I am always amazed at the wealth of information various people have. Now I have a question that is related to the SSDI. I am still searching for my Grandmother. I have found 2 marriages for her. However, that is where the trail stops. I found her birth, her parents, her sister and brother's birth in NS, however how can I track her only knowing her dob and not the name she died under? Thanks to all for the help! Ellen I Believe Friends are quiet Angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to Fly...
Hi: One slight correction, if I may. What appears in the SSDI is not the place of death, but rather the place the last SS check was mailed to, which is presumed to be (but isn't necessarily) that person's residence :-) -----Bob H----- ----- Original Message ----- From: "winston crawford" <iamkac2@worldnet.att.net> To: <NOVA-SCOTIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 13, 2007 2:59 PM Subject: Re: [NS-L] U.S. DEATH INDEX > Hi > Okay, on this one, I can be something of a resource. Hi Okay, on this one, I can be something of a resource. I retired from Social Security about a year ago, after almost 30 years. Here is how this works. Anyone that has a Social Security number (fewer in the past but virtually everyone who is a legal alien or citizen today) gets a number based on where they were living when they originally filed for benefits. For example, Midwest folks, like me, have numbers that were issued out of the Chicago region and they start with the number 3. West cost and California start with 5, the Atlanta region with 4. etc. It does not tell you where they lived state wise but what region of the country they were in when they filed for the card. As they are now done at birth almost exclusively, they will be an indication of family location in the future. And, yes. The 700 numbers were originally issued to rail road workers back in the 30s and 40s. They had to be working for the rail road when the number was issued but did not always stay there. They are now using the 700s again and I think that they are now used for some aliens who come to this country but will not be permanent residents. That changed about the time that I retired so they may have refined that some since then. This stuff changes almost daily sometimes. Hard to keep up when you are no longer part of the machine. Now, as for the death index, any one who has a number and dies, that death is recorded by the funeral director and passed on to Social Security. Always!!!! The death is recorded on the system and the information is then posted to the death index. A person could never have worked, had a number for a bank account, for example, and would show up there. That will give you a name, location of death and a date. They up date that a couple times a year for the public even though it is updated daily for the governments purposes. If the individual had no Social Security number and died (almost never these days) and the information was reported to the government, it will not show up on that list as there was no number with which to associate the death. Basically, it is a function that is used by Social Security to keep track of numbers and which are still in use. The fact that they share it with the public is an extra service and, pretty much, a gift. The only record for a birth in that period would be in a church record if she was baptized. You would have to know where they lived when she as born and the religion. You could write the churches that might fit and ask for a baptism record. The easiest is to use the birth date from the 1900 census. bob gillis
