When the Canadian (Harper) Gov't announced funding cuts a few weeks ago this was a topic for a few days, but less memorable because loss of jobs was emphasized more. Sharing a comment from one cousin with Canadian roots, which I think expresses the feelings of many others: *Thank you for sending me the link to the article. The idea that your libraries may suffer this kind of treatment is unconscionable. As one of your now-American cousins, this would seriously affect and maybe destroy the ability of me and my other cousins to research, discover and retrieve our Canadian heritage. My line arrived in Nova Scotia in the 1770s becoming pioneers and builders helping pave the way for Canada's future. Although my grandfather returned to the US in 1903, that little detail has never taken away from my bond to Canada, especially The Maritimes where the family grew and prospered. It is shocking to think that modern-day politicians are even considering the limiting (even reversing) the gathering of historical documents that define the greatness of Canada. I found the McElmon I am looking for. Charles Matthew McElmon was enumerated in the 1871 census as a farmer at Lower Londonderry, close to his father James' house, with "Six men domiciled elsewhere" in his house. These would have been men working on the construction of the railway bridge. James McElmon is described in Daniel Johnson's New Brunswick newspaper archive as living "at the foot of the Folleigh River bridge' when his house caught fire ca. 1876. Both McElmons were enumerated in '71 as farmers, but both had lumber mills as well, so I'm oretty sure they provided the wood for the first bridge that led to the summit of Folleigh Mountain... just need to find local press coverage to determine how much was paid for it before the iron bridge was installed. Flemimg appears to have left that detail out of his report to the railway commissioners. Jay Underwood Elmsdale, NS www.Pennydreadfulpublishing.com Make a moral choice: Buy a printed book! Truro was a big central hub back in the day. I am amazed by how often family roots from most everywhere have pasted through Truro on the way to somewhere else. I am new to this list? I wondered if anyone can help me I just found out from a death certificate that Malcolm Henry GRANT was - Born: 1837 Nova Scotia, Canada son of Roderick GRANT I have no idea what they were doing in Canada when I thought they were from Scotland I would be very grateful for any leads to find information as I know very little about the Canada records. Sincerely Jill in South Australia I can do any look ups in South Australia for anyone if they email me, just ask Jill [ARNOLD] MORLEY jillmorley@bigpond.com O.P.C. Hi Jill: This probably won't help you at all, but there was a Roderick GRANT, b. 1795 in Scotland, who shows up in the 1871 Census of Caribou, Pictou, NS along with wife Isabella b. 1802 in Scotland, son Roderick b. 1842 and sister "Siby" b. 1848, both in NS. I am not familiar with Pictou church records (and there are no civil records that I know of) that would cover 1837. -----Bob H----- On 6/6/2012 7:09 PM, Morley wrote: > I am new to this list? > I wondered if anyone can help me > I just found out from a death certificate that > Malcolm Henry GRANT > was - Born: 1837 Nova Scotia, Canada > son of Roderick GRANT > I have no idea what they were doing in Canada when I thought they were from > Scotland > I would be very grateful for any leads to find information > as I know very little about the Canada records. > > Sincerely Jill in South Australia > I can do any look ups in South Australia for anyone if they email me, just > ask > > Jill [ARNOLD] MORLEY > jillmorley@bigpond.com > O.P.C. My interest in the McElmon family is as an historian of Nova Scotia railways. The first Intercolonial Railway bridge over Folly River was called McElmon's bridge, and I'm trying to determine if that's because McElmon was the name of the region at the time, or if one of the McElmon's from Folleigh Mountain/Londonderry built it...any clues? Hello Don, I think the family that you're searching may have spelled their surname as MacElmon. The N.S. Vitals site (www.novascotiagenealogy.com) has an image of the death registration for: Elledge Havelock MacElmon, born Nov 12, 1863 at Folleigh Lake, s/o John Henry MacElmon & Unknown Aitken, died Jul 29, 1943 in Dartmouth. He was a married man at the time of death. The informant was his son, E.L. MacElmon. I don't have a copy, but there was an obituary published for: Mrs. Sarah MacElmon (Moncton, NB) - publ. on Aug 5, 1967 You may be able to get both obituaries from the Spring Garden Road Library (use Google to get their web site and then look for "Ask a librarian" - I think they may charge $4 or $5 each). I want to thank all of you who responded to my request. I appreciate your transcriptions and advice. I am aware of J.V. Duncanson's books and that he was a descendant of James Duncanson for whom I requested the look up. I was really in hopes it would list the ship's name that he arrived in and maybe where in Scotland he was from...... we have a "possibly Aberdeeen" and a ca 1773 for the year of arrival??? For you Nova Scotia history buffs..... were there Scottish troops that came in around then or is it more likely he came as a result of the Scottish clearances??? Again... thanks to all of you. You've been extremely helpful. Paulette
