    3. The Eastern Chronicle, New Glasgow, N.S. Thursday, 10 Dec.1942: LAWS- McKINNON A quiet wedding of much local and provincial interest took place recently in the vestry of Knox Presbyterian Church, Ottawa, when Annie Ruth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard MacKinnon of Thorburn, became the wife of Paymaster Lieutenant-Commander Charles Vincent Laws, son of Walter Laws and the late Mrs. Laws of Medicine Hat, Alberta. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Robert Johnston, D.D., minister of the church. There were no attendants. The bride was gowned in a two-piece dress of old gold crepe, trimmed with tucking and bows of brown velvet ribbon. She wore a brown hat, a brown muscrat coat and her corsage was of mottled brown and gold orchids. Following the ceremony Paymaster Laws and Mrs. Laws left for Victoria, B.C., to which city the groom has been sent from Ottawa. They will stop en route at Medicine and Banff. Mrs. Laws is a graduate of Acadia University and took her year in Dietitics at the Toronto General Hospital. She did Government Research work at the Dalhousie Library before taking the position as Dietitian at Robert Simpson's Limited, Halifax, where she has been for two years. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Thursday, 10 Dec.1942: FRASER- MacLANE Stillwater A very interesting wedding took place on Monday evening at the residence of the bride's father, Stillwater, Guysboro Co., when Florence Irene, daughter of Mr. Henry A. MacLane and the late Mrs. MacLane was united in marriage to Wilfred Fraser, son of the late Mr. and Mrs.A.W. Fraser, also of Stillwater. The ceremony was performed by M. Alexander Firth of the United Church, Sherbrooke, with Mrs. Jennie Cruickshanks playing the Wedding Marches. The bride was attractively gowned in white satin with shoulder veil of silk net and carried a bouquet of pink roses. She was attended by her sister, as matron of honor, Mrs. Sim Whidden, wearing a becoming dress of soft blue satin, while the bride's wee niece, Fay MacLean, was flower girl, in a Kate Greenaway dress of violet and carried a basket of rose petals. The groom was supported by his brother, Mr. Edwin Fraser of Sherbrooke. Following the ceremony congratulations and good wishes were showered on the bride and groom and later delicious refreshments were served. Among the guests present were Mrs. Harold Tune of Needham Heights, Mass., and the bride's brother Mr. Murray MacLane and Mrs. MacLane and daughter Fay, of Trenton and Miss Ida Fraser, niece of the groom, New Glasgow. She carried a bouquet of roses in shades of pink and deep rose with fern. 1. [NS-L] Couples Who Took in "Home Children" ??
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, On one of the N.S. Lists this week the surname, ROSS, was mentioned. That jogged my memory as I think one of the Home Children I research went to a ROSS family. I was curious how many researchers on this List have found out that one of the families / couples did take in a Home Child. It was probably 5-6 yrs. ago when a helpful researcher on the BHC List was able to tell me which families took in the 4 LEWIS children and the 5 CORKILL children arriving in 1874. And, I'm pretty sure I posted the families' names on the Lists at that time. I don't believe I ever found out much about those families, except for the MacDONALD family where Mary CORKILL spent some time. I can mention that the 3 LEWIS girls were probably not related to my "Stanley." I found out Josephine, 14, probably married into a LANE family. I never found out what happened to Elizabeth, ~11, and Mary, ~9. http://www.britishhomechildren.org/ The 2, new "BHC Quilts" should be completed and available for viewing before summer gets here. And, we have found out there is a magazine about Canada's histories, and the Editor has decided to publish a special edition which will include a group of "BHC stories" contributed by their descendants. A picture of my Stanley and Mary is in one of the quilts, and my story about them is included in the "anthology" to be published soon. * Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) * I had already written up a report on Stanley and Mary's .13. children, and sent the unfinished report to 6 of their descendants. I have a small report on the CORKILL ancestors which I will send out next month. I now have a picture of the 3 sisters, but their 2 very young brothers never had children. The oldest brother in B.C. had descendants, but I don't think they had a picture of him. http://www.historysociety.ca/bea.asp P.S. Mrs. Graham did not respond to my letter in regard to the McNUTT family of Charles and Julia. I'll send her the CORKILL story to remind her.

    2. Carolyn Wallace
    3. The Eastern Chronicle, New Glasgow, N.S.: Thursday, 10 Dec 1942: Henry Gray, Seafoam, Pictou County, had the misfortune to lose his house by fire during the recent heavy snow storm, Mr. Gray, who was in the barn at the time, first noticed the roof blazing as he started to return to the house. He rushed inside the house but as the flames, fanned by the gale was making rapid progress he was able to save very little. His dog which had followed him when he returned to the house was also lost in the fire. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Tuesday, 15 Dec 1942: St. JOHN'S FIRE Another horrible fire castrophe. This time in St. John's, Newfoundland, where fire struck the K. of C. Hostel while a large party with many service men, were enjoying a so-called barn dance on Saturday night. 110 lives were lost in one of the most terrible forms of death that of fire or suffocation. No names of those lost have been given out, until the next of kin have been notified. It is a terrible tragedy and following so closely on a similar one in Boston shocks the senses. There will be many saddened homes when the names of the dead are released. There is no knowledge as to how the fire originated and as usual in such cases a panic ensued and the jam in the exits took the lives of many. The toll is appalling 110 dead, 102 in hospital burned and maimed. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Tuesday, 15 Dec 1942: WEEK-END FATALITIES C. MARSH,22, Halifax, killed in a car collision. Harry McNEIL, a native of North Range, N.S., met death in a car accident in Beverley Hills, Mass. Sergeant William H. MURRAY, 41, of the Cape Breton Highlanders, whose home is in Sydney, C.B., met death in England in an accident. He was a veteran of the Great War. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx SLIPPERY DRIVING Last week the roads were slippery and auto driving rather dangerous. The Editor of the paper can speak from experience. His car slid off the highway near Alma and became a wreck down the bank. The car suffered considerable damage, the Editor suffered loss of dignity. Yet he would like to tender his thanks to Bill Miller, a local truck driver, who so kindly came to the rescue. You're a good scout and a valuable fellow in any emergency. Thanks. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Carolyn Wallace

    3. Eastern Chronicle, New Glasgow, N.S.,10 Dec 1942: YOUNGEST N.S. PILOT OFFICER A New Glasgow Boy "Nothing runs so quickly as the years" was a quotation frocibly brought to mind when John Christison arrived home on Sunday night with his "wings" and a commission as Pilot Officer. Surely it was only yesterday that John would come into this office just a bright and a nice youngster going to school! We are proud of John as we are proud of all the youngsters who preceded him and are following him in this greatest of ventures. John's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Christinson accompanied by their son Scott, Mrs. Eva Munro and Mrs. Schrader motored to Moncton, where John graduated from the Service Training School and of the graduating class John was the second youngest and the youngest pilot in Nova Scotia. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx MILITARY PROMOTIONS Lieut. 1. [NS-L] Personal Items, Eastern Chronicle-1942
    2. Carolyn Wallace
    3. The Eastern Chronicle, New Glasgow, N.S., 10 Dec 1942: Mrs. Duncan Fraser of Stillwater was a motor visitor to New Glasgow today. W.H. Ross, New Glasgow fur dealer, was a business visitor to Halifax yesterday. Mrs. Alex Dunbar of Mulgrave, was a recent visitor in New Glasgow. She was the guest of her sisters, Mrs. Ernest Donkin and Mrs. J.G. Thompson. Mrs. George F. McLane left yesterday morning for Ontario, where she will join her husband who is stationed at a military camp there. Captain D.C. Sinclair, K.C. is now permanently established in Halifax in Connection with the Judge Advocates Office in Military District No.6. Mrs. Sydney Turnbull of New Glasgow, is a patient in Colchester County Hospital, recovering from an attack of pleurisy. Mrs. Turnbull's many friends will hope for and early and complete recovery. A blaze on the roof of the residence of Mr. Issac N. Sutherland, at noon today, called out the fire brigade and was put out with dispatch by the fireman. MacDonald- Archibald: Mr. and Mrs. Matthew G. Archibald of Alma, announce the engagement of their daughter, Roberta Catherine, R.N., to James Maxwell MacDonald of Sylvester, Pictou County. The marriage will take place on Dec.15th. His fingers caught in the gear wheel of an overhead crane on Tuesday evening, George Patrie, an employee of the Trenton Steel Works, suffered the loss of the index finger of the right hand, the middle finger of the left with the other fingers of the left hand seriously injured. First aid was rendered and Patrie removed to Aberdeen Hospital where he is resting comfortably as could be expected. Miss Dickson, R.N. of New Glasgow was the guest speaker at the meeting of the Home Nursing Class of Alma and Green Hill at their last regular meeting held last evening at the home of Mrs. J.A. MacKenzie, Alma. Her subject was the care of infantile Paralysis cases under the new Kenney treatment and was of especial interest to the class. The many friends in New Glasgow of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Graham of Halifax, will extend the deepest sympathy in the loss of their son Robley who gave his all at Dieppe. He was a school boy here and a most likeable one. All feel for the parents in their grief. The good news of the slow but sure progress to ultimate health of Miss Evelyn MacIntosh, daughter of Mrs. F.R. MacIntosh of Sunny Brae will be received with deep thankfulness, not only by her relatives but by her many friends in Pictou County. It will be remembered that Miss MacIntosh was the victim of a motor accident in Halifax about eight weeks ago and her recovery was hardly expected. Now she is definitely on the road to health. Mrs. MacIntosh, who has been in Halifax for some time returning this week and is the guest of Mrs. W.D. Johnston, West Side. Miss Catherine MacIntosh will remain in Halifax until her sister is able to return home. Our old friend, Dr.L.D. Densmore of Bathurst, N.B., a great horse lover and owner of some good ones including Wanda Volo 2.07 1-4, writes us that Peter Conroy is looking after his two colts this winter. They are both by Laurel Hanover 1.59 1-2, one out of a filly by Calumet Fingo 2.04 1-4 and the other has its dam Wanda Volo. The Doctor says they are good colts and will get a bit of developing this winter in Peter's capable hands. He says Peter is in good trim and very interested in this youthful speeder. Friends will be glad to hear Peter is so nicely settled and with such interesting material to work on. Just here I would like to say that I never met a man who could level a horse's foot more smoothly, easily and so perfectly as our friend Peter. A master mechanic he could build anything. In the old days we would call him Jack of all Trades, and the cognomen would certainly fit. Master mariner, blacksmith, carpenter, Wheelwright, reinsman- giving records to many trotters and pacers- and many other qualifications not catalogued here. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Carolyn Wallace

Funeral services will be held this afternoon with interment at South Head, Port Morien. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx TWENTY-SIX RENDERED HOMELESS BY FIRE A spectacular fire, declared to have been touched off when a 14-year-old boy tossed a match into oil floating on an inlet- "to see if it would burn"- swept in across the waterfront at Quigley's Corner, Eastern Passage, Saturday afternoon and destroyed eleven buildings- including seven homes- before it could be brought under control. The blaze broke out about three o'clcok, according to reports, when oil near the shore took fire and rapidly swept its way to fish-houses and wharves across the road to menace the entire vicinity. Houses caught and went to the ground in flames, but most of the contents were saved by the quick action of soldiers and residents in the district. In all, 26 were homeless and spent the week end with neighbours who offered them shelter. Following is a list of those who were burned out. Mrs. Nellie Weir and five children, store and home a complete loss. Edward White, son and daughter, home, a complete loss. Henry DeYoung and three children, home burned to the ground.
