Dear List: Through a Colchester County deed, I'm now able to connect Daniel McNutt of Cumberland County, Nova Scotia with a Phineas McNutt of Onslow, Colchester County, Nova Scotia. The deed, found in Book 10, page 160 (dated 04 Aug. 1821), is between Phineas McNutt and Elizabeth his wife of Onslow and Daniel McNutt of Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. Phineas McNutt is further described by the Land Registration Office as "Phineas McNutt 2nd." The deed was witnessed by Abner McNutt and John McNutt. The deed contains no descriptors such as "my son," "my nephew," etc. The conveyed realty is lot no. 69 of the first division and lies between the South & North branches of the North River. Might someone know the relationship between Daniel and Phineas/Elizabeth McNutt? Was Elizabeth McNutt Phineas' one and only wife? Who might Elizabeth McNutt's parents be? Thank you. Ben Moseley

Cemetery records. Over the past 13 years this website has been instrumental in breaking down many researchers' brick walls. In addition, many folks have travelled to cemeteries which are onboard, to "walk" the cemeteries. Please note that on some cemeteries we have included the "record holders" contact information for the township, town or city cemetery. * 3. Missing cemeteries. If you don't see a Community and its' cemeteries online...it means we have not photographed the cemeteries in that area. Would you or some of your family or friends be interested in helping out by photographing your local cemeteries.? * * FEEDBACK ******* * We are always interested in feedback from Visitors to the website. I am trying to find whom Elizabeth Ann Reinhardt born 30 Jan 1844 in Beach Meadows, QC to Caspar/Gaspar and Eliza Ann, married and when she died. Also what is the birth name of Gaspar's wife born c1820; O'Neil or Manthorne (see below) An Eliza Primrose married age 37 was living with her parents in the 1881 Census. She is not the Eliza Primrose age 51 living in Pictou Town with son Clarence age 23 In NSHVS I find the birth of a James Clarence Howard Primrose born 2 May 1864 in Halifax to Alexander Primrose, Barrister and Elisabeth Catherine Rebecca Daly I do not think in the 1901 Census she is the Elizabeth Primrose age 60 born 17 Mar 1840. I think that she is the above. I do find her in the 1911 Census in Liverpool as a housekeeper for the William Conrad family She is most probably the Eliza Primrose, died 1927 in Middlefield, Queens County Registration Year: 1927 - Book: 129 - Page: 114. Her parent were recorded as Jaspar Rhynard and Elizabeth Manthorne. Informant was her sister Janet or Janel I cannot find a Reinhardt/Rhynard - Primrose marriage in Shankle , NSHVS or FS. bob gillis

Richard, To address your point about the census discs, "why would you ever use them?": There seems to be a belief that once some web site goes online it will remain there, and available, forever. The reality of the situation is that it remains there only as long as somebody maintains the content, that somebody pays the fees which support the server which holds and (well) serves the data to the web site and finally somebody pays the renewal fees for the "domain" registration. There may also be other fees to do with royalties on the data and rental of lookup services, etc., but this is a minimum. The main point is that a web site will only remain available while someone or some organization is prepared to go on shelling out money for it to stay there. (On a different "tack," I also know of some researchers who want to continue their hobby when they are at their "weekend cottage" where the internet isn't available yet, or while they are traveling and can't rely on their access speed or quality.) For private and commercial sites this is a simple financial decision. For "public" sites (and i'm including all branches, and types of publicly funded corporation here, libraries, universities, even Canada Post) the decision is largely based on the prevailing politics and current public opinion. For instance the Library and Archives of Canada have just had their budget "slashed" and since virtually everything they do provides some sort of service, some of their services are bound to suffer. If, on the other hand, you actually own a data disk or a book or a copy of a document on whatever media, it is yours for as long as you decided you want to keep it. You are not relying on someone else's decision on what should remain available and what should be deleted, to keep it available to you. Keeping proprietary software accessible can be a pain but you CAN rely on it to be there when you want it. I realize that many readers will look at my sig. line and think, "Well, he's bound to say that!" and I admit there is a good chance that I'm biased, but I'm sure that if you just think about it you will realize what I'm saying is factual. Not some tissue of lies or some sales pitch, or even a political policy. Online sites are fantastic resources for finding data. There's nothing better. But once you have found your data and have decided you want to be able to access it at any time then you should look to getting some sort of a copy of it under your control so you can ensure it is always available to you. On the Collections Canada site when I am having trouble finding someone because of a misspelled last name I leave that blank and use only a 1st name and also fill in the area or province that I am looking in. I find that works for me especially if you have an approximate age for the person and better yet if the first name is not that common . Hope this is useful to someone. As an illustration. This is from the Mormom census records for 1881. Henry LEWIS M Male German 32 Nova Scotia Fisherman Church of England Amelia LEWIS M Female German 22 Nova Scotia Church of England Lofly LEWIS Male German <1 Born: Dec; 4/12 Nova Scotia Church of England Now if you go to the Collections Canada site, and search on Lofly Lewis, it will take you to the actual image of the census page, and Lo and behold, that family is Snair. But it was transcribed as Lewis. If you look at that page on the actual images there are a number of Snair families that were transcribed as Lewis.
Quite true. But the Collections Canada census is indexed using the Mormon index. I have a Snare family on the 1881 census, and some of them are indexed under the name Lewis. It's a transcription error, but still the index reads Lewis, when it should be Snare. And what you are saying is my point exactly. Why do they use a transcribed census when they can view the original images. You always go with the original, so why use the transcription?? To me it's a no brainer. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Vickie Reid" <vereid@hotmail.com> To: <nova-scotia-l@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, May 12, 2012 5:24 PM Subject: Re: [NS-L] [LL] Familysearch 1881 Census CDs > > Pardon me for interjecting on your response to the 1881 at Collections Canada....They have a search page, and then you can view the original image, it is not just a carry over from the LDS.
