Hi John: Thanks much. I cannot figure out what I did with it. I just had a fonecon with her son (he never spoke with her as all five of her children were taken away from her at an early age). He says that her name on his birth certificate is MORASH. So I suspect that her parents weren't married. -----Bob H----- On 4/9/2012 11:00 PM, John Cordes wrote: Hi Bob, I have this short one: JACK, Shirley Irene -- 66, Halifax, passed away April 24, 2010, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Hi Allen, According to Jack Sanford, /John Sanford Genealogy/, Roscoe Payzant SANFORD was a s/o Victor Payzant SANFORD and Margaret Catherine HINES of Canning, NS. Victor Payzant SANFORD was a s/o Joshua Arthur SANFORD and Emma E. Burgess. Apparently they lived in Newport township. I could find no SANFORD/PAYZANT marriages in Jack Sanford's book, so, as far as I can tell, the PAYZANT name in the SANFORD family was not familial. Of course the name may have come from the maternal side. I do not know Emma Burgess's parents names. Trust this is helpful.... John John D. Today's post on my Roots to the Past blog concerns Elley (nee Cann) and Richard Moxon's three children -- George, Harry and Ettie -- who died in 1888. Richard and Elley died in the Halifax Explosion. The grave of these children has not been located though there is a headstone for them. If anyone knows where this grave is located, please, let me know so I can add it to the post. I'm not related to this family. It's a story of interest that hopefully will help those who are related find information. For anyone trying to figure out which Enumeration District to look in to find your ancestor that may be in the United States census in 1940, use this site: http://stevemorse.org/census/unified.html Once you have the correct number, you only have to browse the images in that set, which usually not that many. Each district was assigned to one enumerator. In cities and towns, they were given 2 weeks to complete the census, in rural areas a month was given. So, that is why each district is fairly small. Dear List: As usual, this list has provided me with much valuable family information, sources and leads for future research. Thank you. For those who may be following along to supplement their trees, it appears I found Daniel Odell (also Odel, O'Dell, and now Odle) in Dover, then Dutchess County, New York, settled within what is/was known as the Beekman Patent: "Daniel Odell was born ca. 1733 and was taxed in Beekman from Feb. 1757 through 1778 and joined the Dover Baptist Church in 1762. He was another Loyalist from Dover. Local records on him are scarce but he went to Annapolis, Nova Scotia after the war and claimed the loss of a 160 acre farm and house in Dutchess County, 90 miles from NYC. He also claimed losses for a cider mill, carpenter's tools, blacksmith's toos, cattle etc., with a total value of [pound symbol] 1,810. His claim was rejected but he took part in the Botsford Grant. He died at Smith's Cove, Digby, Nova Scotia, 6 Dec. 1816." The Settlers of the Beekman Patent , Vol.1, p. 591. None of the replies to my posting have mentioned this so the material above is new for the list. I also see where Daniel was no longer in his NY home on 19 Aug. 1779. The Settlers of the Beekman Patent , Vol.1, p. 151 (... they could take their rent wheat to John Keatings, 'formerly Daniel Odle's.'). And then there's: Augustine Odell, whom I find mentioned at/in the Beekman Patent as early as 16 Aug. 1749 ( The Settlers of the Beekman Patent , Vol.1, p. 734), when Daniel Odell the Loyalist would be about 16 years old. So, Daniel the Loyalist may be the son of Augustine Odell from parts unknown/yet to be determined. As to Elizabeth Odell, Daniel's widow, they were apparently married in 1789 (William Inglis Moore, Grave Stones of Acadia p. 51 - Thanks Dot). Therefore, given Daniel's age (about 56) at the time of this marriage; the fact he had several married daughters named in his will; and the language in his will identifying his "youngest sons" and his "youngest daughters," I suspect Elizabeth was at least Daniel's second wife. Thanks again! Ben Moseley
Ben: I have recently done Loyalist research in NYS as well. I found a book online that gave me my ancestor's signature, but I do not see O'Dell there, as it was Kings CountyHowever, in looking at a reference the author mentions for signing the Standard in Suffolk County, it might be you could find the Standard for Westchester. First, the book I found is http://archive.org/details/revolutionaryinc00onde (signers pg 166, Submission of Kings County) This book above is just Suffolk and Kings County, with the list for Kings given and for Suffolk reference to source. On page 18 the author quotes the content of the Oath for Suffolk County and refers to the many Loyalist supporters who signed in Suffolk Cty and where the list may be found. On searching that source - Peter Force's American Archives - I found http://www.hopefarm.com/peforce.htm -- Now I cannot tell which particular Volume has the signers for Westchester but perhaps with some further checking here or contacting the phone number top of page, one might find that county record. The individual volumes can be purchased for download for $7.00. Hope you can find your list. I so appreciate www.Internet Archive.org. What a wonderful asset to research to find so many old historical books that I would not know where to begin to find or be able to access in any of those distant libraries. Thanks, Carol - & to all who responded with suggestions to my dilemma -- Unfortunately, no consensus as to what James WILKINS' occupation might have been. I know he was not the James Albert WILKINS of Port Lorne, as he was married by 1871. The James WILKINS I am tracing was a James Eastburn WILKINS (the spelling of his middle name may be a corruption - and perhaps a clue) b. 14 Oct 1853 according to the 1901 census. I am making an assumption that the James WILKINS in the 1871 Aylesford South census is the one I am looking for (no other James WILKINS of the approximate age appears in the 1871 N.S. census other than James Albert WILKINS). The one I know I am tracing appears in the 1881 Hessian Line census living with a Bohaker family in Bear River; in the 1891 Clementsvale census living with a Milner family in Victory; and in the 1901 Clements West census living by himself in Waldeck West. He married as a bachelor in November 1901 an Emma Jane Cress. At that time he gave his place of birth as Aylesford, Kings Co., his occupation as seaman, and his parents as William & Susan. I can find no others WILKINS offspring of said William & Susan (only those of a William H Wilkins & Eliza A Sabean, m. 1849 in Middleton, and a William Wilkins & Isabella Rowles? of Wilmot m. 1847). When James died in 1913 in Waldeck West, his death record gives his place of birth as Margaretsville, Anna. Co. Concerted efforts for years by a granddaughter of his to find his origins have been fruitless. She doesn't have a computer, so I've taken up the challenge. One curious bit of info - initially listed as Baptist, sometime between 1881 & 1891 he changed to Church of England. Oh yes, his son's names were Samuel Henry; John Lord; Walter William; and Collin Glenville. Perhaps there are some clues in their names. I know there were several Walters in the N.S. Wilkins' family tree. Thanks for any and all assistance! Actually, Bob, if I'm reading the household indicators correctly, James Wilkins was living in a separate section of the house of "Eunic" Saunders, widow (her bachelor son Alfred being listed as son of household). Eunice (Spinney) Saunders was the second wife of Timothy Saunders, eldest son of the New England Planter Timothy Saunders. According to Calnek (History of the County of Annapolis) early members of this family "did a vast and most valuable pioneer work in developing the agricultural resources of the county". Also, the census record indicates James Wilkins was attending school. I find it remarkable for a 19-yr old "boy" to be attending school in rural N.S. in 1871. So I'm leaning toward James being an apprentice farmer, but leaning is probably as far as I will be able to get . . . See my next posting for a more complete story of this James Wilkins, and my plea for assistance in determining his origins.
