    1. [NS-L] Information request: Ralph Conrad
    2. Sue Burns
    3. Would you have any idea where I may find info on a Ralph Conrad? Story goes that he was badly burned on a rum runner in 1931-32, set adrift and landed in New Glasgow suffering from amnesia. We know after several months he was reunited with his family. He was caretaker of the old town clock in Halifax amd then moved to Vancouver Island. The info we really need is the rum runner days where the incident was, we believe, run in a local newspaper with the caption "Do you know this man" Any info would be gratefully appreciated. Does anyone on the list have information on this man?? Thanks, Sue

    1. Re: [NS-L] U.S. DEATH INDEX
    2. That is correct. When my husband died in 1992, we were traveling across country in our Motorhome. We had a Mail Forwarding Service out of Cleveland, Ohio. My husband died in Nevada, and I brought him home to Buffalo, NY for burial. The social security index shows the Ohio address, much to my consternation. I have added a note to the site, but am not really sure what good that does. In a message dated 4/13/2007 3:59:08 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, bobh36@cox.net writes: One slight correction, if I may. What appears in the SSDI is not the place of death, but rather the place the last SS check was mailed to, which is presumed to be (but isn't necessarily) that person's residence :-) ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    2. Wanda Powell
    3. Many are right about SSI and last payment, it often messes up the process to change the direct deposit, and many banks like stores are chains. Often people will stick with the original bank rather than wait for a change of banking process which isn’t confusing to the bank but SSI is and other story. You’ll often find persons last payment may have been RI but died in FL or some other state. Many people travel to warmer climates for the winter but return north for the summer often its 6 months each area. Some are more comfortable with a bank they have been with for many years and others have a family member who forwards prepaid checks to a family member there are many ways for this to work. Even with your cell phone your calls still go to the same number out of state, many do this. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. 3. Toni, Thank you for replying. I have done everything you suggested. I have not been able to track my Grandmother's parents or Grandparents, as I do not have their names. I know my Grandfather immigrated to Nova Scotia, and my Grand Mother immigrated to Massachusetts. I have not been able to uncover where they were married. I was able to trace my Grandmother's birth to Massachusetts, along with her siblings. I have also been able to track her through the US census until her first marriage. During the first divorce she was granted her maiden name (Williams) however she used both her married name and maiden name at different times. (I have both the marriage records and the divorce records, she lost custody of her 4 children, one of them being my mother whom is still living. I found her second marriage quite by accident, and have also gotten copies of her marriage certificate as well as the divorce proceedings. Nothing is said about changing her name back to her maiden name (Williams, or her first Married name Wright or keeping her second married name, Schoonover.) I have searched everywhere I can think of and have hit a dead end. I have not a clue as to where to look next. any suggestions? My grand-aunt & uncle, both born in NS, were living in Florida in their retirement, after residing most of their married/working life in CT. He died in Florida, and indications were she did as well. Then, her SSDI info made it seem as though she actually died in CT. Several months ago, I tracked down and spoke with both her aged children. Grand-aunt died in Atlanta GA, where son lives. 3. My grandfather and some of his family and friends worked for the RR and there is no listing anywhere in the SSI for them. They retired by the RR retirement fund which they had paid into all throughout the years. I can find them through a RR web site and that is it, it states when he started and retired and that is all one can find on him. Except for the pocket watch they gave him when he retired which didn't thrill him since they had stopped using pocket watches many a year before he retired. He worked for the RR since he was 16 years old. If the person worked for the Railroad in the US, they are included in Social Security and would be included in the SSDI, provided the death was reported to Social Security. From its inception in the US in 1936-37, a special block of numbers in the Social Security system was reserved for Railroad employees. For Railroad workers, the first three digits of the SSN would be in the 700s. This applies until sometime in the 1960s, I believe. It is the US Railroad Retirement Board that administered the Social Security benefits paid to Railroad workers. When you check the SSDI and find that person's name, it will be noted that they were a long-time or retired Railroad employee. You will be able to click on a link and fill out a form to receive a copy of the person's original application for Social Security (for a small fee). If you go to the website for the US Railroad Retirement Board, there is a link to print/fill out a form to receive copies of their employment and retirement records (the fee is $27). It takes about 2 months to receive these records, but the time waiting, and the $27 fee, were well worth it for the information I got recently. It helps if you have the person's SSN, but they can do a search without it if you have the person's birth/death dates. The Railroad Retirement Board's website gives a very clear explanation of whose records you are likely to find, or not to find. I missed the original posting to the list on this topic, so I hope my response above was relevent. Eileen -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. The 700 numbers were originally issued to rail road workers back in the 30s and 40s. They had to be working for the rail road when the number was issued but did not always stay there. They are now using the 700s again and I think that they are now used for some aliens who come to this country but will not be permanent residents. Always!!!! The death is recorded on the system and the information is then posted to the death index. A person could never have worked, had a number for a bank account, for example, and would show up there. That will give you a name, location of death and a date. They up date that a couple times a year for the public even though it is updated daily for the governments purposes. If the individual had no Social Security number and died (almost never these days) and the information was reported to the government, it will not show up on that list as there was no number with which to associate the death. > Basically, it is a function that is used by Social Security to keep track of numbers and which are still in use.
