Interesting remarks - but do not be surprised about ANY first names. ALL the females in my first husbands family had the name Douglas including my 38 year old daughter who is now trying to lose it! (She has already done a deed pole to change to her step father's name and now she is marriaed to a Spanish vet, it is hyphenated ---Wood. Do not forget, that like Douglas, Herbert was a well known surname, and that may well have been the origin of her having it as a given name. That might give you a clue as to further ancestors. (Douglas used to be a female name in the 16C as Evelyn was a male name, now generally female. ) Many names have changed in use. My husband's first brother-in law - Hilary was horribly teased, as was a school fried, a male Valentine... In England, there have not been many limitations on given names, unlike strongly Catholic countries. Food for thought?
