    3. Hi All: I think I may have found her, and the method used was one I didn't list below--Brute Force. I just finished going through the 226 people in my database whose maiden name was SLAUENWHITE (or some minor variation thereof), and who how carried the given name of Ann. Lo and behold, Ann SLAUNWHITE, b. Apr 1905 at Terence Bay, d/o Arthur and Evelyn (HOWARD) SLAUNWHITE is Mrs. William SMITH of Halifax when her father dies in 1956, but is deceased when her sister dies in 1962. Now that's not proof, but it just might be progress. :-) ------Bob H----- ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bob Hegerich" <bobh36@cox.net> To: <jedh@jedh.com>; <nova-scotia-l@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, June 08, 2007 12:03 PM Subject: Re: [NS-L] William Francis SMITH of Bald Rock > Hi Jared: > > William Francis SMITH m. 3. Hi Jared: William Francis SMITH m. Anna Archibald PATTEN on 18 Sep 1901 and she dies (as Mrs. SMITH) on 07 Jul 1940. So William Francis apparently married "Annie SLAUENWHITE" after 1940, when he was 70+ yrs of age. Unfortunately, there are a far larger number than three "Annie" SLAUENWHITE's living in the Halifax area at almost any time after about 1880 or so. :-) My suspicion is that this nut can be cracked only by one or more of the following: a. Somebody knows the family b. A church marriage record is found (unless somebody can sneak a peek at post-1930 civil marriages) c. A burial inscription or cemetery record for Annie (probably at Camp Hill Cemetery, if I had to guess) is found; if we had her date of DOB, it might help. This assumes that she could be ID'd as the right Annie which is problematic in itself d. An obit/death notice for Annie is found (so far, no luck). e. A funeral home record for Annie is found which gives her parents names. f. Just plain old dumb luck. :-) -----Bob H----- ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jared Handspicker" <jedh@jedh.com> To: <nova-scotia-l@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, June 08, 2007 10:54 AM Subject: Re: [NS-L] William Francis SMITH of Bald Rock > Another thought on this... > > Based on William Francis Smith being listed as single and living with his > parents in Sambro in 1901, one would presume he married AFTER 1901. 1. Re: [NS-L] William Francis SMITH of Bald Rock
    2. Jared Handspicker
    3. Another thought on this... Based on William Francis Smith being listed as single and living with his parents in Sambro in 1901, one would presume he married AFTER 1901. Was anyone able to find him in 1911 Census records? Would be important to note whether or not he was STILL single in 1911. If he's found, and listed married to an Anne/Annie/Ann/Anna, then that might help determine a rough date on the marriage. If he's still single, then his marriage would have taken place AFTER 1911. There are at least three Annie(etc) Slauenwhites born between 1873 and 1875 in Halifax County, any of which could be the one who married William. I'd not COUNT on her having married a Slauenwhite first, as it is QUITE rare for a widow to list a MARRIED name in these sorts of records. Not impossible, but rare. One would also have to venture a guess that she died after 1957, as there is no "matching" record of death in the NS VR database of an Annie(etc) Smith dying between 1954 and 1957. However, she could also have remarried after William's death, so that MAY be a moot point. Has anyone successfully tracked William in 1911? 3. Adding one more ingredient into the mix; the Ann Archibald (Patten) Smith found below actually died in July 1940 - still married to William F Smith and living at the Queen St. address in Halifax where Bob's WF Smith died. So there is a period of 14 years between this first wife's death and Wm. Francis's death in 1954 during which he presumably married again, to the mysterious Annie Slaunwhite. The surname of Charles Kehoe's wife Catherine was recorded in the NS marriages register as HOBIN, not Tobin. My apologies to any Tobin researchers on the list. William Francis SMITH is b. 16 Oct 1871 [NS Births, 1871, book 1810, page 123, #1029] at Bald Rock, s/o Henry and Ann Elizabeth (GRAY) SMITH, who m. 29 Jan 1870 [ibid]. However, at this point, I haven't even the foggiest notion who she might be. Either my brain has temporarily ceased functioning, or she is someone I haven't seen before. Either way, if anyone has a clue as to her identity, I would really like to hear from you. -----Bob H-----
