    3. Eastern Chronicle, New Glasgow, N.S., 26 Nov 1942: WALTER SYLVESTER An estimable citizen, a most kindly neighbour and a Christian gentleman has passed to his reward in the death of Mr. Walter Sylvester, Abercrombie Road, New Glasgow. He was 82 years of age and his years had been largely spent in New Glasgow. He was engaged for a long period at clerical work with the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Co. at Trenton, and particularly came under his care the Employees' Relief Association, a mutual organization that gave help to those workers in the plant who were sick or in distress. For the past ten years or more Mr. Sylvester has not enjoyed anything like good health, but daily when the weather was fit he went for a short distance for a walk and became quite a familiar figure, with his cheery greetings. He was an elder in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and a long time member of Norton Lodge of Odd Fellows, of which fraternity he was a Past Grand and when his health permitted one of its most faithful members. Mr. Sylvester was not one who ever intruded himself. He was of an exceedingly quiet nature but behind that quietness there was a sterling character and he could ever be found on the side of the better life and he was resolute in his willingness to render what help he could for the better things. As a consequence his friends were legion and his death arouses the most kindly recollections in the memories of all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, one son, John, of the mechanical staff of the Highway Department, Halifax, and two daughters, Miss Susan Sylvester, Deaconess in the Presbyterian Church Mission in Nova Scotia, and Miss Margaret Sylvester, M.A., of the New Glasgow High School staff. The eldest son of the family, George, resigned from his position as principal in a Halifax public school, and enlisted in the Canadian Army in the Great War. He became a Lieutenant and died on the field of battle. He is buried in France. The interment of our aged friend and neighbour will take place at Abercrombie cemetery on Friday afternoon. Thus passes into the shadows, leaving a golden memory, one who served his day and generation well and faithfully. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx SYDNEY E. PYE The death occured Tuesday, November 24 of Sydney E. Pye, who passed away at the age of 74, after a long illness at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.F. Duffy, 12 Windsor Street, Halifax. The deceased was formerly of Sherbrooke, N.S. Surviving him are two daughters, Edna, Mrs. W.F. Duffy and Florence, Mrs. F. Legere, Montreal; and four brothers, Ode and Arch, Ecum Secum, and George and Frank living in the United States; one half-brother, Alex. His wife and small child predeceased him. The remains are being forwarded to Lochaber, Antigonish County, for burial Friday. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Carolyn Wallace

    3. Hello Gordon, John and all, Here I am. Always willing to learn. I have Janet Lemon/Lemmon the second daughter of William Lemmon and Elizabeth Farnell. She was born in 1832 (nicely fits) in Upper Musquodoboit, NS. She married my Great Grandfather, Miles Grant, s/o Alexander Grant and Agnes (Nancy) Farnell. She died 23 Sep 1868 in Dean Settlement at age 36. Buried in Meaghers Grant Cemetery, NS. Miles Grant married the second time to Elizabeth Ann Champley Henley d/o Thomas Henley and Nancy (Unknown). They are both buried in Meaghers Grant Cemetery also. I shall not debate the Lemon/Lemmon name. Although my father said it was Lemon I tend to agree that it is Lemmon if the Hill was named after William and it was Lemmon Hill.. My dad always joked that we had a "Lemon" in our family. I have Elizabeth Farnell b. Oct 1808 in Upper Musquodoboit, NS d. 10 Oct 1868 (the same year as daughter Janet Lemmon). D/O George Farnell and Margaret Fisher (not Mary). Margaret Fisher was the daughter of John Fisher and Elizabeth Crowley. I will send you the information I have on Janet Lemmon and Miles Grant's children and/or the 10 children I have of William Lemmon and Elizabeth Farnell. Or any other information I have. 3. Greetings All In actual fact John, LEMMON HILLis located in DEAN, NS (formerly Dean Settlement). You are correct that it was named for William LEMMON, b. 1803 in Sussex, England. You are both correct that he was married to Elizabeth "Betsy" FARNELL, d. of George and Mary (Fisher) FARNELL. William and Elizabeth would have been my great, great grandparents. The majority of LEMMON descendants that I have had contact with spell the name with the double M. In 1997 I had the pleasure of visiting the homestead on LEMMON HILL where my grandfather, James Daniel PERRIN was born. James was the son of David and Sarah Jane (Lemmon) PERRIN. Sarah was the last of nine children known to have been born to William and Elizabeth. She was married to David PERRIN, (b. 26 November 1843). James Daniel PERRIN was the fourth of nine chilren born to David and Sarah Jane. All nine PERRIN children were born on LEMMON HILL. Wilma, I would welcome further direct contact with you. You indicate your great grandmother JANET is a daughter of William and Elizabeth (Farnell) LEMMON. However, I have no record of any JANET in that family. The children I show for William and Elizabeth are George (d. 1929), Richard, Huldah, Mary (1834 - 1922), Margaret (1836 - 1919), John (1841 - 1870), Harriet (1842 - 1916), William II (1845 - 1923), Sarah Jane (b. 8 Feb 1850 at Dean, NS. d. 4 Apr 1926). Owing to mail losses full details of the wedding are not available but from letters received it has been learned that the wedding took place in the historic old Holy Trinity Cathedral in whose chancel William Shakespeare and his wife Ann Hathaway lie buried. The church was crowded for the occasion with Canadian soldiers, and the best man was Jimmy Robinson, also of the R.C.A.F. and a former New Westminster bank teller. 3. Eastern Chronicle, New Glasgow, N.S. Tuesday, 24 Nov 1942 McGill Mourns Loss of Prof.L.R. McCurdy McGill University, through its Senate, has expressed regret at the death on October 9 of Lyall Radcliff McCurdy, assistant professor of mechanical engineering. In a formal resolution, adopted yesterday, the Senate paid this tribute to the former professor: "Able, kindly, patient, painstaking, and always reliable, Professor McCurdy did his academic work quietly and did it well. "His death at the early age of 45 is a great loss to the faculty of engineering and to the university. To his widow and family the Senate extends its sincere sympathy."-Montreal Herald. (Prof. McCurdy, the second son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Stanley T. McCurdy of New Glasgow, died a few weeks ago at his home in Montreal. His remains were brought here and the funeral service was held in his old home on Washington Street.) xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Tuesday, 24 Nov 1942 ALFRED WILSON The funeral of the late Alfred Wilson of Westville was held Tuesday afternoon from his home, North Main Street, with the service conducted by Rev.Neil M. Rattee of the Westville United Church. Interment was made at the Auburn cemetery. The late Mr. Wilson was born at Anderson's Mountain, Pictou County, 66 years ago. He was employed for some years at Matheson's Foundry, New Glasgow, as a molder. In 1928 he married Mrs. D.A. Fraser, Westville. and he had been a resident of this town for the past 14 years. He is survived by his wife, as well as by several relatives. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Thursday, 26 Nov 1942 PICTOU AIRMAN REPORTED KILLED Some time ago word from Pictou was that Flight Sergeant William Penney of the Royal Canadian Air Force was missing. Hopes were entertained that he might be a prisoner in Germany. But now rather conclusive word has come to his parents through the commander of the airship, who is a prisoner that the young Pictou man is dead. He was a very charming fellow and popular with everyone who knew him and he was best known as "Dit" Penny. He enlisted in the air service in 1940 and soon won his wings. He had made many operational flights over Europe. He was 26 years of age, a son of Mr. and Mrs. D.F. Penney of Pictou and a grandson of the late William Brennan, for so many years Town Councillor of Pictou. Miss Frances Brennan, Registrar of Probate, Pictou, is an aunt of the missing young airman. This is one of the war incidents that has made a deep impression on the Shiretown where people knew and liked "Dit" Penney all his life. Every genuine sympathy pours out to the grief stricken parents and relatives and the folks of that neighbourly town sharing in the grief, they too looked on this fine young lad as their own. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Carolyn Wallace

    2. Robyn Alexander
    3. Hi Again Folks, I just spoke to my mother and I need to make a correction to the information I just sent. The reunion was originally going to be for descendants of Stanley, but the family has narrowed it even farther. The reunion is the weekend of August 14th. It is for the descendants of Martin Zinck and Costaugusta Gates (also spelled Gatez), They were from the Chester area, specifically from Blanford. I will be finished with the Web site in a couple of weeks and will share the site info as soon as it is posted. Thanks to allRobyn Alexander(granddaughter of Margaret Evans and Horace Zinck)

    3. Hi Folks, I have been lurking and enjoying your posts for the last couple of weeks.I am a descendant of Caspar Zinck and we are having a family reunion for all descendants of Stanley Zinck (son of Caspar) in August. I am developing a web site for the reunion and I would appreciate any information anyone has on the Zincks and the original Scottish settlers. Thank you for your help. Robyn Alexander(Granddaughter of Margaret Zinck)
