Hello, Margot The nickname or "pet name" for Sarah was usually Sally, while that for Susan was Susie or Sukey (eg: "Polly put the kettle on / Sukey took it off again"). Sarah and Susan are two distinct names which would not be interchangeable. The only scenario I can think of is if your person was given both names and was commonly known by the second of them.
