Christine, You are partly correct, but sadly Raleigh cycles are not made in Nottingham now. They have a much smaller base in Kimberley. Raleigh certainly had a big presence in Nottingham in 1911, with their massive factory in Lenton. I have researched a sideshoot of my tree, CAMPION, and they had a cycle business on Robin Hood Street, Nottingham, with another CAMPION making cycles under the Gazelle name on Russell Street (I'm not certain but this could have been the old Raleigh factory before they moved to Lenton). One of William Campion's employees was Thomas Humber, who later founded his own cycle factory in Beeston, but by 1908 had moved to Coventry. This company evolved into The Humber Car Company. Campion's also made motor cycles and had at least 4 cycle shops in Nottingham, as well as branches in Leicester and Mansfield. They later moved into motor tricycles. William's son Edwin William CAMPION also ran The Sir Colin Campbell pub on Robin Hood Street. Edwin was an active member of the Nottingham Naturalists society, and one of his sons, George was a local archaeologist who helped research and map the Broad Marsh/Drury Hill caves in the 1930s. In 1911 he was living in Nottingham and his occupation was described as "Machine Hand Tools - Cycle Maker". I know that Raleigh bicycles are made in Nottingham now and wonder whether the company was there in 1911 - or if there were other bicycle makers at that time. Joseph was married to MARTHA (nee Scott) and their children were Charlotte, Rose Edith, Doris Mary and Arthur. Doris and Arthur were born in Nottingham. The family moved to London later because their fifth child, William George, was born in Lewisham in 1916. I would really like to track down Joseph's grandchildren who may still be alive today.
