Dear Bill, I am not very good at the English research, but do have Frances/Francis in my names. I have found when it is spelled Frances with an "es" it's a girl. Francis with an "is" is a boy. You have spelled it both ways, so do you know if it is a male or female for sure? Bill, 1881 census has Elizabeth Carter 7, Susanna Carter 6 and Francis Carter 4 living in Stubton, LINCS with John & Mary Willows. Unfortunately the three girls are shown as visitors, so no relationship is obvious. But the first guess would have to be sisters Perhaps also significant is that all have different birthplaces. Elizabeth - Brant Broughton, LINCS Susanna - none shown Frances - Brough, NOTTS So I think that unless you can find them in later census records with parents or next of kin, you're going to be stuck with purchasing some certificates. Try 1891 census. They should all still be single. If living together, relationships may be shown. You could also look for Carter marriages and deaths 1870-1880. I'd also try to find the marriage of John Willows to see if Mary was a Carter. Peter
