I am hoping that SKS can assist me in finding the exact location of Thurman's Yard, Nottingham. I am fairly certain that it no longer exists. I believe that I have narrowed the search to the Finkhill and Orchard Streets area, in present day Maid Marion Way vicinity. One sees references to Thurman's Yard in mid-19th century (and later) censuses and trade directories. Does anyone know if the entrance to this yard was off Finkhill, or more probably, Orchard Street? What is the likelihood of consulting a map, viewable online, that would show this place. I recently downloaded the 1901 Ordinance Survey map for south Nottingham and it does not indicate Thurman's Yard. Many thanks in advance, Vaughn Thurman in sunny (today) Ontario
Hi Vaughn, According to Bedells' 1911 Street Directory, there was a Thurman Yard on Thurman Street, Radford. The Yard was positioned at 16 Thurman Street. Thurman Street is still there running between Alfreton Road and Birkin Avenue in NG7. Whether this Thurman Yard is the same as your Thurman's Yard I can't say, there may have been another one which was demolished before the publication of this directory. Vaughn, The way I used to approach this problem, especially in 1881 census was to use the "Next Household" button on the old Family Search site and keep going until I came to the next cross street. Not sure about FindMyPast, but you can do a similar thing on Ancestry using forward and back arrows. Of course, you have to have somebody in Thurmans Yard to start with. Another option is to try Old Maps http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html Peter
