Hi Ric Thanks much. Another lister was able to find the folks I was looking for on page 48 also (Valentine HARDWICK and wife were said to be on page 49 but weren't) by providing "the names of another couple" that were on page 48 using a rather creative technique. I sent that technique to the lists (a couple of hours ago) so that those who run into this same situation could circumnavigate the system and find the folks they may be looking for on another page rather than on the page they are said to be on. So that was good. But as others have indicated, I guess I'd better report this happening on page 49 (versus page 48) so NSARM can get it corrected. Hi again, Oat Cakes are generally different from Oatmeal cookies, as the cookies require eggs and the Cakes are much more dry as they don't usually contain eggs. They have a more flour-like consistency. The date filling made the Cakes sweeter and softer. My question is slightly off the topic of genealogy, but is family related, I have a recipe called Oatmeal Cake, which my mother got from her mother-in-law. Reading Katherine Barber's new book, "Only in Canada You Say", she describes oatcake as a Nova Scotia term for a large dense oatmeal cookie. I can say that these cookies are different from the oatmeal cookies I can get in Toronto. My grandmother was born in Saint John, NB in 1878 and my grandfather was born in Mill Village, Queens Co, NS in the same year. I've always wondered if my grandmother learned the recipe from her mother-in-law (Helen Atkins, b. 1852 in Queens Co, NS) as well. The recipe is heavy on brown sugar, shortening and molasses, half a cup of each to a cup of oatmeal and one and a half cups of flour. David Reed (dreed@ca.inter.net) Toronto, Ontario, Canada

I'm also having trouble with some records. These records were recorded by the local Magistrate in most rural communities. Could it be that the records are still in some one's attic. I find that some time just using the year the first inital of the last name and all counties will get me a hit Lucille
Friday, January 23, 1931...The Halifax Chgronicle, Halifax, N.S. BODY FOUND IN LIVERPOOL HARBOR AMERICAN FISHERMAN WAS DROWNED DECEMBER 2 LIVERPOOL, Jan 22 - The waters of Liverpool Harbor today gave up the body of Antone Perry, the American fisherman off the Gloucester fishing vessel RHODORA, who was drowned here on December 2. At the time of his death, Perry was boarding his vessel after having been up into the town and fell between two vessels. Searches for his body were unsuccessful at the time. Men along the water front this afternoon saw the body floating down stream and a dory was at once procured and efforts made to pick him up and bring it to shore. Undertaker Edgar J. Wright was immediately called and took charge.
Yes please share the recipe. I too try to add recipes to my genealogy. Thanks
Hi To David's question - usually two oatcakes were put together with a date filling, sandwich style. That recipe is similar to the one I use, however, I did find those oatcakes here in a little town in Alberta made by the local bakery. I do believe they have a Scottish origin. Hi again Thanks to 2 Pamelas for their information. One suggested that I copy my "situation" and send to NSARM. The other got very creative and explained (as below) which I'm sending to the lists in event anyone else has a similar situation: Richard Hardwick (Researching direct lines in Nova Scotia and New England - HARDWICK, ARMSTRONG, BARTEAUX, SPURR, HENDERSON, BLACKMAR, MARSH) RiHardwick@comcast.net ********************* "I had the same problem with another name so I did a search using the year and then only 3 letters of the last name I was looking for and then spot-checked others in the County which were married until I found the right page. It didn't take too long. I already did it for you and if you look up the marriage record of Henrietta Johnston and Henry Stewart Harris, your relatives information is at the bottom of the page." ************************ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard Hardwick" <RiHardwick@comcast.net> To: "NS ednet list" <NSroots@ednet.ns.ca>; "NOVA-SCOTIA" <NOVA-SCOTIA@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 15, 2007 7:52 AM Subject: [nsroots] NS on-line records > Hello all > > I experienced an interesting situation while searching for marriage info > on a > particular HARDWICK relative. > > The typed information (above the actual handwritten records) indicated - > Registration Year 1871 Book 1812 Page 49 Number 84 for Valentine > HARDWICK=Sarah WILSON. > > However, when one observes the actual handwritten information below, Page > 49 > starts off with Number 85, leading one to conclude that Number 84 should > be > on page 48, rather than on page 49. > > Now, how does one navigate to page 48 (from page 49?) Hello all I experienced an interesting situation while searching for marriage info on a particular HARDWICK relative. The typed information (above the actual handwritten records) indicated - Registration Year 1871 Book 1812 Page 49 Number 84 for Valentine HARDWICK=Sarah WILSON. However, when one observes the actual handwritten information below, Page 49 starts off with Number 85, leading one to conclude that Number 84 should be on page 48, rather than on page 49. Now, how does one navigate to page 48 (from page 49?) Can't be done, unless I'm missing something. Other creative "searches" only bring up what I originally was able to bring up. (E.g. Search by years, rather than by surname) Any ideas? Thanks Richard Hardwick (Researching direct lines in Nova Scotia and New England - HARDWICK, ARMSTRONG, BARTEAUX, SPURR, HENDERSON, BLACKMAR, MARSH) RiHardwick@comcast.net

Bob I have had several that I couldn't find but later discovered the person went by another name ie I spent some line looking for Esther and because I knew the name of her husband I went at it from that direction only to find that she was refered to as Hester and sure enough when I went to the death records she was there under that name. I agree. After trying many combinations of letters in case of poor transcriptions/misspellings etc. I an certain that this family member is omitted from the Death Indices: "DOCKRILL, Joseph B. - There passed away suddenly at the Halifax Infirmary, early in the morning of December 19, at the age of 66, Joseph B. Besides his wife, Annie, he is survived by one son, Harold Joseph, and four daughters, Jean, Claire and Margaret at home and May (...) of Truro. The funeral will be held from his late residence at 2 o'clock Friday, December 21, with Rev. J.D. MacLeod officiating. Internment will be in St. John's Cemetery." and "According to the cemetery office records of St. John's Cemetery, Windsor Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, Joseph Dockrill was interred in Section A, Row 29, Lot 120-121 (family lot). Cemetery records list the date of death as December 21, 1945 (aged 66 years). The site is marked with a headstone." plus I have visited the resting site. I know that my information thus far is correct and I have tried both 1945 and 1946 (because of the holiday season that could have intervened).
