Good Day! I just want to get early word out about the "Gathering" in July of 2008. (cross-posted to NS, NB, and Digby Mailing lists) First, the main event is the "Gathering of Loyalist Descendants - 225th Anniversary of the arrival in 1783" (or something to that effect). There is surely a kick-off on 10 July 2008, where I'm currently engaged to speak for a dinner at The Pines in Digby, NS. I'm relatively certain that the main event(s) will be the following Friday & Saturday, with probably some on Sunday, and maybe a few during the prior week, as well. Part of the reason for this e-mail is to seek someone more local to the Digby area who would be willing to help coordinate the logistics side of planning this sort of family reunion. Preferably, someone at least in Nova Scotia, and better yet in Digby County! :-) My THINKING is to have this reunion include not only HANDSPIKER descendents, who surely have Digby ties, but include those with HANSELPACKER lines as well, as they are all one and the same descendants of Loyalist brothers! Once I've finalized a few more details, I'll start putting up a webpage to keep folks up-to-date on any schedule of events, and suggestions for lodging, travel, etc. I will also have a link to information about the book I'll be writing about the family history, which will be made available only through the Admiral Digby Museum (ADM) in Digby. As I've always maintained, my love of genealogy and history is my reason for doing all this work, so I will maintain my not-for-profit mentality. However, the ADM and the staff there have provided so much help over the years, and need additional funds to continue this great service, so they will have the publishing rights to whatever I manage to pull together by Spring of 2008. SO!!! If you're interested in attending a grand Family Reunion next summer, or have been waiting for a published work on the Handspiker/Hanselpacker family, or BOTH... please "stay tuned" and I hope to have more information to provide in the future. MOST importantly, if you, or someone you know would be willing to pick up the gauntlet, and act as the local Reunion Coordinator for logistics in Digby, PLEASE contact me with an "I'd love to" or "I know someone who would be thrilled to" e-mail! :-) Cheers! ------------------------ Jared "Jed" Handspicker jedh@jedh.com

Hi All, Does anyone live near the area of North River? I am trying to locate a Jean MacLean (Husband George). Tried mailing a letter, but it came back as an incorrect address. Is North River in Annapolis, or somewhere else? Thanks! SueB

He was a station agent for 51 years, for some time at Elmsdale and Stewiacke. I am especially interested in obtaining a photo of him to accompany an article I have written. Hello all Luella Marshall and her husband Bob took some time out this afternoon to investigate the streets of Digby to see if this mysterious stream exists today. The following is a quote she just sent to me: "Bob and I went to Digby this afternoon and this is what we found. Starting at 78-80 Mount Street there is a small swampy area or pond so that could have been the start of a small creek etc. and as this is the highest place it is where the water would have had to flowed from and down hill to the Joggins. We then drove to the various streets and along the way there was several indents that could have had water flowage in the past but no such creek, brook river exists today. Even with all the rain of this year the only wet spot was in the small swampy area on Mount Street. Luella" *********************************** The spot that Luella describes as being the swampy area today (at Mount Street) also looks like the place where the stream started in the 1871 map as well. I guess I'd better pursue getting in some land records (microfilms from FHC) to see if the G. ARMSTRONG property in 1871 (that appears to contain a river/stream/brook) was "described" as having a stream/river on it, and maybe if we get lucky, a name. *************************** I would publicly like to thank Luella and her husband Bob from taking time out from what is a busy schedule to help on this project. Luella is a great asset to the genealogical community. I would also like to thank all the folks that had their input on this subject. Jared Handspiker was a big help in getting me organized. Thanks to those who provided various maps of the area and many interesting suggestions. Interesting outcome. Go to http://www.jedh.com/images/mystery_stream3.jpg The waterway that is most eastern is the "mystery stream." The one that runs between King Street and Queen Street. This stream has the same bearings as the stream in the 1881 AF Church map. Go to http://twelch.htohananet.com:80/DigbyTown.htm to see a portion of the 1881 AF Church map. This is the stream that was on my ARMSTRONG relatives' property back in 1881. It is very uncanny how the 2 rivers/brooks/streams match up almost identically. ************************ Now, from what I understand, that water way doesn't exist today in the south part of town of Digby? But if there is no waterway at that end of town today, I'm wondering why it shows up on a modern day map? Hi Heather, I've been doing some research for 12+ years, and more for 6 years on-line. And, I believe in finding out about the "why's and how's" of my ancestors. In my KIDDER family-tree, I found out that all of the major, life-threatening diseases were present. And, they came down to my father ! He ended up with several, and his younger half-brother literally "dropped dead" at Age 60. An autopsy showed he had undiagnosed heart disease, lung disease, and cancer. And, my father had a double-whammy, his grandparents on the other side both died of cancer within a year of each other - both in their early 60's. (They were my LEWIS / CORKILL "home children" arriving in Halifax in the 1870's.) I have no way of knowing what their parents died of. The LEWIS couple both died young, leaving an orphan; the CORKILL mother died young, but the father lived a long life. And, my mother had heart disease, Strokes, and miscellaneous health problems coming down to her ! But, coming down to my generation, most of my cousins only have "auto-immune diseases." I only know of one cousin have a Cancer scare. But, another cousin "died in his sleep" at Age 65 .. probably of a heart attack (just like his father did). And, I chatted on-line with a lady a few years ago, and she, a Nurse, said that we do not inherit "diseases" (dis -- ease) from our ancestors; we inherit their: weak immune systerms. After learning about my ancestors' lives - 1600's through 1900's, I can believe that they had "weak immune systerms" - either inherited - or brought on by their "life-styles." Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) P.S. At Age 50, I had a strange rash appear on my arms and legs. It took me several doctors to find out what the rash was; one doctor asked me if I had traveled in the jungles of Africa ! It turned out I had Psoriasis, and this doctor told me I had inherited it from a grandparent. I couldn't remember any grandparent having skin problems. The next day I remembered my -- great-grandmother ! "Grandma KIDDER" had a farmhouse in the 1940's and 1950's and we lived with her for 7 years. I have memories of her sitting in her rocking chair with her arms and legs so bad that you couldn't see her skin. She died in the 1960's never knowing what she had ! P.S.2 I have a very long story about my orphaned grandmother. But, I'll only mention one part of it. She was reportedly a foundling in Boston and was adopted at Age 3 by an older couple. My research and my mother's and grandmother's stories have led me to believe that the older couple was her grandparents. Their only daughter, married with a son in Connecticut, was the birth-mother (with the husband not the birth-father). I mention this because the Adoptive mother died of Pernicious Anemia in 1899, 7 years after adopting the girl. My grandmother grew up (10 years in orphanages), married, had a son, then a daughter. The daughter was born with -- Pernicious Anemia. (That first son was well over 6' tall; his next sister was under 5' tall. Their youngest sibling was born 20 years later, and, when they walked down the street together, it was an unusal sight !) (I could tell many stories ! One gr-grandfather died suddenly at the supper table. I know of a lady in my town who was sitting with her family at "Sunday dinner" and her husband "shoked to death" - at the table ! That's something I've never seen discussed on the Lists - as a cause of death. Actually, his granddaughter almost "chocked to death" but was rescued (before the Heimlick).) New List created on Feb. 1: CAN-USA-MIGRATION For Genealogy researchers, please remember to check the archives of the Lists & Boards for both your surnames and place-names.

Hi List: I just sat down with my Saturday morning Toronto Star newspaper: In the bottom left hand corner was the beginning of a story about a Family in Toronto who's family tree goes back to NB. Being from NB it caught my eye, specially since the headline reads "A Deadly Family tree". I urge everyone to read this article. The family has had DNA testing after it was discovered they carry a deadly gene that causes cancer. I applaud Mr Hovey of Toronto who took it upon himself to try and find long lost family members in NB to make them aware of this gene. I also applaud the Genetic Doctors/counsellors who went from Toronto to Fredericton to do the testing in April and then deliver the devestating results in some cases this week! The article can be found on line at: http://www.thestar.com/News/article/235884 http://www3.thestar.com/static/PDF/070714_cancer.pdf The front page of the paper is http://www.thestar.ca For those of you with access to the actual paper see page 1 and continued on pages 24-25 of Section 1. To all:- A mixture of vacations, plus very hard to read writing by the enumerators has slowed us down -- but there are many pages in British Columbia. One or two pages daily would help - I have HOW TO memos for anyone wishing to try his/her transcribing at http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/ Also the QUESTIONS near Sign-In have much information. Percentages:- ALBERTA...............................98.11% BRITISH COLUMBIA.............89.28% CAN-SASKATCHEWAN........99.31% [You can see British Columbia needs a few more pages done] Personally, I jope the three provinces will be 100% by Aug. 6, Civic Holiday in many places. Also, I leave for Nova Scotia on Aug. 8 until Aug 21 -- the only bits I want to do DownHome are corrections! One new transcriber is assisting Judy van der Veen in Prince Albert - as mentioned, addresses are added, NO surname or given name due to INK-- to date Garth Ulrich has connected about 75% of the families from the 1910 city directory, etc. IF ANYONE WORKS ON THOSE PAGES in Print Albert - DO NOT CLAIM as Judy, Garth and Jessie have their own system. We could have two provinces 100% next Friday - remember B.C. Thanks to all, including the original Visine Group! Muriel M. Davidson Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Brampton, ON

My great-great grandmother was Margaret Ann Pineo (born Abt 1823 in Nova Scotia, possibly Medford; died in Apple River on 9 May 1892) married to Charles Vincent Green (Abt 1918-Bef 9 May 1892). Their daughter Ada May Green married Havelock H. Mosher — they settled in Apple River and had 11 children. I'm searching for Margaret Pineo's parents, etc. In the meantime, I found a very interesting personal sketch on Peter Pineo. ********************* We were soon overtaken by Mr. Peter Pineo, who invited us to his habitation, eighteen miles distant from Annapolis, where we all arrived in good spirits, though not a little fatigued with our journey, for we had travelled, with all our baggage, fifty-four miles in two days. We found Mr. Pineo very friendly and obliging, and however he may be esteemed vain, conceited and self-important, yet these shades in his character are without any mixtures of ill nature, insolence, or severity, but rather tinctured with benevolence; and his disposition to exalt himself is distinguished by acts of generosity and the most hospitable exertions. The next morning we dismissed our carriages and parted with the remainder of our Cornwallis friends, determining to respose a little till some means of futher conveyance should offer. Mr. Pineo sent an invitation to Mr. Morse, the dissenting teacher of Granville, who attended with his lady at dinner, and at the same time Mr. Formality [explained earlier in the book] made his appearance with a request to accompany him about five miles to his dwelling. After a serious consultation it was agreed that I should officiate the next Sunday at the meeting-house, and upon other occasions when I found myself disposed to perform service at Granville.
