Clive, If the time frame is around 1818, then the 45th Regiment of Foot (Sherwood Foresters) were definitely stationed in Cork about that time, as that is also when/where one of my ancestors married a Irish girl before being discharged at the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham. Given his age, and assuming he was in the 45th, Samuel may also have served in the Peninsular War. If so, and given he was still alive in the 1840s, he would have qualified for the General Service Medal. The National Archives may still have Samuel's 'WO97' records - see * http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/default.htm*<http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/default.htm> Rob Nottingham, UK -----Original Message----- From: nottsgen-bounces@rootsweb.com [*mailto:nottsgen-bounces@rootsweb.com*<nottsgen-bounces@rootsweb.com>] On Behalf Of Nivard Ovington Sent: 30 October 2008 16:33 To: Clive Hayhoe; Notts Mailing List Subject: Re: [NTT] Notts regiments in Ireland circa 1800 Hi Clive The only Samuel BOSTOCK I can find that fits your details is a Derbyshire born Samuel BOSTOCK b1776 who has a wife Alice born in Ireland (1851 census) They are in the Parish of St Mary Nottingham at Pomfret Street The one fly in the ointment is Alices age, she is enumerated as born 1804 (47) in 1851 Is this your couple? as I cannot find another Alice could be a second wife of course or she could be enumerated incorrectly I find the same couple (bar Alices age) in 1841 in the same street (although Samuel is enumerated as Y born in Notts) There she is numerated as 55 so a max of 59 down to 55 (ages rounded down to nearest five in 1841) >From the ages of the possible children they returned to England around >1812 to 1829 Have you asked at Dublin to see if they have information on any Regiments there around 1800? Have you found the baptism as that may give a mention of his Regt (if he had one of course) I would not be to hung up about him being in a Notts/Derby Regiment as various Regts recruited in the most unlikely of places around the Country Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) Hi All, Can anyone offer advice as to how I can research the possibility of Notts males being involved in military service in Ireland circa 1800? I note that the Union of Ireland legisation was passed by the British Parliment in 1800 (Irish Parliment abolished at that time) and I am wondering if there was any Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire military involvement during this period..?? My Notts ancestor Samuel Bostock (bn abt 1776) had a child born in Dublin in about 1803 to his wife Alice (born Ireland abt 1782) and thus I surmise that he may have married Alice in Ireland circa 1800-02 and feel that if so then he may have been in Ireland at that time due to a military connection..?? The dates reagrding Samuel and Alice come from the Nottm 1841-51 census. Regards, Clive Hayhoe.
