    3. Sherry, The initial family name appears to be DuPont or Dupont, but to find all index references to it you would need to check both that and Chambon, Du Chambon, and Duchambon, as the indexing methods vary, and the usage might vary from one generation to another. It is similar to George Gordon, Lord Byron, where family information might be found under Gordon or Byron. Écuyer is probably an indication of the occupation or position of the father, rather than part of the name. I don't think you would have a "dit" name for this one (nobility already had enough names to distinguish them). Cheers, Wayne Neily Peregrine Heritage Services, 562 Messenger Rd., Tremont, R. 2. Jay Underwood
    3. I don't know if anyone else has had this probelm, but I figure the squeaky wheel gets the grease, so I have sent the following to National Archives/Library Canada. If anyone else has had similar problems, and knows of some"fixes" I'd love to hear 'em! Jay Underwood Elmsdale Dear sir or madam: I have just spent a very unsatisfactory session on your website "Canadian Directories: Who was where" attempting to locate several names in Hutchinson's Directory of Nova Scotia 1866/67. This session was made immediately fruitless and exasperating by the inclusion of "nlc008157" in the search terms, which I did not place there, and which I can only suppose is the reason why so many pages turned up without any references to the names for which I was searching. For example, when I typed in "Myra"as a search term, I was given page 467 of the directory (Page 482) by your pagination) with absolutely no "Myra" listed. For "Gray, Lewis" I was given 21 pages to search , many of which were advertisement pages with no indication of either term on them. In all I was searcing for seven names, to find proof of their residency in Nova Scotia, and the vagaries of your search engine made it an unrewarding task. Do these problems arise from my computer, or some failing of your system that might be fixed? 1. [NS-L] Cartile orCarteel
    2. Carrie Cartile
    3. Hi everyone I have been trying for 3-4 years to find out who parents of William Cartile are. He was born 1781 and died 1857. He married Hannah Purcell Dec 5 1821 In Portuguese Cove NS. It was spelled on differently Cartile or Carteel on documents. I know there was a Peter Cartile hanged in 1749 for stabbing an English sailor and I am pretty sure they were related somehow. This is the info I have on him: Came to Canada with his brother. He was issued a pilots license to pilot Halifax Harbour and transported merchandise to Halifax. One brother stayed in Halifax and the other returned to France. Gubelino (William) Cartile and Agnes Honora Hutchinson were sponsors to Samuels daughter Anna Marie. Deeds to land they owned had to be cleared in Spain. They must have been stone quarry men, they first lived in a cave they made under the cliff on which his house stood overlooking the Northwest Arm. They had contracts with the government to supply granite blocks for building the Dalhousie University. The record I have for a Cartile in Halifax records is in 1821 when William Cartile married Hannah Purcell of Portuguese Cove. Samuel Purcell was Hannah's father and when that family bought the property which is now called Purcell's Cove, Samuel Purcell deeded a piece of the Purcell land in Portuguese Cove to Hannah and William Cartile, and to Hannah's brother, John. After Wm. Cartile's death Hannah moved to the Purcell's Cove area and she appeared in census records as Hannah Walsh. Hannah was born in Portuguese Cove. If anyone could help, I would be most appreciative Thank you Carrie
