    1. [NTT] Christmas songs

    3. Given that family history is not just facts, dates and people, but what people did and said, can I throw open the subject of bowdlerised Christmas Carols. As a child growing up on a Nottingham council estate in the late 40's and early 50's I recall that we used to sing "our" versions of Christmas songs. The only 2 I can remember went roughly so:- We three Kings of Orient are, One in a Taxi, one in a car, One on a scooter, papping his hooter, Following yonder star. The scooter in question was not of course a Vespa or Lambretta, but a child's scooter that you scooted along with your foot. Now none of the ones I knew had horns, so how come we sang about hooters? Probably just because it rhymed. The other one was:- Whilst Shepherds washed their socks at night, All steaming in the pot, A lump of soot came tumbling down, And spoilt the blinkin' lot. Another illogical wording. As the Shepherds were seated outside, how could a lump of soot come down? Oh the innocence of youth. Anyone else remember singing these? Brian Binns
