    3. Hi Jill, I have the 1951 directory for Pictou County towns. It includes no rural areas, only the five towns of Pictou County: New Glasgow, Stellarton, Pictou town, Westville and Trenton. (BTW, the last syllable of Pictou is pronounced "toe", the same as that big thing on the end of your foot.) Four Armstrongs appear in New Glasgow, and here they are: Surname, Given name, employer, home address Armstrong Angus, emp, Mattress Factory, 255 Glasgow Armstrong Harold, (Mary), Salsm Wods, 240 Forbes Armstrong Hazel, Teacher, 314 Washington Armstrong Howard, (Ella), emp NS Steel, 314 Washington One Armstrong is in Pictou town: Armstrong Joseph (Mrs), Carpenter, Elm My guess is that you could find information from the Justice Building in Pictou if you can get someone to go in there and look through estate papers and land transactions for you. I would but I live in Toronto, about 1,600 km. away. Good luck with your search! Rick MacNeil

    3. To all:- Transcribers have been working hard -- but the percentages do not seem to increase as fast as we would wish - especially in British Columbia. It is possible that Martha found out early that her marriage was bigamist and not valid and left Eric/Brehnin and returned to Picton ON where she had been born and perhaps her parents and relatives still lived. So they had no progeny. when did Eric's daughter go to Canada? You can look up Armstrongs in Canada 411 and write the 231 that live in NS and inquire if they are the descendants. Also ask on the Pictou Message Board if anyone knows of descendants. You can also look up the name of the newspaper in Sellarton or new Glasgow and write a letter asking about descendants. Jill is Brehnin as given on the marriage record the Welsh for Eric? Or did he give a false name at the marriage. bob gillis > > As it was a neighbour who was the informant of Eric's death I'm assuming > that he had no family in the vicinity, at the time of his death. Thank you to everyone else who replied to my original message. My next question to ask is whether it's possible to find living descendants of Eric Armstrong and Martha Stevens, considering that you cannot look-up birth information until 100 years have passed. As it was a neighbour who was the informant of Eric's death I'm assuming that he had no family in the vicinity, at the time of his death. I'm waiting to hear from the Herald (as per Shirley's suggestion) whether there was an obituary, which might gives some clues of living relatives. ****snipped**** Jill, Other than the info from Nova Scotia stating Eric's parents, do you have any further info regarding his parents' names? Mother's m/s perhaps? There are a couple of John ARMSTRONGs who are seamen, on the 1891 & 1901 census. One or two I ruled out due to ages (19y etc), but so very hard to say exactly which may be Eric's. There is a Ruth ARMSTRONG living in Wales in both census, as well. Wonder if she is his Mum? She isn't living near Eric though. If I recall she is further north, nearer Caernarfon (Canarvon). Would you like that info? If so, I can send it tomorrow, although you would not see it until very late and/or Saturday morn. Might also be worthwhile going to the library (if you are able), to look at a more detailed map of Worcestershire to look for Farnhill. As mentioned in a previous message, I did find a Fernhill Heath, but as you no doubt know, there could quite possibly be a Farnhill nearby or somewhere just south of Worcester. Cheerio the now ~ Toni

Bob, Skipton is in North Riding Yorkshire (NRY). There is a Farnhill in NRY, not far from Keighley. The Farnhill in which we found Eric L. ARMSTRONG was in fact in Worcestershire. The 1901 census says Worcerstershire, as does the 1891 census. 2. John Cordes
    3. Bill, I can tell you of my recent experience - hope it may be of some help. Family lore was that my grandmother returned to Nova Scotia from England, with her two children, in April 1919. This was as soon as she was able to get passage after the war ended. I also knew that they had arrived in Saint John and travelled overland to Halifax. Some time ago I requested an inter-archive loan of film from Ottawa of the Canadian passenger lists for the relevant period. Here's a link for how you can get started, if you want to try this. http://www.collectionscanada.ca/genealogy/022-908.003-e.html The film was very difficult to read and despite putting a lot of effort into it I was unsuccessful in my search. I didn't expect to really learn anything particularly significant; I was just curious to find the name of the ship, and the precise date of arrival, things I didn't ever remember hearing from my mother. Then a few months ago the "findmypast" site updated their (indexed) passenger lists, recorded from the British side, to include the decade I needed (I think they are still just up to 1919, but should get the next decade soon). I searched their site (this part is free): http://www.findmypast.com/Migration.jsp and found what seemed to be my family. I then paid to view the images I wanted (I think I paid about 7 pounds) and indeed everything checked out. I learned that the ship was the Melita, but it had sailed from Liverpool 21 Feb 1919, earlier than I had expected. This suggested to me that I get the next earlier period of film from Ottawa, which is actually here on loan for me right now. The very last ship on this earlier film is the Melita, arriving Saint John on 6 March 1919. So I had been off by about a month, explaining why I couldn't find my family the first time. Sorry to be so long-winded about this.
