I ran into this when researching my book "Ketchum's Folly" more thna ten years ago..Ketchum's railway was built on gthe Isthmus of Chignecto, but at that time "isthmus" was a popular word for any thin stretch of land connecting two larger stretches. I recall running across the phase "blockhouse and isthmus" when it referred to what is now the Dutch Village area of Halifax...does this make a closer geographical connection to your Schmidts?..."Dutch" was actually a corruption of "Deutch" (German) and some Swiss spoke German. I should qualify (correct!) one thing I said below: the list of heads of families is not restricted to Halifax -- that is my mistake. I do not know which "Block House" is being referred to. I am also not positive about "Isthmus" but *guess* that it probably refers to what is meant even now by 'isthmus' in Nova Scotia, namely the Isthmus of Chignecto. Not at all sure about any of this -- anyone? Hi Bob, I will quote your whole message for completeness, but only want to comment on the last part, the appearance of the name "Johannes Schmidt" in a volume of the Nova Scotia Historical Society. There is a "1" in each of the columns, Males above 16 and Females above 16 for a Total of 2. The list appears in what seems to be a rather complete census of Halifax, dated July, 1752: A list of the families of English, Swiss, etc., which have been settled in Nova Scotia since the year 1749, and who now are settlers in the places hereafter mentioned. It is interesting that this Johannes Schmidt is not living with the "Swiss and Germans in the North Suburbs". Hi List: I'm looking for any information on an Edward GARAGAN, born Ireland, who married Louisa L. ROGERS, probably in Ireland. Louisa was the daughter of Frederick & Hannah (DOYLE) Rogers, born abt 1863 in Quebec. Her father was a member of the British Army, who served in England>Quebec> Wales> Barbados before coming to Halifax, permanently, in 1878 (Louisa was with the family on the 1881 census). Edward GARAGAN (possibly a member of Royal Irish Rifles, 2nd Battalion) died in Egypt, prior to his son being born, in Halifax in April of 1891. Known children of Louisa & Edward were: Mary Gertrude b 1886, Ireland, d 1904, Halifax Frederick William b 1887, Gibraltar, d 1951, Halifax & Edward, b Apr 1891,Halifax. Louisa m2 John Mitchell & had 3 additional children; Marion, Gordon & Raymond. Any assistance with the GARAGAN genealogy would be greatly appreciated! Sandi Bellefeuille, Mississauga, ON

Hi Bob, I have her parents as: Johann Christoph Gottlieb Ludwig HAPPOLT (b. 7 April 1724 in Braunsbach, Wurttenburg) and his second wife Marie Barbara HIMMELMANN (b.abt 1728 in the Palatinate). I show 6 children for these parents including Anna Barbara. Unfortunately I do not have a reference for this family other than "Happolt website", noted when I was new to genealogy. I took a quick look on Rootsweb just now for Maria Barbara Himmelmann and there is only one entry, the poster's reference may be the same website I saw so many years ago but the reference is not clear. My information gives a limited ancestry for Johann Cristoph for a further 5 generations on his father's side back to 1565. I apologize for the incompleteness of my information but I hope it will be of some help, Mary Anne On 12 May 2010 at 0:19, Bob Hegerich wrote: > Hi All: > > Ferdinand SHAFFNER, s/o Adam and Anna Margaretha SHAFFNER is born > aboard > the MURDOCK a few days out from Halifax [Calnek's /History of > Annapolis > County/, page 559], which would place his birth in 1751. The Eastern Chronicle, New Glasgow, N.S., Tuesday, 22 Dec 1942: EARLY MORNING ALARM IN STELLARTON Four Families Lose Possessions Early this morning fire broke out in the building owned by William DesLaurier on Foord St., first building north of the Oddfellow's Hall, Stellarton. It was a wooden building on the corner of Foord and Union Streets but fortunately the Oddfellow's Hall on the south side and Medical Hall on the north are brick and the firemen promptly on the scene and doing what they could for the doomed building, turned their attention to the saving of surrounding homes, especially that of Mrs. Jarline situated below on Union Street, which runs south from Foord. The building until recently was headquarters for E. Eaton Order Office, but was now occupied by four families, John Higgins, Wm. Greely, a family by the name of MacEwan and a family from Guysboro just moved in within the last few days. The last three have small children and everything the tenants possessed were lost. The loss will also be a big one for the owner who had gone recently to some expense to make the place over. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ABERCROMBIE FIRE The deepest sympathy will be extended to Warren Jones of Abercrombie and family, whose home was badly damaged by fire on Friday night. Mr. Jones was a mail carrier for that district and for some time has been confined to the house through illness. During his illness his daughter looked after the mail route until she too was taken ill. No man could have been more faithful to his duties as mail carrier and the many friends along the route who knew and so liked him will deeply sympathize with him in his misfortune. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Carolyn Wallace

We would join in kindest congratulation to Mr. Muir on his splendid record. We publish the story from the Halifax Herald. Mr. Muir was born in Stellarton at Bunker Hill in 1859. When seven years of age he moved to Westville and has been a resident of that town since. Mr. Muir was married twice, his first wife passed away 35 years ago and they had seven children. He served four years as mayor of Westville, and has been a councillor for a period of 40 years and is at present one of Westville's Councillors. One election for Councillors there were five candidates and that year Mr. Muir received the largest vote of his 40 years. Last year he went in as Councillor by acclamation. He always took a keen interest in sports and contributed towards any clean sport which the town of Westville was noted for through the years. Mr. Muir with his second wife, have a nice home on Church Street and both are highly respected citizens. Mr. Muir was a member of the I.O.O.F. for over 50 years and received a 50-year jewel. He never had any serious accident and worked under five different managers. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx HUGH F. DOHERTY The death of Hugh Francis Doherty occured on Friday morning in Sussex, N.B.. He was in his seventy-sixth year and was the youngest son of the late John and Margaret Madden Doherty. Although in poor health for the last ten or twelve years, his death came as a shock to his relatives and friends. The deceased is survived by his second wife, thirteen children, two brothers and ten grandchildren. Four brothers and two sisters predeceased him. Two daughters by his first marriage are: Framces(Mrs. Gordon Fulton), of Minto, N.B.; and Nora, of New Glasgow. Hello Listers, I am seeking an obituary for Althea JENNEX, believed to have died in 1993. This DoD is according to Peter Gergely's site: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=drgnmastr&id=I10835 The Gergely site also indicates that she married a DELORY, given name unknown. Althea (possibly Althea Ray, or Althea W.) is d/o Louis / Lewis E. JENNEX and Ella Maud BAKER; in turn Ella Maud BAKER is d/o Cecilia SLAUENWHITE [BobH please note] and Azariah Nathaniel [Asa] BAKER. See this page http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hegerich/b11783.htm#P11783 for more details on the SLAUENWHITE ancestry. My interest is due to a request for help involving possible children (names: Garnet and Robert) of Althea. Needless to say, I have not found an obituary in the Herald CD. I suspect this may be due to a) another surname in use at time of death or b) it wasn't published in the Herald. Any clues or hints gratefully received. Thanks, John Cordes
