Enter these names into FreeBMD and you will find lots of examples - the former spelling being by far the most common. Surname dictionaries say it's a Scottish surname from the former barony of Dalrymple, a place in Ayrshire. Enter it into the IGI at FamilySearch, ticking the exact spelling box, and you will see that this confirms it overwhelmingly as a Scottish name. According to the Oxford Dictionary of Surnames by Hanks and Hodges, the Dalrymple family held the Earldom of Stair in Kyle, Aryshire, and can be traced to one William de Dalrymple in 1429. -- Roy Stockdill Genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."
