Usually people are named after the places they lived - place names are much older than family names - but there are always exceptions - where a family of importance owned some land and then the newer place acquired that name. Farms might be named after the early owner of a farm - then it became a town. I'm on my way out but will look up Attenborough when I come back - borough = town. I will check Atten!
