Of no relation to me but on another message board I frequent , was a discussion about famous Nottingham folk . Apparently there is a plaque in St. Marys Church , Nottingham for a Lieutenant James Still who died in 1822 , off Sierra Leone ,whilst on the HMS Pheasant a ship and crew that was trying to clear up the slave trade . image here: http://www.geolocation.ws/v/W/File%3ALieutenant%20James%20Still%20memorial.jpg/-/en I cannot find a birth for James Still and its a bit of a mystery as I can't see any link to Nottingham for him . Can anyone find a birth for him ? I wonder why that stone is in St. Marys ? This is the only newspaper announcement of his death I can see : Salisbury. Lieutenant James Still, of his Majesty's ship Pheasant, son Peter Still, Esq. Devonshire-place (London). the inst. died, his residence Bath.......... Salisbury and Winchester Journal South West, England 18/03/1822 Article There is a wedding for what looks like James Stills sister , Marian Still to Arthur Wilton Dashwood 15/05/1827. Alexander Dashwood, to Marian Still, youngest daughter of Peter Still, Esq. of Devonshire-place. Morning Post London, England 16/05/1827 Article According to a tree on rootsweb , Marian Still was born Tytherley, Hants in 1804 . OK , James Still was born about 1799 so its possible his father , Peter Still could have lived in Notts prior to his move to a posh part of London (Devonshire Place) but no evidence , so a mystery ! There is a marriage (again on Rootsweb) for his father Peter Still to a Letitia Lawrence (b.1773) . She was born in Westchester County , New York and was buried there too in 1858.
James Still was baptised on 2 Oct 1800 at West Tytherley, Hampshire, son of Peter and Mary Still of Queens St, Bloomsbury, London. Salisbury and Winchester Journal, 18 Mar 1822 On the 12th of October last died, off Sierra Leone, Lieutenant James Still, of his Majesty's ship Pheasant, son of Peter Still Esq of Devonshire place. Peter Still, born in 1760 at East Knoyle, Wiltshire, was an attorney at Lincoln's Inn. He married Mary Strong, daughter of his partner William Strong, on 8 Jun 1795 at Holborn St George the Martyr, London. He died on 28 Feb 1832 in Bath, Somerset. Peter was buried on 6 Mar 1832 at East Knoyle, Wiltshire. Mary Still, relict of Peter, died on 20 Sep 1841 in London. I didn't find any connection to Nottingham for this family. Peter Still who married Letitia Lawrence belongs to a different family.
