Eastern Chronicle, New Glasgow, NS,Thursday, 08 Oct 1942: New Glasgow Men Win Promotion The press services of yesterday carried the announcement from National Defence Headquarters telling of the promotion of two officers in the Canadian Army who are well known to New Glasgow people. Four Canadians serving overseas have been promoted from Lieutenant to Captain because of their good work. In the List is Lieut. Sydney M. Smith, of New Glasgow. Captain Smith, as he now is, belonged to the Canadian Armored Corps. He is a young New Glasgow man of a particularly fine type and his many friends in the home town will be delighted to learn of his deserved promotion. Another promotion of local interest is that of Major John Portas, to the rank of Lieut. Colonel. He has been made Assistant Director of Ordinance Services of an Armored Division in Canada. Colonel Portas was an officer in the Great War in a British Regiment. While residing in New Glasgow he was engineer with the Maritime Steel and Foundries Ltd. He was overseas in 1941 as Major in command of the 1st Army Tank Brigade Ordance Workshop, and returned to Canada about a year ago as Senior Ordance Mechanical Engineer with the Armored Division. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Airman Missing Digby, Oct 6.- Sergeant Max Feindel Robbins, reported missing overseas while serving with the R.C.A.F., is a son of Mr. and Mrs.Wilfred Robbins, Roseway, which is on Digby Neck. His wife, and their son, who is a little over a year old, reside at Waterford. She is the former Hazel Lewis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Watson Lewis, Roseway. Sergeant Robbins, who is about 30 years old, has a sister, Mrs. Wayne Comeau, living at Roseway, and a brother, Gerald, in Boston. After training in the West, the airman went overseas about a year ago. Sergeant Robbins is a nephew of Dr. W.H. Robbins, of Abercrombie Road. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Pictou County Proud of Her Sons The British Empire's outstanding award for naval education, the King's Gold Medal, has been awarded to Midshipman William Alexander Scott Murray, R.N., son of Rear-Admiral L.W. Murray of Halifax, Commanding Officer of the Atlantic Coast in the Royal Canadian Navy. Recognized as the most brilliant cadet in this year's graduating class of the long-term Royal Navy College at Dartmouth, England, he placed highest in the grand aggregate of marks in the passing out examinations, at only 17 years old. He entered the college at the age of 13 1/2 years. Cadet Murray, who is now serving aboard a Royal Navy cruiser, won five other prizes on graduation and was "captain of the river" this year. He visited Halifax this year en route to Newfoundland where his father was stationed as Flag Officer. Pictou County is very proud of Rear-Admiral Murray and double proud of the Admiral and his clever young son. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Two Sons in the R.C.A.F. Mr. Jack MacKenna, of Pictou, was a visitor to New Glasgow with his younger son, a handsome fellow, who is a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force. The young airman with him yesterday, home on a brief furlough, is the second son of Mr. MacKenna's in the Air Force. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Carolyn Wallace
Would anyone have any information on the descendants of Thomas and Margaret Worrall who came to Nova Scotia from Boston in 1776 as loyalists.
Eastern Chronicle, New Glasgow, NS, Tuesday, 06 Oct 1942: Tragic Death of School Girl Shocking was the sudden death of Miss Mabel Grant, the 17 year old daughter of Mr. William Grant, of Mill Brook, near Pictou. The young girl was a Grade Eleven student in Pictou Academy. Between classes she slipped on the stairs and fell a short distance, and evidently injured her spine. She became quite ill for a time. The next day she attended class and then became so ill that she had to be taken home, and in a day or so she passed away. Her death has cast a deep gloom over the classes at the Academy, for Miss Grant had become a favorite with her classmates. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Last Tribute Paid Victim of Accident PICTOU, Oct.5- With naval honors, last tribute was paid here this afternoon to George Morrison, R.C.N., survivor of the Canadian corvette Spikenard, who met death in a motor accident near Kentville. Following a service at the home of his mother, Mrs. Mary Morrison, a public service was conducted at Pictou United Church, with the minister, Rev.A.D. MacKenzie officiating, assisted by Rev.L.R. Bent, Naval Chaplain at this port and also rector of St.James' Anglican Church. Branch No.16, Canadian Legion, attended in a body, four of the members being included in the six pall bearers, Lt.-Commander Buntain, Senior Naval Officer here, as well as a number of other naval men from the training school. There was a firing party at the grave in Haliburton cemetery. In addition to his widowed mother, he is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Frank Thompson, Dorchester, Mass., Mrs. Henry Casey, Rosingdale, Mass., Mrs. Raymond Chaisson, Pictou and Miss Eva Morrison; four brothers, Alexander, Three Brooks, Pic.Co., Geoffrey with the R.C.A.F. in England; John at Debert and Donald at home. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Another Hunting Fatality Second fatality of Nova Scotia's deer hunting season occured in Pictou County early Thursday morning, when John Alex Munroe, well known farmer of Moose River, 25 miles from New Glasgow, was killed instantly by a bullet discharged from his rifle. He had set out in the morning around 7 o'clock on a hunting trip and had only been gone ten minutes when his wife heard a shot. Thinking her husband had shot a deer she called to a neighbour, Samuel Bowie, passing by, to help her husband. He found Mr. Munroe had apparently tripped over a twig and his gun dischsrged, the bullet entering his chest and killing him instantly. R.C.M.P. were notified and Coroner Dr. D.F. McLellan was called to the scene. An inquest was held presided over by the coroner. The jury with Clarance Peers as foreman brought in a verdict of accidental death. The deceased was a prominent farmer of the Moose River district and was the only son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Munroe. He is survived by his wife, the former Eva Cruickshanks. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Births: MURRAY- To Mr. and Mrs. Jack C. Murray, George St., Stellarton, at Aberdeen Hospital, Sept.23rd, 1942, a daughter, Ivana Jacqueline. Hi Paula and list, These are the best web sites for Newfoundland information as far as I¹m concerned. http://ngb.chebucto.org http://nl.canadagenweb.org The sites have census, obits, BMD etc. It helps if you know which part of NL your ancestors are from as it will narrow your selection.
