Hi: The reason we came up with different William Bramley, is because of a transcription error. Being so far away, I have subscribed to Ancestry.com and have access to the original scanned page. He is listed on the transcribed 1881 censuc as William H. Branly. But someone else has noted the error and changed it on Ancestry. The children are right. My grandfather was 3 at the time. They lived at 17 Key Street. In the 1891 census, they lived at the same address, but by that time they had 8 children. And I noted another transcription error. They have a Gerty, age 4 daughter listed. This is actually Berty, son. I assume that he was still in dresses at the time and looked like a girl. In 1901 census, he is there at age 14. I remember my Uncle Bernard. By 1901 they had moved to Hempshall Lane, and had 13 children. I know they had one more. By this time grandfather had left home and got married. I think out of self defence, because all the other children are still at home. I know how small the houses were on Hempshall Lane, so I don't know how they all fit. I actuall think that I found my William Bramley's birth parents. George and Sarah, living in Bulwell in 1861. He was age 5. Then george dissappears and Sarah turns up married to someone else in 1871. William is there age 14, listed as son-in-law. I assume step son. there are three other children of Sarah and John Sheldon , Labourer. I am trying to find William's marriage record, as I assume that parents are listed. But up to now have not had any luck. His wife's name was Elizabeth, but I have no idea what her maiden name was. Transcription errors make for some detective work, but its so satisfying when you figure it out. Cutts married an Elizabeth Bramley 25 July 1831 at Hucknall St. Mary, and a Grace Stout nee Cutts (b 1811) is living in Quarry Rd. Bulwell in 1841.. I also have Statons in my line so would be pleased to hear of your family as you research it - we could be distantly connected!! If you go to picturethepast. website (Notts CC Library Service on lin) you can get a photo of Quarry Rd. (google for website) I believe, too, that SANKEYS made plant pots, etc. at Bulwell/Basford and you could check this by going to historical directories - also on line. Again, just google whenever you have a query and amazing what comes up. William born 1856 could be one of several - you need to check the parish records for Bulwell but this seems the likely one: (From Notts FHS Index - also very useful if you live away from records - I swear by it. I knew there were some disreputable people in my family background but not this bad, Police, argggg. So in 1881 he is listed as living in Bulwell and listed as a labourer. Why would someone leave off being a police constable and move. Is there any way to find out.
