    3. The Halifax Chronicle Herald, February 16, 2010 issue, contained the obituary of Sylvia Martha (Weagle) Alexander who died on February 13, 2010, in Dartmouth, NS. Sylvia was married to my cousin, William (Bill) Alexander, who was born in Goldboro, Guys. Co., NS. Sylvia's family has asked if I have any info regarding the Weagle Family, i.e., her ancestors. As I don't, I am asking for help, for Sylvia's family, in learning about their mother's people. Sylvia Weagle was born in Middlewood, Lunenburg Co., on January 3, 1932. Her parents were the late Roland and Helen Weagle. Her siblings were, Lillian (deceased), Margaret, Cyril and Carl. Sylvia spent most of her life in the Dartmouth, NS area. Any information, that is available, can be responded to, using the Nova Scotia &/or Lunen Links, rootsweb linkings or can be forwarded, directly, to me @ [email protected] . All info provided will be appreciated & thankfully accepted by the Family of Sylvia Martha (Weagle) Alexander. Thanks for your assistance, Malcolm Silver Dartmouth

    1. [NS-L] Seeking Birth Father: Surnames WEIR and ???
    2. Heather Waddingham
    3. Hi List:) I am posting on behalf of a friend, Kelly. Kelly was adopted at birth in NS and for several years has been looking for her birth family. She has been able to discover (via a NS list) that her birth mother was Betty May Weir of Antigonish in 1969. She is now searching for her birth father. Kelly was born Lisa Dawn WEIR September 16, 1969 at the Halifax Infirmary. Betty was a member of the United Church and was 19 at the time. She had completed grade 11 and a commercial course. She was described as being 5ft 6, 110 pounds with brown hair, blue eyes and "rather anxious". Hobbies included curling, singing and enjoyed cheerleeding during her highschool years. The birthfather of Kelly was NOT aware of Ms. WEIR's pregnancy. He appears in information as "Mr. M" he was 23 in 1969, of Roman Catholic faith and had gone to Antigonish from Newfoundland. He had completed high school, had a Bachelor of Arts from a University and was employed as a teacher. He was 5'5, dark brown hair and brown eyes, 140 pounds. He was described as being outgoing, good natured, sports minded and interested in skiing, hunting and reading. Mr M's father was a farmer who owned property in Newfoundland. He was 63 years of age and had a grade 10 education. The mother was 55 and stayed at home. They had a large family. In addition to Mr M there was a 31 year old sister who had completed university and was a "nun". There was another sister age 25 who had completed a commercial course and was employed as a secretary. Mr M also had "4 brothers and sisters" all in highschool in Newfoundland. Ms WEIR had indicated in the information at the time of Kelly's birth that she had known Mr M for a period of 6 months. If ANY of this sounds familiar please contact me off list. If you wish to contact Kelly directly you may do so at [email protected] . Kelly has made contact with her birthmother. She unfortunately refuses to correspond with Kelly and answer her questions. Kelly also is aware that Betty May has two daughters in the province of New Brunswick. She has made contact with one of the daughters but unfortunately they are not interested in establishing a relationship at this time. Thanks so much for your help!! This long established, free-access National Site is proud to announce that there are more than 600 cemeteries completely photographed and onboard, amounting to over 350,000 searchable photographs. There have been over 580,000 visitors to the site. Each day there are over 200 folks browsing the site and there are over 10,000 name searches each month. * 3. This site is not "Sponsored" and therefore does not "dance to some company's tune" and will remain that way. However, there are some moderate expenses involved and donations of funds or gas cards by visitors certainly do help with gasoline to reach unphotographed cemeteries. * 4. If you have family or friends anywhere in Canada, who may be interested in photographing their local cemeteries, please inform them of the availability of The Canadian Gravemarker Gallery. Their photographed cemeteries will have world wide exposure on this National Cemetery website. * 5. Please go to the Website at: http://www.gravemarkers.ca and click on the "Join Updates Newsletter" button located just above the weather row. * * HELPFUL HINTS: ************* * 1. Cemeteries online have spousal duplicated photographs. This means a photo of a stone which also has the spouse's maiden name showing, is duplicated and when one searches using the onboard search engine, for a surname, the spouse's surname will be reported as a separate "search result". * 2. If your "search engine" keyword is the same as a city, town, village, township then please read the valuable tip below: * A. *CONCERN:* If your "search engine" keyword you are using is say: pembrok* then your search will pick up all the pembroke surnames....*BUT* ...it will also pick up all the website pages where pembroke is used as a heading or meta name. * B. *SOLUTION:* Change your keyword to: pembrok1 and the search engine will only pick up the gravemarkers with the pembroke surname. * 3. If you don't see a Community and its' cemeteries online...it means a volunteer has not photographed and sent me the cemetery photographs. Can you or some of your family or friends help out by photographing the missing cemeteries....? * * ********************************************* Bye for now.......Murray P l e t s c h * Cdn Gravemarker Gallery - http://gravemarkers.ca * Ont Historic Gallery - http://rootsweb.com/~cannor *

    1. [NS-L] Seeking a Weinacht/Whynot Family Bible from Upper Northfield, Lun. Co.
    2. Pat Smith
    3. Hi Listers: A Weinacht/Whynot Family Bible recorded the birth of Leon Jerret Whynot , in Upper Northfield, Lun. Co., 24 Jun 1892; s/o Edmund & Alice Whynot. The Bible entry was viewed and an affidavit signed to this effect by Justice of the Peace H.M. Bowlby in Kingston, Kings County, 8 Aug 1956 [NSHVS Reg.Yr 1892, p.99100057]. It seems very likely that this Family Bible is still around somewhere, as it had already been kept for over sixty years at the time of the affidavit and may actually be several generations older than the information known to be recorded in it. Does anyone have any knowledge of the whereabouts of this Bible, please? I am trying to confirm the birth date of a first cousin of Leon Jerret Whynot, Blanche E. Whynot, d/o Zephaniah & Bessie Whynot, who was supposedly born 28 Jun 1893, in Upper Northfield. In the 1891 Canadian Census, Zeph & Bessie were enumerated at River Hebert, Cumberland Co. and then they appear in the 1900 U.S. Census for Rumford, Oxford Co., Maine. Zeph and Bessie appear to have circled back to Zeph's home in Upper Northfield, where Blanche was born, before heading down to Maine, where the name later became Whynaught. I am contacting Museums, Gen. Societies, NSARM, and other likely sources directly. In the meantime, here's hoping that someone on the lists might be able to help. Thanks, Pat Smith, Lunenburg

    3. The Eastern Chronicle. New Glasgow, N.S., 24 Sep 1936: Word has been received here of the splendid work being achieved on the African Gold Coast by Dr. John Denoon, son of the late Rev. John Denoon, D.D. and Mrs. Denoon. Dr. Denoon , who is a Dalhousie graduate, is physician in charge of a territory 7000 miles square, requiring constant travelling through the African bush. The sleeping sickness is the greatest menace and two large hospitals and five dispensaries to fight this dread disease are situated at widely separate points. Dr. Denoon is also doing research work in the hope of alleviating the suffering caused by this tropical scrouge. Mr. and Mrs. Donald A. Fraser of Cambridge, Mass., was in New Glasgow this week seeing Mr. Fraser's father Mr. Alex J. Fraser, Abercrombie Road. They made the trip here by motor and left to visit Mrs. Fraser's former home in Prince Edward Island. Mr. Donald F. Curry of Halifax, was a week end guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Fraser, Stellarton. Mr. Joseph MacDonald of Big Island was a visitor in New Glasgow on Tuesday. Mrs. H.A. Frame spent the week end with Miss Margaret Bannerman on the teaching staff of the home at Barney's River. Mrs. Scott MacDonald and small son, Scotty, were guests over the week end of Mrs. MacDonald's mother, Mrs. W.D. Fife, Queen St., Truro. Mrs. W.H. Matheson spent the week end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Neil S. Ross, Truro on Tuesday. Her sister, Miss Marion Ross left Truro on Tuesday morning to visit relatives in New York. Mrs. John Collie, wife of Dr. John Collie, London, England, is visiting with Dr. and Mrs. R.M. Benvie. Mrs. Collie is vacationing at Dr. Collie's former home, River John. Mrs. and Mrs. W.T.(F?) Fraser and family spent the week end with Mrs. Fraser's father, Dr. R.C. Tait, Shediac. They had motored their daughter Katherine to Sackville for her second year at Mount Allison University. They met their son Chesley, who had been visiting in Toronto for a fortnight, at Shediac and brought him back. Trenton Scotias won the first game of the Nova Scotia finals by defeating the Lunenburg All Stars, yesterday before over two thousand fans by 15 to 6 score. The Scotias drove out 19 hits including two home runs by Hessian and Dec. Dunn was given good support by his team. He allowed only six hits and fanned 11. Sonny MacDonald, with five hits in six times up, was the batting star of the game. He was closely followed by Bransfield and V. 1. [NS-L] Charles Atkins (1825 - 1852) & Eloisa Burke (1827 - 1854)
    2. David Reed
    3. I am trying to prove a Mayflower descent and all three possibilities go through Charles and Eloise (Burke) Atkins of Port Medway, my 2g-grandparents. I would like to find documentation to prove that Charles Atkins is the son of Charles Atkins (1794 - 1879) and his wife Mary Foster (1797 - 1856) and that Eloise Burke is the daughter of Joseph Burke (1792 - 1846) and Susannah McLeod (1795 - 1868). Primary records are sparse in that time frame and the families were Baptist, which limits church records as sources. I have a very graphic newspaper account of Charles Atkins death in 1852; it mentions his father (unnamed), his brothers (unnamed), his wife (unnamed) and his two daughters (unnamed). Most frustrating. I would appreciate any suggestions as to what records might be available to help solve this. -- David Reed ([email protected]) Toronto, Ontario, Canada

    1. [NS-L] Deaths: William Stewart,New Glasgow; Clifford Dane, Dartmouth
    2. Carolyn Wallace
    3. The Eastern Chronicle, New Glasgow, N.S., Sep 1936: WILLIAM STEWART DEAD William Stewart, truckman, of Merigomish Road, died in Aberdeen Hospital following an operation yesterday. He was one of the well-known figures of the town and a genial kindly man who has many friends. He was a son of the late Rev.Wm. Stewart of McLellan's Brook, and had spent nearly all his years in New Glasgow engaged in the coal business. He is survived by his wife, who is now absent on a visit to the United States, and two sons, Athol and Ervin who reside at home with their parents. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Dr. MacKay, Thorburn; Miss Grace Stewart, R.N., New York; and Mrs. S. Brooks, New Glasgow, and one brother, Mr. Neil Stewart, of Boston. The sympathy of many friends is extended to the family and relatives of the deceased in their bereavement. Those who knew Mr. Stewart will miss him. He was the soul of geniality and in every regard a worthy citizen. The funeral will take place on Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Interment at Lorne Street cemetery. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx CLIFFORD DANE A legal advertisement in the Halifax Chronicle from a South Shields (Eng.) firm of solicitors asked for James Donaldson (also known as Clifford Dane) last heard of in Trenton, N.S. The solicitors had something to his advantage to communicate to him. It's too late. Dane is dead. Many here will remember him when he resided in Trenton and Stellarton. He was a natural born organizerand though not a personally attractive fellow in some ways he had the gift of gathering men about him and inspiring confidence. He organized the steel workers at Trenton and also organized the coal workers at Stellarton and welded the latter into a strong body at the time. He left here and went to Dartmouth to reside and there died. While living in Dartmouth he returned to Stellarton and unveiled the miners' monument, near the car barns. He was never in affluent circumstances and it seems a pity that the good fortune headed in his direction did not come during his lifetime. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Carolyn Wallace

    1. [NS-L] Cooke of Guysborough County
    2. Barbara Meredith
    3. Hello, is there anyone who has a family tree of the Cookes of Guysborough and Goldborough in Guysborough County????? My question is concerning a Thomas Cooke who had a pub at Port Mouton in Queens County in the 1760's, and was mentioned in Perkins' Diary written at LIverpool. I am looking for a possible Joseph who would have been born circa 1790 give or take a few years, and wonder if any of the Cookes in Guysborough used the given name of Joseph? There was also a Thomas Cook at Port Mouton who married a Pierce. I am trying to establish if there is any relationship between the Port Mouton families and the Guysborough families. The Loyalists arrived first at Port Mouton and after the fire burned their homes, most of them moved to Guysborough County. I'm just wondering if some of them came back to Port Mouton??? Would appreciate any help or ideas. Thanks. Barb in Alberta
