I hope the Administrator will not construe this message as advertising (!) but I would like to bring to the notice of listers my article in the latest (November) issue of the magazine Practical Family History on the ancestry of the well-known actress Josephine Tewson - she's Elizabeth in Keeping Up Appearances, next-door neighbour of the monumentally snobbish Hyacinth Bucket who panics every time she has to go in for coffee because she's terrified of breaking one of Hyacinth's best cups. She's also in Last of the Summer Wine as the spinster librarian, Miss Davenport, and she starred in a major comedy series with Ronnie Barker, back in the 80s, called Clarence. She's been around as one of Britain's best comedy actresses for probably 50 years and more. The reason I am posting this is because Josephine descends in her mother's family tree from the Morley family of Sneinton, or Old Sneinton, Nottingham. I managed to get her line back to one Gregory Morley, born circa 1718, who married Mary Silcock at Nottingham St Mary in 1745. One branch of the Morleys became the founders of the famous hosiery firm, but Jo's great-grandfather was William Morley, baptised 1821 at St Mary's, Nottingham, d. 1912, who moved to Derby and worked his way up to become Chief Clerk of the Midland Railway. He was also an important figure in Derbyshire sport, serving on the Derbyshire County Cricket Club committee and being a founder of Derby County FC in 1884 (though perhaps this will not be a popular thing to say on a Nottinghamshire list!). Several listers were kind enough to help me earlier this year when I mentioned I was doing this research into the Morleys of Old Sneinton, though I couldn't at the time reveal the name of my subject. I want to thank them all and to say that if anyone feels my own expertise in researching in Yorkshire may be of help, then feel free to contact me. There is a chart back to all her 16 gt-gt-grandparents in Practical Family History, but below are Jo's Nottingham ancestors, in case anyone thinks they may be related. She is an absolutely lovely person, totally down-to- earth, and I am sure she would be interested to hear. Jo's paternal ancestry is fascinating because her father was a foundling in the famous Thomas Coram Foundling Hospital in London, but I managed to obtain access to his records which was quite moving for Jo as she'd never known his true identity before.
