They are talking about historical information, that is pre 1909 certificates, and nothing later, so no issue as far as privacy goes. My husband's ancestor wasn't registered in his county of birth, though his sister and brother were. There are at least 6 with the same name around the country within 2 years either side, so an addition to the index (mother's maiden name for example) could help me find him without sending 6 applications to 6 different register offices....and still maybe not finding him, perhaps he wasn't even registered at all. I don't want something for nothing, I still want to buy the cetificate, but a bit of help along the way could save a lot of expense, whoever you pay your taxes to (I do live in the UK....)
