If you want to trace the family back before 1905, then the obvious thing to do is look at the 1911 and 1901 censuses and then the earlier Victorian ones back to 1841. To be able to do this, you need a subscription to either - or both - of the two major websites that carry them, Ancestry and Findmypast. Personally, I am very much a Findmypast man but Nivard thinks otherwise! Whatever you decide, you cannot hope to trace the family back without having a subscription to one or other of these sites. You should also, however, try and trace them at FreeBMD, which has many millions of birth, marriage and death records from the General Register Office for England & Wales online. This can be found at: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl and does not require a subscription. The GRO records go back to July 1st 1837 and then you are back to the parish registers. If you wish to trace forwards to living descendants, then this is more difficult. I personally do very often know how to do it but I am unable to post details publicly because Rootsweb has a policy of not allowing the mention of living people on their mailing lists. Personally, I happen to think this is nonsense - because family history is surely just as much about living people as the dead - but others may not agree with me. If you want to go down this route, then I suggest you reply to me privately. However, we do need to know more details about what it is that you want, exactly, to do. -- Roy Stockdill Genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."
