    3. Symbols. When I enter dates on my trees from GRO I use ¼ and ¾ to denote first and third Quarters of a year. How can I show second and fourth Quarters, other than 2/4 and 4/4 ? Hope this is not too far of topic. Bob.

    3. Given the way the quarters are marked on the index books as Mar, Jun, Sep, Dec, I use qtr Jun 1901 qtr Dec 1860 for example. That way I can easily recognise the source of that information. Later GRO data has months rather than quarters, without qtr (or something) one could confuse them. The fractions were very good when most systems contained a fraction font, to my annoyance most don't nowadays, and the other convention 1/4 2/4 3/4 4/4 can look extremely peculiar, especially if there is no space between the 4 and the following word.
