It is true that modern usage is FRANCES for a female and FRANCIS for a male, but I have several such in my family. Remember that spelling only began to settle in the 18C and 19C but many people were not so well educated, or in some cases followed personal, family usage, where it could be variable. You ALWAYS have to verify the gender of a child by census records, baptism (if stated) or other sources, whatever the name. There are MANY names with dual use.
