Hi Everyone: John Musgrave married Elizabeth Roberts at St Paul's Anglican Church 3 April, 1801 (Terry Punch - Religious Marriages in Halifax). Who were Elizabeth Roberts parents? What was her birthdate? Any other useful information? (baptism of children?) John Musgrave was born in New York in 1779, and later (1783) moved to Shelburne/Cape Breton. I am assuming he met Elizabeth Roberts in Halifax, where I am assuming/hoping her parents were living. According to John Musgrave's death notice in The Times of July 3, 1843, he died at sea and was for many years a resident of Halifax. He may have been a mariner, as his father and a number of his siblings were. Thanks Wayne

What is your source for the John Wolfe and Laura Duncanson marriage? If it occurred before 1864 it is probably not in NSHVS unless a marriage bond had been made. Per NSHVS found at https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/ a John Wolf who married Laura Duncanson 13 Mar 1873 in a Baptist church in Horton, Kings County was age 23, born and residing in Falmouth son of Charles and Mary. This marriage does not agree with an 1872 birth year for a son. Ethel Schurman age 18, residing and born in Mount Denison and John Wolf age 23, son of John and Laura residing in Hantsport born Boston MA were married in a Baptist Church in Horton on 19 Feb 1898. The birth date for John William Wolfe comes from his age in his death record. The surety for a birth date in a death record is low. Searching familysearch.org I do not find Laura √, Wolfe, with spouse John √ living living in MA in the 1880 or 1900 Census nor NS in the 1881 Census I do not find John and Laura in the 1891 or , 1901 NS or PE Census. I do find John and Ethel in the 1901 and 1911 Census, the latter given below: 29 124 Wolfe John N M Head M Nov 1873 37 30 124 Wolfe Ethel M F Wife M Jan 1880 30 31 124 Wolfe Harold C M Son S Jun 1898 13 32 124 Wolfe Edward E M Son S Jun 1903 8 33 124 Wolfe Laura M F Dau S Aug 1909 1 34 124 Wolfe Charles M M Son S Apr 1909 1 I suggest joining and asking on the BOSTON-STATES list for a look up in the Milton VRs >
William Schurman, Loyalist from New Rochelle, New York, who settled in Bedeque, P.E.I., in 1784. He had eleven children. His youngest son John, left the Island in 1823 and settled in River Philip, Nova Scotia; John's youngest son Samuel, moved to Mt. Denson, married a Shaw and had a daughter Ethel Schurman who married John William Wolfe, born 14 Oct. 1872 in Milton, Ma. USA, died 6 April 1954 in Windsor, Hants County, N.S.. I am interested in any information on John William Wolfe's father John Wolfe. He was married to Laura Duncanson. Thanks in advance for any help. Alan

Hi everyone, first a little background info on naming patterns for German Descendants for this family. Most boys had their first names as John (English) Johan(n) (German); girls all started with Mary (English) Maria (German). It was not uncommon to have members of this family switch from English/German spellings, be known by their first names on some documents, and their second name on others. Some members of this family not only had 2 names but 3. In the case of Maria Ernst, her proper name was Maria/Mary Maud Euphimia "Effie" Ernst. In Jared's message May 3, 2012 he posts the 1911 census, line 36 Jane Ernst. This was my grandmother and her full proper name was Mary Jane Ernst; her 3 sons and 1 daughter always referred to her Mary Jane but she was known as Jane or Janie; she married my grandfather John "Charles" Walker. Jane's mother was Amelia Sarah Margaret Neiforth, from Seaforth, NS. She died in 1974 and I recall visiting her several times; for she was quite a character. She always smoked a pipe and if anyone came to visit she would quickly hide it under her apron because pipe smoking was un-lady like. Her apron had many burn holes in it. Although she was a smoker she lived to the age of 96 her only infirmity was diabetes and she had a penchant for dietetic chocolates which my father and I always brought when we visited her; she was also very fluent in German. She was known by several aka's: Amie, May/Mae, Mildred, Emilia, Mary, Sarah & Margie to name a few; I knew her as Grannie Ernst. Her 1974 newspaper obituary listed her as May Ernst. William Leander, Amelia S M Nieforth and family moved to Bayer's Road area of Halifax (also known as Dutch Village/Town); which is why they are shown living with William's uncle Reuben on the 1911 census. They were getting ready to move. The house still stands, is one of the 3 from the corner of Romans Ave (I think it is currently painted brown). This would have been how Mary Jane Ernst met my grandfather John "Charles" Walker for the Walkers lived on the other side of the street. Confusion over who was Gracie's Errnst's father - Anne Druscilla Graham was married before to a "Coates" but he died before Gracie was born. Family stories state that Anne was from Digby area moved to Dartmouth immediately after the death of her husband "Coates" (our family thinks he died from consumption). Expecting and looking for work she met James Henry who needed help with his young family while his first wife was ailing. This is why it seems strange for Gracie to have "Coates" scratched out and replaced with Ernst on her records & Sarah/Anne for her mother. Gracie was born from Anne while working as help for James Henry and Sarah. Sarah dies when Gracie would have been about 3-5 years old. The Preston area that most of the records refer to was also known as Lake Major/Westphal. When James Henry Ernst passes there was some sort of a family rift with some of his children from his first marriage with the spouse of his 2nd marriage. As far as what we Walkers know is that James Henry felt that the children of his first marriage had already established themselves. Since Gracie and Percy had very little he left the lands to them to help them become established. The area is now a golf course I believe. To add to the confusion of names, James Henry's first wife was Sarah Robina Hirtle; but she was also known by the last name of Hartlin/Hartling. I'll try to post a descendant listing later.

Children - James 21, Sarah 19, Hester 17, Henry 15, Reuben 14, William 12, Catherine 10, Maud 8, Arthur 5, and Charlotte 4. Some observations. Eri in 1881 is James in 1891. Agnes in 1881 is Sarah in 1891. Ester, Hester. But how does Ada become Reuben?? Sarah in 1881 is now Catherine in 1891. The Reuben aged 24 is next door to James in 1891 aged 34, and married with children. Again under Ernes. Agnes married in 1897 as Agnes. Maud married in 1902. William married in 1900 Amelia Nieforth
Okay, never say never, and never give up... I guess, for whatever reason, William and Amelia were not enumerated in 1901 as married... No IDEA why, but hey, at least now I've found out who your Maria REALLY is! A daughter mentioned in 1891 census, proved the key: Maud Euphemia Ernst, aged 19, m. Robert Samuel Cole inu Dartmouth, NS on 19-Dec-1902, he was 25. She was b. Preston, daughter of James and Sarah. Robert died 28-Jun-1949 at Fairview, Halifax, NS.He was widowed, so Maud died previous to him. He was b. Woodlawn, 16-Jan-1875. "Effie" Cole is listed in 1911 census as b. Jul-1883 I was thinking THIS may be your Maria, but still a bit concerned why William was listed as single in 1901, when he surely married Amelia in 1900!?!?!!!? Finally found Effie's death record, She died in Fairview as well, also in 1949. She died 13 Mar 1949, b. Halifax Co, NS, on 13-Jul-1883, d/o James Henry Ernst and Sarah Hirtle. Listed on death record as Effie Maude Cole. So, in effect, your Maria was actually Maude or Maud Euphemia. :-) Jared > > Well, I'm no expert on the ERNST lines at all, but decided I'd give this > query a shot. Well, I'm no expert on the ERNST lines at all, but decided I'd give this query a shot. Being as I've no preconceptions, I came up with a POSSIBLE theory that you may want to consider. William, son of James and Sarah, also noted in the 1901 census. He MARRIED a woman in 1900, who does not appear anywhere else. Though he and "Maria" are listed as "Single" I suggest, on the contrary, both were married, and to each other. Here is my "evidenciary" trail, starting with the information you provided, and trying to sort out the 2nd wife of James in the process... Well, James and Sarah were married 23-Oct-1869 in Bridgewater, Lunenburg Co, NS He was 21, she 20. He was b. @1848, her around 1849. 1901 census shows James' wife as Annie, b. 13-Sep-1861, not Sarah R. b. @1849! - Did he marry an Annie 2nd? Could find no mention. In fact, in 1911, wife is Gertie, and same DOB, mostly (Sep-1862), so what happened to Sarah? Here is that Preston Census: 10 22 101 Ernst James M Head M Dec 2 1847 53 10 23 101 Ernst Annie F Wife M Sep 13 1861 39 10 24 101 Ernst William M Son S May 15 1878 22 10 25 101 Ernst Maria F Daughter S Jul 13 1882 18 10 26 101 Ernst Arthur M Son S Oct 15 1885 15 10 27 101 Ernst Gracie F Daughter S Nov 10 1890 10 10 28 101 Ernst Percy M Son S Sep 27 1895 5 Gracie and Percy, surely, are children of James' 2nd wife. Annie D. Graham. However, the answer to your question is a bit "riddlish"... William L. Ernst, son of James by his 1st wife, Sarah, married Amelia S. M. Nieforth on 20-Oct-1900 at Dartmouth, Hfx Co, NS. He was 22, she was 23. Unless she died REALLY soon after they married, I wonder if the "M" in her name was for Maria? Granted, the age is not good, but may have lied for marriage record? Also, on that marriage record, William is born in Preston, while Amelias S. M. is born in Seaforth., d/o William and Catherine, he is of course, son of James and Sarah. Annie S. Graham m. James Henry Ernst (Ernest), 13-May-1895, at Halifax. He was 46, widower, she was 33, spinster. So, though Gracie showed her mother as Annie on later records, she was d/o Sarah. Only Percy COULD have been son of Annie. That means Sarah d. 1890-1895. Still, was Maria their daugther, or wife of William??? 1911 Census shows William AND Amelia as follows (in Preston): 30 6 Ernst Reuben M Head W Jul 1856 54 1901 Links 31 6 Ernst Frank M Son S Nov 1895 15 1901 Links 32 6 Ernst Wilfred M Son S May 1903 8 1901 33 6 Ernst William M Nephew M May 1879 32 1901 34 6 Ernst Amelia F Wife M Jul 1877 33 1901 Links (so, born in JULY, just like "Maria" just 5 years diff.) 35 6 Ernst May F Daughter S Feb 1901 10 1901 (born JUST after 1901 enumeration?) 36 6 Ernst Jane F Daughter S Feb 1903 8 1901 37 6 Ernst Gertrude F Daughter S Jan 1905 6 1901 38 6 Ernst Stanly M Son S Aug 1909 1 Cheers, Jared P.S. This is simply a theory, but I believe it could be proven with a few more pieces of evidence. Just wish the Canadian census in 1901 used the same child count the US 1900 census used, as that might have been the key factor. *sigh* > Hello everyone: > > Does anyone have any more information on Maria Ernst, daughter of James > Henry Ernst (born Bridgewater 1847) > and Sarah R Hirtle (born 1850). > > The only record I've been able to find is the 1901 Census where she lived > with her family in Preston, NS. > I've been unable to locate her elsewhere. > > Does anyone have any further information on her? > > Thank you very much for any help you can give. > > Claudia Malloch > ---------------------------------------- > Basic List Commands: > > 1. Hello everyone: Does anyone have any more information on Maria Ernst, daughter of James Henry Ernst (born Bridgewater 1847) and Sarah R Hirtle (born 1850). The only record I've been able to find is the 1901 Census where she lived with her family in Preston, NS. I've been unable to locate her elsewhere. Does anyone have any further information on her? Thank you very much for any help you can give. Claudia Malloch
Would anyone have any information on the family of Francis E. Crooks who was born about 1893 in Nova Scotia to George W. Crooks and Mary/May H. Fernandes/Fernandoes. George W. Crooks and Mary H. were married in 1876. Mary Fernandes was the daughter of John and Rachel Fernandes of Sherbrooke, Guysborough, NS. Frances married John H. Reed in Boston in 1913. John H. Reed was born in Calais, Maine in or about the year 1886. He was the son of Maggie McCluskey and John H. Reed. They had a family of four children by 1930 including Mary Edwina, George W., Stanley E. and William F. in Quincy, Massachusetts. I would like to correspond with descendants of this couple or possibly learn more about the Fernandes family in Shelburne/Guysborough Counties, NS. Was this family from Portugal? I believe that there may be a Port Roseway connection. Sincerely, Inez Hoffman

Their COMPLETELY PHOTOGRAPHED cemeteries will have world wide exposure on this free-access National Cemetery Photograph website. * 4. If you and/or your organization are interested in your local cemeteries going online, please contact us at: info@gravemarkers.ca - there are no cemeteries too big or too small. Cemetery records. Over the past 13 years this website has been instrumental in breaking down many researchers' brick walls. In addition, many folks have travelled to cemeteries which are onboard, to "walk" the cemeteries. Please note that on some cemeteries we have included the "record holders" contact information for the township, town or city cemetery. * 3. Missing cemeteries. If you don't see a Community and its' cemeteries online...it means we have not photographed the cemeteries in that area. Would you or some of your family or friends be interested in helping out by photographing your local cemeteries.? * * FEEDBACK ******* * We are always interested in feedback from Visitors to the website. I cannot tell what information you have received because of the way this list is set up to Reply-to-Sender. The only Powell Marriage in Terry Punch's Religious Marriages in Halifax 1768 -1841 is that of Nathaniel Powell to Jane Forbes, 29 Jun 1815 in St Matthews Presbyterian Church. Dwayne Meisner has NS Census transcriptions at http://www.dwaynemeisner.com/census/novascotia/index.php and he has Halifax County 1838 and 1851 Halifax City 1851. Have you searched the Thomas Powells born c 1833 in Nova Scotia? There is a Thomas Powell born c 1833 in Halifax marrying in Portsmouth VA Sometimes when asked for a birth place at a distance from the place a person may just give the name of the nearest large city so I suggest looking in a wider area, Halifax County and NS. > US military records shows he was born in Halifax Nova Scotia. > Thomas died in the > civil war in Little Rock Arkansas May 22, > 1865. What military records is he found in? The only battle around Little Rock was Bayou Fourche/Little Rock, September 10, 1863. Did he die of wounds received in that battle or another? bob gillis
Thanks to all who have replied so far. A few have asked for more details. I have no more details from the Nova Scotia side. Here is what I have Thomas Powell born abt 1833. US military records shows he was born in Halifax Nova Scotia. He married Julia Ann Peabody November 25, 1860, in Buchanan County Missouri. Julia was originally from Maine. Thomas died in the civil war in Little Rock Arkansas May 22, 1865. They had one child my great grandfather. Birth name Thomas Powell, but his adult life was Thomas Snyder. I cannot find a adoption record, or 2nd marriage to a Snyder for Julia. I want to find the parents of Thomas Powell Sr and the connection to Nova Scotia and beyond. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have hit a road block with my gg grandfather Thomas Powell. He died in America in the civil war, but his military record shows he was born in 1833 in Halifax Nova Scotia. I know he was in America as early as 1860 since that is when he married my gg grandmother, but have no other information. Would like to find his parents names, siblings, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
>From the Land registry office: There are many deeds, but no Jacob in Yarmouth, Annapolis or Digby county. 1799 James EVERIT and wife (Alhi?) to Jeremiah EVERIT, "loving son". Gave 1/2 the farm, stock, etc; Lot#14 "south of the Sissaboo" (S.River, Weymouth) in equal shares. This is likely today around what is called Sissaboo Falls area. 1806 James EVERITT - mortgage from James MOODY for 80 lbs. The land was bordered by Joseph DUNBAR on east, Sissaboo river south below the falls, north by the S. River. Signs James EVERITT. There are deeds between 1799-1808. 1872 Milba Marling to Peter Marling for $400., 50 acres of Land on the Tusket River bounded [loosely] by the public road, Job Raynard, the lake, and George S. Brown. 17 Feb 1876 - Milba Marling and Martha his wife sell land in Grand Joggin (Hill Grove) to John S. McNeill for $300.00, bounded by lands of Maurice [Morris] Taylor and the brook. (sounds like Craig's hill maybe, or around the bend after the bridge) 1894 - 'of Tusket Lakes' 1913 - deed to "Bell Neck School".
