    1. [NS-L] Michael, Sophia, and Harriet EISENHAUER 1840's
    2. Bob Hegerich
    3. Hi All: A woman named Harriet Eliza EISENHAUER (one record gives her name as JOHNSON) who says she was born at Chester on 15 Jan 1838 [1901 Census] m.1) William Henry CROOKS of Peggy's Cove on 2 Jan 1862 [two children's birth records] and m.2) John W. RICHARDSON of Peggy's Cove on 15 Jun 1878. I have seen a 29 Mar 1878 death date for William CROOKS but have no source for same. Similarly, I have seen a death date of 2 Oct 1916 for Harriet, but no source. The record of her RICHARDSON marriage gives Harriet's parents as Michael and Matilda EISENHAUER. However, the only Michael EISENHAUER I can find who fits the picture is the Michael EISENHAUER b. 6 Nov 1806 who married Sophia LANTZ. She seems to fit nicely into their birth order, but that could be coincidence. Is there perhaps an EISENHAUER researcher who can ID the sources of the death dates (and places of death), and/or shed any more light on Harriet's parents? -----Bob H-----

    3. Sometime ago, someone on this .list was looking for information about the trial of the pirates of the vessel "Saladin." I noticed a cooy on E-Bay which is "Buy it Now" at $9.99, which, given the cost of printing in these days when everyone expects such information to be free on the internet, is not a bad price. You can find it by searching for E-Bay No.350330612663 I am not associated with the seller.I hope this information is useful to someone on this list. 3. Eastern Chronicle, New Glasgow, N.S., Tuesday, 17 Nov 1942: GOLDBORO The death took place last week in Goldboro of Mrs. Issac Clarke. She was an aged lady and she and her sister, Mrs. Mike Foley lived together in their comfortable home in Goldboro. She was a fine woman in every way, and her late husband, Issac Clarke, was also of the salt of the earth. Those of the Eastern Chronicle feel they can write authoritatively of the deceased. We recall Deborah Fenton before she was Mrs. Clarke and those memories are most precious for Debbie Fenton who helped care for the editor and the business manager, when they were so very young that they needed careful watching. A year ago we both called to see her and it was a happy reunion.Years were beginning to tell on the aged lady, but we looked forward to seeing her again. But it is not to be. That incident in life with its hallowed memories is now of the past. The little gracious woman who so well served her day and generation has been called to her eternal rest. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx H. JAMES MacDONALD WESTVILLE- ILL less than a week, the death of H. 3. Where in NB was your David Leslie living? There is a Robert Leslie in Miramichi who died there on 17 Jan. 1851, age 85 (87 in brackets) according to the Acadian Recorder for Saturday, 8 Feb. 1851, which reported, in his death announcement, that he "was born in Morayshire, Scotland, came out to Halifax in 1788 and shortly afterwards proceeded to Miramichi". Alexander Leslie to Elizabeth Brinser, 1786, Thomas Leslie to Martha Mathews, 1789 Ann Leslie to John Sterling ,1784 And Kevin Leslie to Ann Margaret Uniacke 1817. No names of other family members are listed. Believe any of these could be related to Loyalist , James Leslie of Shelburne. Anyone with another idea for next steps? Thanks, Linda p.s. 3. >From my Poland Roots list <snip> I was just at the Library and Archives Canada (LAC) website and noticed that they are beginning to digitize their microform collections and make them available for free on their website. Unfortunately, the digital images are not indexed. Viewing them would be no different than viewing a roll of microfilm except you can do it from the comfort of your own home. One of the first collections they are starting to digitize are the "Form 30, 1919-1924 Border Entry Records". For the most part, the images are presented in a somewhat alphabetical order. I use that phrasing since I have seen numerous records that weren't exactly in alphabetical order. Check it out at: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/microform-digitization/index-e.html?PHPSESSID=eg7ivan5ikv6elu4l0u45mfmq2 Be sure to click on the "Help" button beside each title for more information about each title. </snip> At present there are two series available: Title Mikan Number 1. 3. Hello, Has anyone ever heard of The Wide Awake club or Wide-Awakes or something to that effect? I have a postcard sent to my Uncle before he died in 1929 at the age of 18. It looks like a school class or possibly a club of some kind. I would guess they are possibly aged 8 to 15 years. They are holding a banner with the words "WIDE-AWAKES" on it. I would like to where this possibly is located. If you would like a scan of it, contact me. Paul Paul Harmon 20 Covey Lane Petite Riviere NS B4V 6N1

    3. Hi Bob, I get this list in digest form so I only see it once a day and from that I see that your question has been well and truly answered already :) I thought, however, that I'd drop in a couple of web sites where you can find ACCURATE information on copyright and so avoid all the myths and fairy tales that seem to surround this subject. This one is by the CIPO (Canadian Intellectual Property Office) and is fairly readable: http://www.cipo.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/cipointernet-internetopic.nsf/eng/h_wr00003.html A couple of comments: I'm not at all sure about the value of their registration scheme. Make your own mind up on that one. I wonder if it might not be a means of introducing a MANDATORY fee based copyright registration system - otherwise known as - another tax! 2nd point: Remember that in making a readable interpretation of a law some of the detail may have been "smoothed" over. The full text of the law can be found at this site: http://laws.justice.gc.ca/eng/C-42/index.html Because it is a legal document this can be a challenging read. However it is THE ONLY real source on this subject and the web based presentation does at least allow you to get directly to the part you need, without plowing through the whole thing. Remember that it IS a legal document so its wording is very precise. What it says it means. If it doesn't specifically say something is included you cant go assuming that it is - for whatever reason. It isn't. Someone else mentioned US Copyright: US Copyright is very different from Canadian copyright in many important detailed provisions in addition to the 50 year / 70 year area (although both countries honor the other's copyright legislation.) There is, for instance, a US provision under which a copyright can be extended - apparently indefinitely - but there doesn't seem to be a place to go to find out if an extension has been registered! I have found it very difficult to interpret US copyright status in specific cases. Nor have I found a site like the CIPO's, which offers a reliable, "plain English" version for quick reference. 1. [NS-L] Desmond Fire, New Glasgow; Mishap, Pictou
    2. Carolyn Wallace
    3. Eastern Chronicle, New Glasgow, N.S., 03 Nov 1942: DOUBLE TRAGEDY A shocking double tragedy took place on the Thorburn road in New Glasgow on Saturday when the home of Norman Desmond was stricken by fire and completely destroyed. Mrs. Desmond had gone out for a pail of water leaving two young children in their cots. Fire broke out and almost at once the house was in flames. Two officers of the R.C.M.P. were driving past and made every effort to enter the house but the flames had complete possession. The frantic mother also tried to reach her children but that was impossible. It was some time before an alarm was rung in and at once the four waggons responded. There was no hydrant near and a long line of hose was run out but the little home was by that time destroyed. In the room upstairs the remains were found, the wee children lying together in the little cot. Under Dr.Robbins a jury was summoned and brought in a verdict of accidental death with a recommendation that a central hydrant should be established in that neighbourhood for the general protection. The deepest sympathy is felt for Mr. and Mrs. Desmond who are a very respectable young couple and every one deeply feels for them in the horrible tragedy that has stricken their home so unexpectedly. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx LOSES FINGERS, THUMB IN MISHAP The citizens of Pictou were shocked to hear of the accident which happened on Thursday morning when David Thomas Munro, Church street, Pictou, had the two first fingers and the thumb of his right hand taken off while he was operating a bugg plane at the Pictou Foundry and Machine Shop. Mr. Munro, who is now 87 years of age, is a cabinet maker and violin maker and has been carrying on his trade in a shop in his residence here. Apparently he had gone to the foundry to use a machine which was not available elsewhere, and was planeing lumber for ironing boards. Suffering from shock, Mr. Munro was taken immediately to Sutherland Memorial hospital. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Carolyn Wallace
