What does OUT OF PLACE mean on a Census record. One of my ancestors was a Boot and Shoe Manufacturer in the early 1800s but he was declared bankrupt in 1863 and on the 1871 Census his occupation was recorded as Shop man Out of Place. I would be surprised if someone hadn't asked this question before but I can't find a definitive answer although I might guess what it means - perhaps Out of work? Martyn Queensland, Australia
As you guessed, it means 'Unemployed' Often used to describe domestic servants who did not have a job and therefore not living in an employer's household.
