexed and with images on http://ma-vitalrecords.org/ Many town records, including VRs, land records, marriage publishments to the early 1900s were filmed and issued on fiche by Jay Holbrook of Archives Publishing. He recently sold the entire collection to Ancestry and they are slowly being put on line. AIR many of the Tan Books were filmed and put on CDs by Search and Research Publishing. As far as I can tell this company has closed. I hope to find them as have a CD and it will not work on WIN 7 without a new .dll file or whatever. bob gillis > > -----Bob H----- > > On 3/30/2012 10:10 AM, Roger Weir wrote: >> Hi all, >> >> I was looking over some of the names on my rootsweb page and >> noticed that they have added Massachusettes Vital Town Collection, >> 1620 to 1988. Hi Roger: Yes, it is new to Ancestry, but not to natives of Massachusetts. Back in the 1600's, Massachusetts towns and (later) cities [there are no unincorporated areas in MA] started collecting and recording vital statistics. In 1800's (and in some cases before) the State of MA started collecting and recording them as well, so in many instances there are two sets of records, not necessarily identical. :-) -----Bob H----- On 3/30/2012 10:10 AM, Roger Weir wrote: > Hi all, > > I was looking over some of the names on my rootsweb page and noticed that they have added Massachusettes Vital Town Collection, 1620 to 1988. Mostly marriages I have seen so far. Births have been linked as well....but 1915 is the cutoff. I read somewhere that ancestry had the new records online as well from 1916 to 1920...but I have yet to find anything. Familysearch has the images online but as of yet they don´t have a searchable database. You have to view the records one by one and pray that you find a match. Hi George: I don't believe you are going to find a more complete list than the Halifax Catholic Cemetery Commission's on-line database of cemetery records (Holy Cross, Mt. Olivet, and Gate of Heaven) at http://www.ccchalifax.com/interm/search.cfm . PS. They don't show a Duncan Joseph McLEAN, at least that I could find. -----Bob H----- On 3/30/2012 12:14 AM, George F.
