The 1881 census has John GODFREY Age 28 with wife Ann age 31 living in Kirby in Ashfield. There is a wedding in December 1875 where John appears to have married Ann Wright but also in the same month Abraham GODFREY marries an Ann Allen. Have I got this right? The 1881 Census says Ann was born in Newthorpe Notts, and aged 31 it would mean she could have been born about 1850 but I can find no trace of her birth Can anyone help please? It would be much appreciated Thanks Margaret
1. Even at this stage, some people did not always know when they were born and dtes varied between censuses 2. Some parents did not record their births, others did not fill in census forms 'prying government' (My g grandfather, born 15 sept 1859 was never registered, discovered at his death in 1932, when they tried to find proof of his birth. Husband's great grandfather's brother refused to complete a census form 1881 - same reason) 3. Some people think they were born where they grew up - not necessarily the same, also names of small places, little villages, might be variously used as names at different censuses. Can't help about the marriages! Hi, Actually both marriages were on 5th Ocober 1875 at Blidworth. There are numerous male GODFREY marriages at Blidworth during the 19th century ( I have found 32 on a quick scan of the Notts FHS marriage CD). Also I work with a lad with the surname GODFREY who comes from Blidworth. It's a very common name in Blidworth/Rainworth area. regards Pete in Mansfield ----- Original Message ----- From: "Graham Taylor" <gtmt11@ntlworld.com> To: <NOTTSGEN@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 20, 2009 7:07 PM Subject: [NTT] John Godfrey > The 1881 census has John GODFREY Age 28 with wife Ann age 31 living in > Kirby > in Ashfield. > > > > There is a wedding in December 1875 where John appears to have married Ann > Wright but also in the same month Abraham GODFREY marries an Ann Allen. > Have > I got this right? > > > > The 1881 Census says Ann was born in Newthorpe Notts, and aged 31 it would > mean she could have been born about 1850 but I can find no trace of her > birth > > > > Can anyone help please?
