Hi Carolyn, We were visiting with some people over the past 2 days, and the Cocoanut Fire was mentioned. Some older people sometimes find themselves inside a building - where no obvious Exit sign, and it scares them. Actually, we had a "bad smoke" incident in a subway tunnel in Downtown Boston a few days ago. And the heavy smoke prevented some from finding an Exit sign. I think a few "escape plans for subway tunnels" might be changed soon. And, most definitely, the Laws were changed in Boston during 1943 / 44. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocoanut_Grove_fire http://www.celebrateboston.com/disasters/cocoanut-grove-fire.htm (Is it OK if I mention this newspaper article on one of the MA Lists?) The Eastern Chronicle, New Glasgow, N.S. Tuesday, 01 Dec 1942: BOSTON FIRE TRAGEDY 470 Lives Taken in a Night Club Fire. 200 Wounded In Hospital The worst tragedy of years hit Boston on Saturday night when fire broke out in a Night Club, the swanky Cocoanut Grove, packed with a thousand persons, turned the place into an inferno and claimed at least 470 lives. Only one other such tragedy had ever taken place on this continent. In 1903 in the Iroquois Theatre fire in Chicago 575 lives were lost. The Boston fire started when a match in the hands of a 16-year old lad inserting an electric light bulb lighted a decorative palm tree and carried to the decorations and threw the crowd into a panic. Hundreds were trampled to death as the patrons raced for the exits that couldn't accommodate them. It was a scene of horror, death and destruction. The details are harrowing to read. The patrons of the place were largely young people celebrating a football victory of the afternoon. Many belonged to the services. It is all too horrible to contemplate and the gloom of the tragedy is naturally wide-spread. Thursday, 03 Dec 1942: CAPE BRETONERS IN COCOANUT GROVE HOLOCAUST At least three former residents of Cape Breton lost their lives in the Cocoanut Grove Night Club fire in Boston Saturday night. Word was received in Sydney of the death in the fire of Helen J. Brough, 32, a native of East Bay, and Mrs. David McKee, 39, formerly of New Waterford and Miss Norma MacDonald,21, a member of a former Sydney family. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Tuesday, 08 Dec 1942: TWO STELLARTON FAMILIES BURNED OUT THIS MORNING Two houses, at the corner of Foord Street and the road to the main highway, just opposite the Miner's Monument, were burned to the ground early this morning. The alarm was sounded around 4 a.m. but when firemen responded quickly to the call, the houses, the fire was beyond control. One house was occupied by Mrs. Hudrey and the other by her son. A terrible thing to be denuded of homes at any time of the year, but particularly in the winter. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Carolyn Wallace

The deceased was a member of St. Andrew's Church congregation. He had been employed at the steel plant for some years. Joseph Fougere, 14, of Poulamond, was shot and killed by a youthful companion in a hunting accident near his home in Richmond County, Tuesday. Fougere, accompanied by George Robert Dauphinee, 15; Hubert Stanley MacDonald,13; Donald Burke, 15 and Francis MacDonald,15, was in the woods setting rabbit snares near their homes at the time of the mishap. Fougere, who carried a gun to the woods had walked off to test the strength of the ice on a small pond nearby. The gun was picked up by Stanley MacDonald, who was unaware the firearm was loaded. Young MacDonald pulled the trigger and the discharge hit Fougere in the head from close range, killing him instantly. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Carolyn Wallace

The Eastern Chronicle, New Glasgow, N.S., Tuesday, 01 Dec 1942: Miss Adeline F. Robinson Pictou The death of Adeline Frances Robinson took place on Tuesday morning, November 24, at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Adams, where she had made her home for the past few years. About a week ago she suffered a paralytic stroke , from which she never regained consciousness. She was 69 years of age and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. C.B. Robinson of Pictou. She had been a life long resident of Pictou and was the last surviving member of her family. Miss Robinson's father was at one time the local agent of the Western Union Telegraph Company. Her mother was a daughter of the late Alexander Lawson, founder of the Yarmouth Herald, and at one time a resident of Pictou. Her only brother, Charles B. Robinson, a distinguished graduate and later a teacher of Pictou Academy and an internationally known botanist, was killed at the age of 41 by the natives of the Netherland East Indies island of Amboyna on December 21, 1913, while he was engaged in classifying the flora of the Phillipine Islands and the Malay Archipelago for the United States government. A number of cousins survive at Yarmouth. Miss Robinson was a member of the Church of England in the activities of which she took a prominent part. About ten days ago she had been elected President of the Women's Auxiliary and she was also active in the ladies Guild. She was interested in the work of the V.O.N. and in that of Princess Rebekah Lodge. The funeral was held on Thursday afternoon with a short service at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Adams, followed by a service at St. James Anglican Church at 2:30. Rev.L.R. Bent, assisted by Rev. Canon A.E. Andrew, officiated. Interment was in the Church of England cemetery. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Mrs. Roy Stewart San Diego, Cal. Word has been received of the death in San Diego, California of Mrs. Roy Stewart, following an illness of three days. Mrs. Stewart was formerly Mary Agnes Gray, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs.A.B. Surviving are two sons, Charles Gray and Alexander John living in Calfornia, and two sisters, Misses Ella and Marguerite Gray, R.N., and one brother, Henry Gray, all of New Glasgow. The funeral and interment took place on Wednesday in San Diego. (Many of the older generation in New Glasgow will learn with regret of the passing of Minnie Gray Stewart. She was a great favorite in the circle of the young people of those years, possessing a delightful personality and a kind and charming manner. Ed.E.C.) xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Mrs. Katherine Davidge NEW GLASGOW, Nov.26- The funeral of the late Mrs. Katherine Davidge, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George A. Mason, was held from the home of her brother, K.F. Mason, MacDonald St., with Canon I.E. Fraser of St. George's Anglican Church officiating. The choir of the church led in the singing of the hyms and Mrs. J.K. McLennan rendered a solo, "No Night There." Mrs. Davidge was a registered nurse by profession and for some years was matron of a private hospital at Melrose, Mass. She was instrumental in organizing the school nursing system in New Glasgow, the first in Nova Scotia. She gave able assistance following the Halifax explosion and also opened the Influenza Hospital in 1917. Her husband Hubert Davidge predeceased her two years ago. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Carolyn Wallace
I have in my possession a Certificate from the Provincial Medical Board, Nova Scotia, issued to Fernando Florens Ducharte admitting him a Licentiate in Medicine and Surgery. The certificate is dated 12 May 1931. I have contacted the Nova Scotia College of Physicians and Surgeons. They do not Dr. Ducharte on their records, but it also appear that their records do not go back to 1931. This is all I have. Does anyone have any awareness of this person? Regards, John
The Eastern Chronicle, New Glasgow, N.S. Tuesday, 24 Nov 1942: From Pictou Landing To South Africa The following tells of news in a letter that has been received by Mr. Wm. Dunbar, 248 Albert St., from a relative who has made her home in South Africa for a number of years, Mrs. Christena Larsen. She was the former Christena McKenzie and was born at Pictou Landing, a daughter of the late Alexander McKenzie and his wife, Jane McDonald McKenzie, who lived there more than half a century ago. There she spent her childhood days. Then owing to her father's work being removed to Stellarton, the family very soon became settled in Stellarton, where she grew up and married. After some time, along with her husband they found their way to South Africa, where they resided at 30 Garden Road, Orchards, Johannesburg, for years. Her husband died nearly two years ago following a short illness. At the present time she is living with a son, and his wife at Nelspruit, Eastern Transval, South Africa. In a letter written Aug. 23, 1942, she writes that it is beginning of spring. " We have planted a lot of vegetables, flowers and sweet peas and I am somewhat skeptical that they will be as handsome as those grown in Canadian soil." Kindly greetings come from her to all her former acquaintances and friends and relatives in Pictou County or wherever they may reside. She enquires personally about some former Pictou Landing friends and concludes with the following sentence: "Canada, our Home and native land, I often think of thee." xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Thursday, 26 Nov 1942: More Gruesome And Tragic Discoveries Four more skeletons of men who lost their lives in the Foord pit explosion of 1880, 62 years ago, have been recovered by miners as they pushed their way forward in re-opening the Foord seam in order to gain the coal left behind many years ago. Approach to this seam is being made through the Allan Shaft. Belts and boots were found with the remains but nothing has as yet been found to identify the men's remains. A furthur search is being made of the locality for something which may be used to make identification possible. Burial plans for the four bodies are being delayed pending furthur evacuation of the area as officials believe that more bodies may be found. The boots are the type worn at that time by all miners and have iron bands at the toes and heels and are heavily hobnailed. This makes a total of 13 bodies recovered out of the 42 miners involved in the explosion. In 1926 eight bodies were found and buried at the Miners Monument on North Foord Street, and in July of this year another body was found, that of the late Angus MacKay, whose son indentified the remains by a watch found at that time. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Carolyn Wallace

Hello Listers, Would anyone be able to give me some help in locating an obituary for Olive Margueritte MacDONALD, who was m(1) to Allen Parker BARKHOUSE and m(2) to Fulton Robert JEWERS? Her name appears on a gravestone in the cemetery of St. Mary's Anglican Church, Harrigan Cove, Halifax County, according to an online transcription. Her dates are given there as 1917 - 1987. I do have the obit for Fulton R JEWERS, but cannot find an entry for Olive in the Chronicle Herald index. A couple of web sites (Paul Jewers and Ron Helpard) report the date of death as 1987, with burial in the Harrigan Cove cemetery as just mentioned. Thanks, John Cordes Halifax

Hi Darlene, I've never heard of this game, either (possibly something similar). But, nowadays.. pantyhose .. So, a parent (or grandparent - me) would (today) need to go to the store and buy a pair of "nylons." :o) Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Darlene Morrison" <[email protected]> To: "NOVA SCOTIA LIST" <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 26, 2010 10:31 AM Subject: Re: [NS-L] Early School yard games > > Okay.
