OK Jean Dear Listers This is a message for Dianne: Normally I would do this off list but I tried to reply to her directly but this was bounced. At the moment I cannot get any message through which has a yahoo.co.uk server - including my daughter and her husband! It is really annoying and I cannot get it fixed just yet as our computer fixer is on holiday! We do have a decent protection system. I can receive, from yahoo however. Jean Thank you Dianne, Do you have the opportunity to research any of them further? I am especially interested in the D. Nugent b 1916 Scotland. It was after the GRO had done an official search for me, and I had spoken on the phone too, that I had the original very negative reply to the birth of DRN. If you can obtain any more info I can send for a cert if it looks likely. Bertha: After the business of trying to work out whether his mum was married or single, the W. Sussex historian suggested that a particular marriage in Radford (1907 I think) might have been the one – he put Mr Nugent and Bertha into FreeBMD and came up with just the one. As this was Notts and is where he went to school, this seemed possible. I sent off for the cert and the reply came back, “These two people are on the same page but each married to someone else!” Sandhurst has “father coffee planter”. His best friend, died last Nov of advanced Alzheimer’s aged 91, thought his father might have been in the Navy, but had only met his mother a few times and described her as being elderly and strange. (In mid 1930s she would have been around 60 with his being about 20/22.) I cannot work out whether father was a fiction for an unmarried mother, or whether he had died very soon after a marriage/conception! If she is not shown as being on the 1911 census then maybe she was then single and married later. I have even looked at families travelling abroad and looked at single women travelling with other families, (nursemaid/governess) Nugent on both male and female sides. Death Memorials: I have looked at those, but they are too unspecific for me to get to grips with, and if they are the ones I remember, the rank does not indicate any possibility of money – and some must have come from SOMEWHERE to pay for his schooling. She had none from the mid 30s on – son was supporting her, all the time. I am not allowed to have his Army Records as I am not next of kin. (He was my mother’s long time boyfriend and unofficial fiancé, executed by the Japanese in 1942 for attempting to escape. I have lots of his letters.) He was NOT Indian despite what it says in the war graves listing. As he was then in an Indian Reg he was automatically listed as Indian. I would have to wait for another 9 or 24 years depending on whether they become accessible after 75or 100 years! I will be that age myself then! Seine Maritime Do you live there or are you just visiting? We have lived here for just 5 years and we had an interview last week to lodge our requests for French nationality. If it comes through it will take up to two years! Thank you again very much for your help so far Jean Jean Wood in Charente-Maritime
