Hello Valerie, I have a Ward family based in Greasley. They are headed by George and Mary Ann (Foster) WARD and lived in Brinsley. Two of their sons married into my GILBOURNE tree. George however was born in Oadby, Leics, so I don't think will link to your family. the family is on my web site at http://home.clara.net/daibevan/wc02/wc02_048.htm . I would like to make contact with anyone with a Ward family tree, either side of the Notts/Derbys border, especially those from Greasley, Pleasley, Sutton in Ashfield, Mansfield. I think I am back to Thomas Ward bpt 1709 Sutton in Ashfield mar (1) Sarah Humphrey 1735 Mansfield and (2) Hannah Greaves 1745 Pleasley. Any help re Thomas or other Ward info to help join some Ward family trees together and take them further back would be much appreciated. Valerie
Farewell vain world advice to thee I give Act uprightly while on the earth you live Don't dye your conscience with a scarlet red Nor take away the harmless orphan's bread A greedy man that could not be denied Took my possessions to uphold his pride My birthright's gone: My life is at an end Adieu fair world since God has proved my friend This epitaph now illegible is from the tombstone of a young girl Mary SHAW an orphanburied at Gamston and who it is said was defrauded of some property by her relatives or by some man. I could on make out a few words in 1881 but Nancy THEAKER the old clerk's wife recited this epitaph to me and toldme a long tale about the child which I could not quite understand This Stone is to the memory of Mary daughter of Richard and Olive SHAW who died in her 15th year 1769 "Mary SHAW was buried 3 Dec 1769" - Extract from Register - Gamston St Peter p.53 by Miss ASHTON of Gamston I hope that this is of interest to someone John Mellors
Note in the Gamston Parish Register: The Revd Mr BROOKE A.M. Rector of Gamston was appointed headmaster of the Grammar Free School at Leeds Yorks in Aug 1764 I hope that this is of interest to someone John Mellors
HI list A few years ago now I photographed Retfords war memorial in the Square and tried looking up on the CWGC site for details of the individuals named. I was surprised to find some of the men's family's were listed in far flung places and not all local. Your mailing on this subject also reminded me that in West Retford Church there are some brass plaques in the chancel that commemorate the sons of the then vicar Rev Homfray who were living outside of the local area , so could this James Still have had a family member who was priest at that church at the time? Bingo ! Mystery almost solved .....(but not checked the details !) . Thanks to Frances' suggestion I did a further search of George Wilkins . and found this "(George Wilkins ) ....died at the residence, Southwell, on 13 August 1865, .......Of his sons, Henry St Clair Wilkins was a general, John Murray Wilkins (d. 1881) was the last rector of Southwell collegiate church before it became a cathedral, and GEORGE DASHWOOD WILKINS (d. 1885) was in the service of the East India Company." Lieutenant James Still had a sister Marian who married an Alexander Dashwood , so there is obviously some Wilkins / Dashwood connection that encouraged George Wilkins to erect the plaque at St. MARYS . Phew !!! ________________________________ From: Frances Costello <francescostello@hotmail.co.uk> To: Rob loasby <loasby@gmail.com>; "nottsgen-l@rootsweb.com" <nottsgen-l@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 24, 2013 9:39 AM Subject: Re: [NTT] Lieutenant James STILL mystery HI list A few years ago now I photographed Retfords war memorial in the Square and tried looking up on the CWGC site for details of the individuals named. Thats a good logical suggestion Frances , thanks . The incumbant (priest) at that time was a George Wilkins D.D., who seems to have covered the period 1817-1843 . Can't see any immediate family connection as he was born in Norfolk but its worth checking out . ------------------------------ On Tue, Sep 24, 2013 9:39 AM BST Frances Costello wrote: >HI list >A few years ago now I photographed Retfords war memorial in the Square and tried looking up on the CWGC site for details of the individuals named. Thanks to Rob and Bob for those suggestions and taking the trouble to search the records . To save anyone else searching , Chris sent me (off list) the birth for Mary Strong . She too doesn't have obvious Notts connections being born in Kensington , London in 1766 ,daughter of William Strong and Mary and she was buried in London too . Must admit I hadn't absorbed all of the inscriptions wording , especially the "How beloved a Son! How endeared a Brother!" so maybe he had a sibling that moved to Notts . I only know of his sister Marian (Dashwood) and on the 1841Census is a Selina Still (still living at Devonshire Place), maybe an older sister to Lieutenant James Still , so will do a bit more news archive searching . There is also the burial of Ann STILL in 1825 age 22 - the only Still or Stills in the database for that parish. Not sure if there is any connection but this is a record from the Baptism section of the Notts FHS database - one of only 8 with that surname between the late 1600's and the mid 1800's Baptism 1831 04 04 child Mary Ann Brooking Father John STRONG Mother Mary Ann Brooking Profession 15 Kings Hussars Abode Barracks Parish NOTTINGHAM St Mary There are also 18 marriages for that parish where Strong is the surname of either the bride or the groom - ranging from the latter part of the 1600's for a 200 year period but only 4 burials - all in the 1800's and 2 of them babies of a few weeks. Not a well balanced selection! This may not add anything to the quest but if anyone would like more details please let me know. James Still was baptised on 2 Oct 1800 at West Tytherley, Hampshire, son of Peter and Mary Still of Queens St, Bloomsbury, London. Salisbury and Winchester Journal, 18 Mar 1822 On the 12th of October last died, off Sierra Leone, Lieutenant James Still, of his Majesty's ship Pheasant, son of Peter Still Esq of Devonshire place. Peter Still, born in 1760 at East Knoyle, Wiltshire, was an attorney at Lincoln's Inn. He married Mary Strong, daughter of his partner William Strong, on 8 Jun 1795 at Holborn St George the Martyr, London. He died on 28 Feb 1832 in Bath, Somerset. Peter was buried on 6 Mar 1832 at East Knoyle, Wiltshire. Mary Still, relict of Peter, died on 20 Sep 1841 in London. I didn't find any connection to Nottingham for this family. Peter Still who married Letitia Lawrence belongs to a different family.
