    3. Hi, while looking for the source, I answered my own question.. don't know why I missed it before.. it's in Newport Township in the Hants County Deeds Book. Still, does anyone know where this inn and tavern was located in today's terms? On 15 April 1833, James A. Fitzmaurice, Windsor Road, purchased for 500 pounds from John Albro, Esq., Halifax, 200 acres of farm, including a farm, messuage, and a tavern on the north side of the road leading from Halifax to Windsor, part of Lot #64, Letter B, 406, Newport Township [Hants Co deeds, Book 21, p. 406]. On 16 April 1833 (reg’d 25 Feb 1834), James A. and Charlotte Fitzmaurice obtained a mortgage from John Albro for 500 pounds, interest to be 30 pounds annually, the total to be paid by 1845 [Book 22, p. 81]. This was located at the junction of the Windsor Road and Newport Road, where he operated an inn and a tavern. On 1 Oct 1839, they sold this property back to John Albro for 10 pounds [Book 25, p. 298]. > What is the source of this inforamtion?> > Post answer to the NS list.> > bob gillis> V Bergmann wrote:> > Hello, if a piece of property was located at the juction of Windsor> > Road and Newport Road in 1838, which county would it be in and where> > exactly is that today?Virginia (Ward) Bergmann Researching Hants County surnames: WARD, MOSHER, CALDWELL, LOWTHERS, BERRY

    1. Re: [NS-L] Witnesses who signed the 'marriage bond'
    2. Bob Hegerich
    3. Hi All: Somebody please correct me if I am wrong. The signatories of the bond were simply stating that, if it should later be proven that there existed an impediment to the marriage, they would forfeit the sum stipulated in the bond. It didn't matter who came up with how much as long as it totalled the stipulated amount. The witnesses were simple perfunctory adjuncts whose only task was to state that two persons claiming to be whoever they claimed to be did, in fact, sign the bond in their presence. They would not necessarily have had to know, or even have heard of, any of the signatories prior to the signing of the bond. -----Bob H----- ----- Original Message ----- From: "bob gillis" <robertgillis@verizon.net> Cc: <nova-scotia-l@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 30, 2007 5:30 PM Subject: Re: [NS-L] Witnesses who signed the 'marriage bond' > David Reed wrote: >> Witnesses could be anyone who was present when the bond was >> created. 3. It is my understanding that when someone signed a marriage bond, that someone was guaranteeing that there was no impediment to the marriage.
