Hello George, I don't know if this is your guy or not, but the Halifax Chronicle Herald published an obituary for: Ernest Eric Murphy (Halifax) - obit. publ. on July 16, 1983 You can get a copy of this obituary by contacting the Spring Garden Road Library in Halifax - I believe they charge $5.00 per obituary or they may FAX it for free to your local library. Hi Everyone, I am trying to find out what became of one of my relatives. Ernest Murphy was born in P.E.I. in October 1905, and I was told that he was last known to be somewhere in Nova Scotia working for the A & P food chain. There is no marriage or death for him in the latest version of the Historical Vital Statistics from the Archives. Does anyone remember an Ernest Murphy in Nova Scotia anywhere who fits this description? Thanks, George Sanborn Charlottetown PE ---------------------------------------- Basic List Commands: 1. And let's not also forget the Port Royal Habitation in the Annapolis Valley; original place for the Order of Good Cheer! There really so much to see and do. If you're also interested in scenic views taking a trip all the way down to the tip of Digby Neck is also very nice; to get to the point will require usage of some of the car ferries to the "tip of the neck", plus you'll get to see the Fundy Tidal bore in action. There's a website set up, sponsored by the provincial government to help people like you in planning you trip; it's www.novascotia.com. Since there truly is so much to see and do I'd recommend on zeroing in on 1 -3 places of interest; as some are full day adventures+ (ie. Louisbourg) and travelling to these places also means some road time. Another note: most of our museums/heritage sites charge admissions, so bring extra cash. To get a feel for what these extra admission charges might cost visit the museum/heritage site that you plan to choose. Looks to me it's nothing more than a links page. I suggest, if you wish to explore via a page of links, you might want to try www.CyndisList.com and search on whatever province, state, country, continent, surname, record type, etc. The majority of sites linked by Cyndi Howell's site are free. Just sayin' ... This looks like an attempt to reinvent that particular wheel, and make some money through the ads posted. Not saying it should not be used as a resource, but it is redundant to what Cyndi has been doing with wwww.CyndisList.com for nearly two (maybe over two by now) decades. Yes, consider seeing Iona in Cape Breton! ... You can spend an entire day there but even a few hours is well worth it for the history, beautiful scenery and wonderful people who work at the museum. The Cabot Trail IS a great place to go for sure and I would suggest going clock wise because it is a much nicer view travelling DOWN Smokey Mountain then it is driving up, when the view is at your back. :0) >From Iona, head to Baddeck where you will find the Alexander Graham Bell Museum, or by pass that area and head directly through the beautiful Margaree towards Cheticamp. Along the way there is Egypt Falls and Lake Anslie. Cheticamp and Pleasant Bay have whale watching and the Skyline trail, known for its extreme beauty but also known for it's coyote problems so be careful. You might even see a black bear and her cubs as we did last summer. You should be able to find lodging in Cheticamp or if you're camping, try the Stoneybrook campground just passed Cheticamp. It's the most photographed place along the trail. Next you must head toward Meat Cove and don't miss the lone shieling along the way! Meat Cove is a scenic fishing village at the tip of the highlands and its view is majestic. A great place to stay nearby is a B&B in Aspy Mountain called Oakwood Manor, or if you are camping try the campground at Meat Cove. You won't forget it. All of these places can be googled, or I would be glad to send you photographs. :0) Travel down the beautiful Smokey Mountain and find Indian brook, named because... you guessed it... the Native peoples used to have a camp there as late as the early 1900's. Englishtown has a pleasant little ferry ride, and the gravesite and museum of the Giant- Angus Mac Askill. People are friendly and if you see a gathering at the local hall, join in! >From here you can go up Kelly's Mountain and on to the other side of the Island and Louisbourg or head back to the mainland but take highway 4 for the prettiest view. If you love history, than you'll not want to miss Louisbourg. Built by the French and twice taken over by the English, it has a rich history and the drive a long this coastline from Glace Bay to Morien Bay/ Myra to Lorraine to Louisbourg is beautiful with lots of places for swimming, lodging and camping. Lorraine has a very nice B & B called Foghorn Inn. I stayed there a few weeks ago and also at the the Point-of-View in Louisbourg. Both are a wonderful lodging experience. If you choose to partake in the supper at Point-of View, you will be treated to early French/Acadian music and food plus you dress up in time period costume that they provide. It was a lot of fun. :0) Highway 4 is a pretty drive along the BraDor lakes, passed Rita McNeil's Tea room, where you can pick up some great Island music and have tasty scones and other homemade biscuits with strawberry jam and cream. You'll understand what Rita is singing about once you have travelled this route. :0) At St.Peters go off the main road to Grande Greve and drive to the end of that road. There is the most beautiful beach and ocean view that will take your breath away. All the little communities in this area- River Bourgeois, Lynches River, Isle Madame... they will steal your heart away. Don't rush Cape Breton! I would suggest that you see it on your first trip to Nova Scotia and then see the other half of our province on your second trip! :0) On 2012-08-14, at 12:26 AM, Jeanne S wrote: > > Again, I would like to thank each of you who responded. Mr Gillis is right but there might be one thing that might save a little time even if it's only 45 minutes or so, that is I-90 toward Boston and then take Route 495 to 95. 495 skirts suburbs of Boston even more and I know for people going to Maine that is the way they would do it unless coming up from the south. Today I visited the Highland Village in Iona, Cape Breton and it was a wonderful experience. If you wanted an introduction to early life in Nova Scotia as well as a great explanation as to why many wanted to leave Scotland, you would do well to visit there. I have visited Fortress Louisbourg in Louisburg, Nova Scotia near Sydney in Cape Breton also. The Fortress is a recreation of a French fortress that really did exist in the 1750 ish time period. It was recreated from blue prints from the original fortress. The re-enactors are superb with their keeping in period for the person they are representing. The Cabot Trail is a wonderfully beautiful ride(two lane highway) though a Provinchial Park that winds from sea level to the top of French Mountain and down. The scenery is fabulous and we have seen whales of in the ocean when lunching at one of the rest stops. One the mainland of Nova Scotia I have stopped at Joggins and seen the fossil trees in the cliffs which astounded me. There is so much to see and so little time to see it all. But stop in Amherst at the tourist information center when you cross over from New Brunswick to Nova Scotia and get the Doers and Dreamers guide and a map and check out the brochures on the racks...the people who work there are kind and extremely knowledgeable about the places to stay and places to see. Have a wonderful trip, Kendra P.S. It takes me 6 hours from Boston, MA to Calais, ME where I cross over into Canada at St Stephen, New Brusnwick. And then 7 1/2 hours to Cape Breton from St Stephen. I'm afraid there is no Yarmouth to Bar Harbour ferry at all. It has been discontinued. There is however,a ferry from St. John , N.B. to Digby, N.S. twice daily across the Bay of Fundy.. It is a three hour trip and gets you on the Evangeline Trail through the Annapolis valley .Reservations are not difficult if there is a couple of days notice. Hope this helps. ----- Original Message ----- From: "bob gillis" <robertgillis@verizon.net> To: <nova-scotia@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 13, 2012 6:21 PM Subject: Re: [NS-L] Help with travel plans > You are not allowing much time to plan a trip like this. FYI, the Bar Harbor to Yarmouth Ferry (The Cat) stopped running over a year ago. Closest is the St. John to Digby Ferry. Have lost contact with George Fuller, formerly of Summerville, NS. Need to reach him. All email bounces back. If you have current email address, please send to me or contact George and tell him I am looking for him. Sorry to bother everyone, but I have some important photos for him. Thank you, and sorry to inconvenience the listserv, Barbara Gosse
I've had some truly great responses in the past hour or so...........great suggestions and extraneous details for things to do, etc. Thank you all so very much. I am so glad I thought to make this request on the List. Now to get down the road. If anyone has any more suggestions, I'll take it all! We are planning to travel to Nova Scotia very soon (Aug 18 to Sep 5 estimate). It is a trip that I've long dreamed of taking--even though most of my family history was in Ontario and New Brunswick. I can remember my mother reading Evangeline by Longfellow to me as a child. I also helped some of my family members do some Acadian research and am just hooked on the whole idea of this trip. My travel will originate in Minnesota, US, but will seriously head for NS after a visit to Niagara Falls. That is the leg of the journey for which I would like to request list help. If anyone has any suggestions on the BEST ROUTE (avoiding heavy trafficked cities, as we are traveling in an RV) between Niagara and NS, I'd appreciate any help. We would like a scenic and interesting route and the same after arriving in Nova Scotia. Slow-paced is our RV travel style. Cape Breton is a definite goal. Are the trails drivable or just walking trails? What is the weather like in late Aug/early Sep? Rain/clear skies normal? Good eating places and events or attractions not to be missed in our travel time period? Just anything that will enhance our first trip to this beautiful province. Many thanks in advance! Jeanne
Looking for descendants of William Stewart/Stuart Davis b in Windsor, Hants Co., NS m to Elizabeth McLean Willis. Both are buried in the Maplewood Cemetery in Windsor #137. Their children were; John Frederick b 1863 Bessie Isabella b 1865 Charlotte Sarah b 1867 Mary Katherine b 1869 Martha Louise b 1871, This is my grandmother she eloped to Sharon, Ma. and married Frederick L. Moss. He had jumped ship in Nova Scotia and stayed with the Redden family. Hattie Mildren b 1875 Edith Agnes b 1879 I do have who some of them married and where they lived. I also have William Stewart/Stuart's parents from a copy of his father William Davis b 1795 will in where he stated all of his children. I am looking for information on just who William Davis wife Sarah's maiden name was. It was not Fultz that I know of as that William's wife and children are not the same. My grandmother Martha Louise always said her grandmother's name was Sarah Stewart/Stuart and that was why her father had that for his middle name. If there is anyone out there connected to any of this family I would love to hear from you. Contact me at; rankin@tds.net I live in New Hampshire, not that far from Nova Scotia but getting to old to travel Dot Moss Smith
