    1. [NS-L] John Hazel of Cumberland, NS 1785
    2. DR
    3. Can anyone help me find the origins of this John Hazel who settled in NS first in 1785: Thanks in advance for any clues: Dorothy Rafuse Dartmouth, NS _____ Trying to trace John Hazel who first appeared in Cumberland in Nova Scotia in 1785 amongst a group of men being given a land grant. He could have been attached to the British Military possibly at Fort Lawrence. It is felt it he was born in the United States and possibly left after the American Revolution, probably a Loyalist moving to Canada. He or perhaps another John Hazel was married to Priscilla Spicer In Cumberland County, NS in 1805, daughter of Robert & Priscilla Spicer (Chomondelay). A John Hazel received a Crown Grant (about 1816) in Port Greville, (Parrsborough) Cumberland County, NS Canada. He may have had a brother Joshua (pronounced Joshu-way). He may have had a brother, Robert H. Hazel. There is also a record of a George Hassell who married Rebecca Card after her husband Richard died. George and Rebecca were married in Newport/Westerley, Rhode Island before 1692. Could John Hazel be a descendant of George and Rebecca ? ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to LUNEN-LINKS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    1. [NS-L] MacGregorTheVariousRev. DanielMcGregors Re: McGREGOR Pictou Co
    2. Jack Simon
    3. Hi, All, I guess, Bill White, that you don't mean Rev. Daniel MacGregor, one of the younger sons of my great-grandfather, Baptist Deacon Donald MacGregor of South River Lake, Antigonish Co., Nova Scotia. This Rev. Daniel MacGregor, later of Indianapolis, Indiana, was my great-uncle, and uncle of my dad, the late Dr. Judson Stewart MacGregor, latter born in New Glasgow, Pictou Co., NS. This great-uncle of mine, Rev. Daniel MacGregor, was born in South River Lake just a few years after 1853 when my paternal grandfather, Baptist Rev. Peter Stewart MacGregor was born in South River Lake to Baptist Deacon Donald McGregor (later spelled MacGregor) and the latter's wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" Stewart. The latter couple were both born in Perthshire, Scotland, around Loch Rannoch, but they were married in East Point, Kings Co., PEI around 1838 or 1839. The Deacon was born in 1806 in Perthshire, Scotland, according to his 1892 obituary. My ggf Baptist Deacon Donald McGregor came to Nova Scotia in 1832, as a single man. He had become a Baptist in Scotland at age 16, but his parents, Hugh Donald McGregor, also called Donald Ruadh McGregor, and the latter's wife, nee Margaret McGregor, were Presbyterians, or Church of Scotland, and they never became Baptists. I believe that Baptist Deacon Donald McGregor, or else his father, Donald Ruadh McGregor, stayed with "relatives" in Merigomish, Pictou Co., Nova Scotia, when they arrived probably in Pictou, Pictou Co., NS, according to Father Rankin's history of Nova Scotia. My belief is that this arrival in Nova Scotia was before the 1806 birth of Baptist Deacon Donald McGregor in Perthshire, because the Springfield, Antigonish Co., NS McGregor relatives (cousins) already living in NS in 1832 called my Great-Grandfather, Baptist Deacon Donald McGregor, "New Donald". Therefore, it makes sense that Donald Ruadh McGregor, my great-great grandfather and his wife nee Margaret McGregor gave birth to my ggf, Baptist Deacon Donald McGregor back in Scotland in 1806 because they had returned from Nova Scotia back to Scotland. I believe that it was Donald Ruadh McGregor's wife that "was disturbed", so they went back to Scotland. Obviously, Donald Ruadh's wife didn't like Nova Scotia, she was homesick, or else she was depressed, so they returned to Scotland. She had to have returned to Scotland, in order to give birth to my ggf, Baptist Deacon Donald McGregor, there, in Scotland. Since there were 2 Donalds, father and son, I refer to the older generation Donald as Donald Ruadh or Hugh Donald McGregor, and to the younger generation Donald as Baptist Deacon Donald McGregor, to distinguish one from the other! To clarify, this is how the generations went: Donald Ruadh McGregor and wife, nee Margaret McGregor. She was related to the Springfield, Antigonish Co., NS McGregors. Their son was: Baptist Deacon Donald McGregor and wife nee Elizabeth Stewart, dau. of John Stewart (Sr. one) of Red Point, PEI & of Scotland. Their son: Rev. Peter Stewart MacGregor and wife, nee Elizabeth "Bessie" Maria Hatfield, dau. of Jacob Hatfield IV of Tusket, Yarmouth Co., NS. Their son: Dr. Judson Stewart MacGregor and his wife, Gladys Burton Allen, dau. of Baptist Rev. Charles Wesley Allen, latter born also in NS. Their dau: Myself, Rosamond Jean MacGregor (Mrs. Jack Edward Simon), born in Cambridge, Mass. My great-uncle, a Baptist minister named Rev. Daniel MacGregor, of Indianapolis, Indiana, but born in South River Lake NS, was another brother of my paternal grandfather, the above Rev. Peter Stewart McGregor, also born in South River Lake. Both these 2 brothers became Baptist ministers. My gf, Rev. Peter Stewart MacGregor (his wife called him Stewart but his family called him Peter) stayed in Nova Scotia, but Rev. Daniel McGregor became a Baptist minister in Indianapolis, Indiana. If this helps you, Bill White, that's good. If not, I'd love to hear from any cousins or friends of the family who have anything else to add to my genealogical tale above! 3. Parts of the 1891 Census were either damaged or destroyed some time in the early 1920 I believe.

    3. Paula, I'm not aware of Ancestry having any Canadian 1891 Census transcriptions - not in Nova Scotia, anyway. As far as I know your best bet would be to check the following site: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/nscensus.html#HALIFAX There are several regions of Halifax County covered, for a number of different years -- you may strike it lucky! There are also a few other census transcriptions which do not appear in the above collection. I have no magic advice for finding them. One example is my own transcription of the Smiths Cove, Halifax County 1891 census, available at http://cordes.ca/genealogy/ The nice census collection in the first link (the 'downhome' site) does not seem to be getting updated, unfortunately. Good luck, John Cordes On [2007-06-16 at 06:20pm] Paula Jones <pjj100@telus.net> wrote: > I wonder if someone who has Ancestory could please do me a > favour and do a 1891 Halifax Census Record check for me: > Eli and/or Susan Emino

The 1890 US Census was destroyed before it could be filmed. The 1891 Census for Halifax County is found on FHL film 1465739 and 14657340. bob gillis > The www.familysearch.org has the 1881 Canadian Census, Ancestry has the 1901 > & 1911 Census. the 1901, 1906 and 1911 Census can be found on http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/index.html. bob gillis

    3. Hi, Ancestry doesn't have the 1891 census. I think it was destroyed. Nancy The www.familysearch.org has the 1881 Canadian Census, Ancestry has the 1901 & 1911 Census. 1. Re: [NS-L] ARMSTRONG - Stellarton, Pictou - 1912-1951
    2. Hello Everyone I've just spent a couple of days with my mother telling her all about her grandfather Eric Armstrong. We're both fascinated with all of the new information, which is mainly down to all of the help that everyone on this list has given me. Thank you to Rick for the Armstrongs from the 1951 directory for Pictou. They could very well be related to Eric. The Herald have confirmed that there is an obituary for Eric and it is in the post. (As suggested by Shirley) Thanks also to Bob and Toni who have helped with the location of Fernall (Fernhill). On Eric's marriage certificate to his first wife Lydia he stated that his father was John Armstrong a seaman and deceased. In 1869 there is a marriage for John Armstrong and Ruth Hunt in Cardiff and John and Ruth are still living in Cardiff in 1871. After 1871 I can't find any trace of John and Ruth. As I've been unable to find a birth certificate for Eric (or Brenhin/Brenhyn) I can't confirm whether they are his parents or not. The word Brenhyn is Welsh for King or Prince. Thanks also for the suggestion to check 411 for living Armstrongs and dropping them a line. Eric's youngest Amy was sent to Canada in November 1912 eight months after Eric. He was living in Minto NB at that time. All of the UK documentation that I have for Eric ie the 1901 census, his marriage certificate, certificates of birth for two of his three daughters, the death certificate for one of his daughters, the 1911 Electoral Register and his emigration record (the Ship's Manifest) he has always been Eric sometimes with an L and several times with Lionel. He may have changed his name to Brenhyn Llewellyn Armstrong to make it more difficult for him to be found. My grandmother Ella tried to find him after Lydia died through the Salvation Army to no avail. I really appreciate everyones help and suggestions. Thank you so much.
