Hello, Just a quick note that we found one of my father's cousins in a similar way. My sister likes to visit cemeteries, and especially the site where our parents are buried. A couple of years ago she kept noticing that someone else was leaving flowers beside the stone. She got very curious and decided to leave a note on the stone. A few days later she got a phone call. It was a cousin of our father. We already knew that this gravesite initially belonged to our great-grandmother, Mrs. Mary (CORKILL) LEWIS * and that one of her daughters was also buried there. It turned out that the lady who called was that daughters' daughter ! And, it turned out she only lived a few miles from me. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) P.S. As I've mentioned before, "Stanley" LEWIS and Mary CORKILL were "British Home Children" who arrived in Halifax ~1874. They married in Truro in 1879, and migrated to Boston, MA, in 1881. They settled in Stoneham, MA, and had 13 children ! Unfortunately for their descendants, this was not the closest of families, and I only have a little information on the spouses of the children and even less about their children. However, I have found 2 "distant cousins" on-line. -- I sure wish more "cousins" would visit that gravesite in Stoneham, MA -- and leave some "family history" for me ! :o) New List created on Feb. 1: CAN-USA-MIGRATION For Genealogy researchers, please remember to check the archives of the Lists & Boards for both your surnames and place-names.
I would not call this gentleman "mad" but very caring, yet wants to be unknown. I wish someone would write bits of history and leave on the graves of some of the Conrad and Rhodenizer ancestors. Apparently he strolls around a cemetery, selects a headstone, then does some research on the person's family history. He types up the info, places it in a ziploc bag and leaves the bag at the stone for a family member to find. I think it is very interesting. Pat, here is a source for the records of the Infectious Disease Hospital. It's a fairly new Archives and they are gradually gathering some great records of value to genealogical researchers. If you contact them by email them they will respond and do their best to provide what you are looking for. http://www.halifax.ca/archives/CityofHalifaxGenealogicalSources.html Iris
Hi Pat: The Morris Street Hospital in Halifax was the Infectious Disaease Hospital and the choice for those suffering from TB in the 1920s. Morris Street, while it still exists, is shorter than it was in the 1920s. That section where the hospital was located is now University Avenue. The hospital was next to the Fire Station which is on the corner of Robie and Univdrsity Avenue. The IWK has taken over the site of the Infectious Disease Hospital. As for the records, I have not seen any sign of them, but would love to know if they have been made public. Iris Pat Watson wrote: >Questions: >1. Questions: 1. Can someone tell me what kind of hospital this was? 2. Where it was located? Did it have anything to do with TB patients? 3. Is there any web sites to retrive info on this hospital and a list of the patients in 1925 Thanks Pat ")

Hi Barbara, There are two Card Cemetery listings in Hants County, although they may in fact be the same one. The first is shown as being at Red Bank Road, Centre Burlington. The second is (was) near the river bank in a farmer's field. Many years ago the stones were gathered up and thrown into the river. Guess the farmer at the time needed that few hundred square feet of land. We are doing better at these things today. Let me know when you are coming to NS and I will be pleased to guide you through some of the Card and Burgess records at the West Hants Historical Society. I can also direct you to the Card Family Cemetery. Cheers, John John D. Hello All, After 4 years of family research, I am finally planning to visit Nova Scotia in September. In my ancestry of the Card and Burgess families, I keep running into reference to the Card Family Cemetery. Does anyone have an idea where this might be located? Most of my ancestors are from the Summerville, Hantsport, and Hants County areas. Thank you for any help you can provide. Sincerely, Barbara Gosse
Thank you Richard. I have information on Edward's siblings, but he is a mystery. ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
Just to add to your information. On the name Card you should try the Scotch Village Cemetery, there were a number of Cards from there; "Richard Card". I know that there is a large number of Burgess's from Hants County, Newport, St Croix, Three Mile Plain. Hello Barbara -- Be very certain which SUMMERVILLE you wish to visit, as there used to be 8 [eight]. I was born in one of them, but the 1897 postmaster had it changed to Summerville Centre, west of Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Re BURGESS -- I believe I grew up knowing that name, they mainly lived in Central and South-West Port Mouton, west of Summerville Centre. Friday, March 17, 1933...The Halifax Chronicle, Halifax, N.S. BURY VICTIM OF SEA TRAGEDY AT THE HAWK Body Rests Within Sound Of Breakers That Brought Death Villagers Turn Out To Honor Memory of PATRICK PITMAN Who Met Death In Raging Surf YARMOUTH, March 18 - Victim of the surf of Might Bay, at The Hawk, Cape Sable Island, which overwhelmed him after his frail fishermen's dory has defied the wind and waves in a 75-mile battle to land, PATRICK PITMAN, 30, member of the crew of the Gloucester trawler Raymonde, and a native of Norristown, Newfoundland, was laid to rest Wednesday in Evergreen cemetery, within sound of the very breakers which had caused his death. Borne from Atlantic Hall by villagers of The Hawk, who like himself wrest their livelihood from the sea, the body of the young man was committed to burial by Licentiate Max Smeltzer, of the small village on the shore. Evergreen cemetery, located far out on the shoreline, stands within the sound of the booming surf which all day long sings a Requiem to those who have passed. Thus was the final chapter written in the life of the Newfoundland seaman who, coming of seafaring stock, moved early to Gloucester and who, although but 30 years of age, established a most favorable reputation as a fisherman of ability and courage. A peculiar circumstances of the tragedy was revealed today when dispatches from Gloucester told that the fatal voyage which brought Pitman to his death, amid the snarling surf of this rock-bound Nova Scotia coast was the first voyage which he had made on the Raymonde. He had only lately joined this craft.
Hi Kathleen and all All I have is that Edward was born "about 1858" to Joseph WALLEY and Sarah Elizabeth BARTEAUX (1833-1900.) Mother Sarah born Hants County in 1833. Parents married 1850 in Cumberland County. Edward had 4 siblings. You appear to have closer birth date and place. Sorry, this is all I have.
