Pardon me for interjecting on your response to the 1881 at Collections Canada....They have a search page, and then you can view the original image, it is not just a carry over from the LDS. Try http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/miso-magicdisc-overview.htm or Google Mounting iso as cdrom Basically, you create an ISO image of the cdrom, and mount it. You never need to insert the CD Again Kevin http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~podgursky/ updated 09 Jul 2011 On Fri, May 11, 2012 at 10:50 AM, bob gillis <robertgillis@verizon.net> wrote: > I have the 1881 Canadian Census CDs. Yes, someone does. :-) On the CD that contains the 1881 Census, find the Update\NewFiles\Network Setup Instructions.rtf file. It contains step-by-step instructions on how to do it. However, setting it up to run on a single machine requires that you spoof the software into thinking it is running on a network by creating a networked pseudo-drive on that machine (I created a "Z:\" drive). Further, this cannot be done on a 64-bit Windows 7 machine unless you have the Professional or Ultimate editions since you must set up a virtual Windows XP machine and install the 1881 Census on it. The C-H obits and Index files requires the virtual XP machine as well, but once you have that set up, all three run quite nicely. -----Bob H----- On 5/11/2012 9:50 AM, bob gillis wrote: > I have the 1881 Canadian Census CDs. Hi All: Hmmmmm. The last time I checked the Ancestry.com "access" at the FHC's was an extremely limited access by which you only got to see the things that the LDS had contributed to Ancestry way back when; e.g., the 1881 US Census transcription. Unlimited access to Ancestry at the FHC's went out maybe five or six years ago and, last I knew only the six largest FHC's had full access. Has something now changed and full access is back? PS. I don't like paying for access to historical records but if I didn't do it, many of said records wouldn't be on-line today. So I happily pay my $300 annual Ancestry fee, and being a genealogy fanatic, I get my money's worth. Others, who aren't quite so fanatical, might not. :-) PPS. The LDS have made significant progress in putting their holdings on-line and if you haven't checked out the "New Family Search" site, you should. But I suspect it will be many years (~ fifty?) before they have all their stuff digitized and indexed. -----Bob H----- On 5/11/2012 9:40 AM, J. While I can offer you no advice on loading the CDs onto your computer, when I use the following link: https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/show#uri=http://www.familysearch.org/searchapi/search/collection/1804541 I can get individual results plus a listing of the household the individual is connected to at the very bottom of the screen. [I searched George Goldsmith in case your results do not match mine. You can then try my searched name and see what happens] SueB > I have the 1881 Canadian Census CDs. I have the 1881 Canadian Census CDs. I have not used them in several years as the old familysearch.org Census was much more convenient. FS has moved the Census to the new Discover Your Family History and it is now unusable, either no records found or just the person searched for is found, with none of the family. Does anyone know how to load the Census CDs on the Hard Drive and search from there? bob gillis

Yeah, Brian. Ancestry is now a very good resource when used with discernment as any source should be - but to find a primary record in another country is worth the dollar a day. And access is free at the FH Centers. I think about how the records had to be obtained before the last decade of Internet. Living thousands of miles from "home", I had to rely on cousins and SKS and boards and lists like this, or else hire a researcher at even greater cost. Still do occasionally and it is worth the cost, too, producing what all the free" sites cannot... I thought there was technically such a thing as a direct descendant - as in a direct (Gilchrist) line through your father from the The Ancestor to you? Someone else, like a cousin, has a different (Gilchrist) direct male line to your Most Recent Common Ancestor. The yDNA is a genetic thread carried by the male "line" back directly forever - one way of potentially bridging iffy" records. Carol Harding -------Original Message------- From: J.
