    3. The Eldridge family in Falmouth are mostly descended from John Eldridge and his wife Amelia. I suspect this Amelia is your Emma, as she shows on her son Stephen's marriage as Emily. There is some information in John Duncanson's book on Falmouth on the Eldridge family. I would guess that your Mary A. is the daughter of John and Amelia born Mary Anne in 1857. They appear to have been Anglican so there may be records of the family in the church records of St. George's Anglican Church. The 1881 census has them under Slone. Shows John, aged 28 Mary aged 24 Mary E. aged 4 and John N. aged 8/12 born April. According to the Vitals site, John remarried in 1885 to Agnes Abigail Jackson. And he died an 1910. Agnes died in 1930. On the 1891 census, John shows with Agnes and a bunch of other kids. Ellen and Norman are listed, but then children by Agnes. But others listed are Bessie aged 7 Maisie aged 5 Annie aged 4 Arthur aged 2 and Eleizer aged 1. Arthur Henry's birth is on the vitals site, and he was living in the US. The late registration is signed by his older sister Mrs. Philip H. Riley of Weymouth, Mass. Suspect this is Bessie. Bessie's birth is registered also as Elizabeth Lecora. But her date of birth is 1883, while John and Agnes didn't marry until 1885. But Agnes is listed as her mother. Maisie is probably the Lena May Sloan whose birth is also registered. With her registration is a marriage to Lemuel Sabean. Her mother's death lists the informant and it is her daughter a Sabean. The vitals also list a son Clarence William born in 1892 so after the 1891 census. And an Ethel born in 1902, who married a Baxter. OOOPS. The daughter who was the informant was Annie, who married Alex Sabean. Both of the Sabean marriages are in the Vitals. Arthur Harry remarried in Windsor in 1932 to a Janet Wells. My interest in this family is that Mary Anne's brother Stephen married into my Wallace family. I have tracked that family, but not much wlse on the Eldridge family. Hope this helps some. Better add some more. Elizabeth is Bessie as she married in 1905 in Mass. She is listed twice, once as Bessie L, and again and Bessie Lecora. And her husband is listed as Philip Riley. The marriage was recorded in both Weymoputh and Braintree, thus the two entries. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Patricia Doherty" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, March 23, 2010 7:20 AM Subject: [NS-L] Eldridge Family > Hi Folks > > Looking for any info on John & Emma Eldridge of Falmouth NS, parents of Mary A (Eldridge) Sloan. 3. Thank you John and Jay for the complete information on Mill Stream and the additional sources.. I cited the source I had for my information on Mill Steam I still think that the Mill Stream that Scott Robertson is asking about is in either New Brunswick (more likely) or Québec. There are no Burris in Pictou County in the 1881 Census. The only Hiram Burris in Canada in the 1881 Census in the one living in Brookfield Corner, Colchester County which is in the western part of the county on old Route 2 between Truro and Shebenacadie, while Springville is in the center of Pictou county 35 miles east of Brookfield. In the 1901 Census Hiram Burris was recorded as being born in NB. He is not in NSHVS The 1871 Pictou and Cumberland Census have not yet been transcribed so I cannot check. I gave up on looking in the 1891 Census after waiting for over 5 minutes. bob gillis On 3/16/2010 11:21 AM, John Cordes wrote: > Perhaps this just shows that no one single source of > information should be accepted as 'gospel'.snip

    3. From: Place Names in Pictou County: MILLSTREAM, Pictou County This settlement is about a mile west of Springville on the road leading to Hopewell. In 1878 a large saw mill, a grain mill and a furniture factory were located here. The East Branch of East River has many small brooks such as Mill Stream which flows from Grant's Lake and Lime Brook which flows through Springville. Among early settlers were Mrs. Baxter Campbell and Joseph H. Grant. James Grant one of the passengers in the Hector settled first in Kings County. He came from Urquhart, Scotland. He moved from Kings County to Caribou, Pictou County, finally settling at Mill Stream in 1790. He erected a mill on a stream issuing from Grant's Lake on a site some twenty rods further down than the one later occupied by Grant's Mill. This was the first regular grist mill on the East River. When James Grant died in February, 1822, there were twelve families living at Mill Stream and Lime Brook. The names of John G. Grant and William Grant as farmers and proprietors of a sawmill and a tannery with a post office address at Springville are shown under dates of 1844 and 1833 respectively. Early ministers at Springville were Rev. Angus McGillivrary who died in 1869 and Rev. James MacLean who passed away in 1914. Dr. William R. Grant who was born in 1811 and died in Philadelphia in 1852 was a distinguished physician and surgeon. http://www.parl.ns.ca/placenames/pictoum.html Jay Underwood Elmsdale NS >From Jay Underwood and Railfare*DC Books "Ghost Tracks": http://www.railfare.net/Ghost%20Tracks.html "From Folly to Fortune": http://www.railfare.net/FromFollyToFortune.html "Built for War": http://www.railfare.net/builtforwar.html ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Cordes" <[email protected]> To: "Nova Scotia" <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, March 16, 2010 12:21 PM Subject: Re: [NS-L] Burris / Parker families of Mill Stream area > Perhaps this just shows that no one single source of > information should be accepted as 'gospel'. > > Here's another Government of Canada site which *does* list > Mill Stream: > > http://stds.statcan.gc.ca/sgc-cgt/2006/cmasl-rmrrl-fin-eng.asp?criteria=1212006 > > It is classed as a Locality in the Metropolitan area of New > Glasgow, Pictou County -- at least that's the way I read the > table. > > Some historical information about Mill Stream can be found here: > > http://www.parl.ns.ca/placenames/pictoum.html#Millstream > > Finally, I strongly recommend John Cardinal's superb > collection of places in NS: > > http://www.johncardinal.com/ca/ns/ > > which links to maps for each place. > > John Cordes > Halifax > > > On [2010-03-16 at 09:50am] bob gillis <[email protected]> wrote: >> On 3/15/2010 2:47 PM, Robertson, Scott (Toronto - Finance) wrote: >> >> snip >> >> > Both were living in Mill Stream at the time of the marriage. >> >> Looking up Mill Stream at http://geonames.nrcan.gc.ca/index_e.php >> >> I find: >> >> Querying Geographical Names of Canada >> Formerly Official : List of Records >> >> Your query sent was >> Name : mill stream Feature type : All >> >> Name Other Name Prov Feature type Location >> Mill Stream MacVicars Brook N.S. 3. Perhaps this just shows that no one single source of information should be accepted as 'gospel'. Here's another Government of Canada site which *does* list Mill Stream: http://stds.statcan.gc.ca/sgc-cgt/2006/cmasl-rmrrl-fin-eng.asp?criteria=1212006 It is classed as a Locality in the Metropolitan area of New Glasgow, Pictou County -- at least that's the way I read the table. Some historical information about Mill Stream can be found here: http://www.parl.ns.ca/placenames/pictoum.html#Millstream Finally, I strongly recommend John Cardinal's superb collection of places in NS: http://www.johncardinal.com/ca/ns/ which links to maps for each place.
